Humor language is rarely discussed; we will explore later on the reasons why humor is avoided in schools, the types of humor and its benefits. At times we overlook humor as an important element in teaching and using it as a tool to contribute to a positive environment for learning, humor for some is considered to be synonyms of disorder and chaos. ”I’m not going to start telling jokes, it will lead to a complete loss of control” said my friend’s teacher in Lycée school. For others, lack of knowledge as to how one may use humor in his speech effectively might prevent him from using his sense of humor. “I enjoy humor, but I don’t know how to go about using it, so I don’t, I don’t want …show more content…
The writer of the article Benefits of Humor (n.d), states that studies by Fabio Sala at the Hay Group have shown that humor, when used skillfully, reduces hostility, improves morale, and helps to communicate difficult messages. Other research done by three experts showed that humor makes the target person want to listen more, makes the information more memorable, distracts the person from thinking about counter-arguments and it builds rapport and liking of the humorist. Most importantly, humor makes people healthier, on both physical and psychological level. Health wise, it lowers the blood pressure, improves breathing and strengthens the immune system and exercises the muscles. On the psychological base, humor distracts one from negative emotions, increases and boosts the energy, and it just makes us feel better and more connected to others. As cited in this article, “humor also breaks through barriers-laughter, can transcend age, race, gender and belief. Writers are constantly looking for new ways to convey their messages. Even if a piece isn’t serious, creative delivery is vital to captivating a modern audience. Humor isn’t just about becoming the next Tina Fey or Stephen Colbert. Adding comedic elements to writing can set an argument apart--in both negative and positive ways. Laughter may not be the best medicine, but it definitely can help convey an argument. While the goal may be to improve an argument or message, it can sometimes be a disadvantage as well, especially when discussing education.
World famous Austrian neurologist Sigmund Freud and founder of psycho-analysis published a book entitled ‘Jokes and Their Relation to the Unconscious’ which deals with the perennial themes of comedy and laughter. He analyses three laughter situations: der Witz (translated as

Maintaining a sense of humour – the job that we do within school is obviously very important, however sometimes it helps to see the funny side of some situations as laughter can be a good way to break the ice and is also a great way of relaxing and relieving stress.
People always say that laughter alleviates tension. If this is the case, then it makes sense that the use of humor when discussing uncomfortable topics can make the conversation easier and more light-hearted. One of Mark Twain’s most frequently used devices in works such as “Advice to Youth”, “To the Person Sitting in Darkness”, and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is satire, which can provide society a method to bond over uncomfortable topics, and facilitate the ability to sustain that bond through an easier way to create discussion.
Humor’s foundations are made up of seeds of truth, from which comedy and laughter can grow from. Within these seeds different types of issues are found that cast a wide array of topics in which are discussed or given question to by humorists. As the evolution of humor continues to grow it can be seen that it will continue down a darker road, as history has
Humor is viewed by some people as an important part of life. Most people enjoy amusement, and some turn to humorists as a source for that amusement. Some further view humorists as holding an important position in society because society allows humorists to say things that others can and will not say. Due to their unique position in society, humorists serve a role that is certainly unique and can be important, but not vital. Furthermore, humor can very well have a dangerous side, whether intentional or unintentional, so humorists should try to be careful with their powerful position.
In a study conducted by Kuiper & Harris (2009), the extent to which humor styles can predict different components of physical health was examined. A sample of 105 undergraduate students within the age range of 17-34 years was selected for the study. The different components of physical health included physical symptoms, attitudes about physical health issues, and coping strategies for dealing with a variety of common physical health ailments and complaints. Adaptive and maladaptive humor styles were expected to show differential relationships with the components of physical health. The present study uses humor as an emotion-regulation and tries to determine whether different types of humor have different effects on negative emotion. Another major issue with this research is that author fails to acknowledge the other aspects of emotion as a variable. The author is only interested in different types of humor and it effects on those emotions, which are perceived negative. However emotion as a variable is not only limited to negative aspects but it may also include other aspects (e.g.,
Humor affects how people relate to one another. As “much humor draws on the sophisticated use of grammar and lexicon, as well as culture-specific references, genres, and discourse patterns,” (Shively 1), it is considered the height of knowledge of the language to understand its humor. Humor is a type of ludic language play, or using words for one’s own enjoyment or amusement.
Jokes are often misinterpreted and can offend people. The saying “Beauty is in the eye of beholder” is similar with humor. A joke isn’t funny unless the audience finds it funny. There are places where comedy is normal and it is okay to joke around. However, there are places, such as in a classroom, where jokes are not appreciated, and can often lead to trouble. This is why one should learn when and where to tell jokes, not to always seek attention, and what jokes are appropriate for your
During this study researchers Rod A. Martin and Herbert M Lefcourt accomplished three similar but separate studies. The first study was on how much humor reduces stress in life situations among college students. The second was on the application of a humorous situation and how much it would relate to their use of humor in “real life” situations. The third and final study was a follow up from study one and more accurately assessed the participants use of humor in stressful situations.
What is the first thing that come to your mind when you hear the word “jokes” or “comedy”? Most people simply think of them as a tension-reliever and a “lubricant” to our daily lives (O’Hara 104). However, journalist O’Hara, professor Greengross, and philosopher Critchley, see comedy and jokes in an alternative and bigger perspective, and come up with an arguable question − what social purpose do jokes and humor serve in our society? O’Hara

Humor, it is one of the greatest devices used in literature, writing, or even just everyday conversation with close friends and family.
