The non-profit organization we actively raised money for was Samaritan Health Services, a hospital system, which has a main campus in Corvallis and four surrounding hospitals in Albany, Lebanon, Newport and Lincoln City. The organization’s mission is to build healthier communities together. The hospital is able to accomplish this goal by maintaining and developing relationships, and investments from generous corporations, foundations and individuals in the community. The established donors’ commitment is aligned to support the values of the hospital in philanthropic efforts and activities. To make this happen, they made patient safety their systems core value throughout all of their hospitals. They accomplished this by hiring an outside company, who was known for their safety excellence, to train all of their staff members to become patient oriented. This process allowed them to develop a culture of safety in which they believed would lead them to become a high reliability organization. There are several things that people in America are unaware about, one of them being the difference between non-profit and profit hospitals. There is a lot of difference but at the same time, there are a lot of similarities between non-profit and for-profit hospitals like one being that they both are trying to find a way to budget and analyze to government spending and still be able to assist in patient care. One can receive adequate treatment at either institution; however, some would say they have specific differences in how care is administered. This work will make informative comparisons between the two institutions, argue the merits, and explain how they both operate to save lives.
The successfulness of a healthcare organization is determined by the many qualities and attributes its leader possesses when managing patient care. Such care, whether implemented at the micro, meso, or macro level, can prove to be beneficial or result in the failure of the organization structure when change is improperly addressed. Leaders, by using their knowledge and expertise, must foster care throughout all the various levels of management that is a reflection of bureaucratic thoughts and principles or one that is a reflection of the complex adaptive system. The complex adaptive system is a comprehensive system that is complex in nature and oftentimes can result in chaos and the failure of an organization when change is not properly managed. Throughout my profession, I have witnessed many styles of management and found this to be the most detrimental when change is being implemented. I feel that such style of control is what drives the good people away. A prime example of this style of management was seen with the launching of computerizing charting. Computers, as you may know, can be challenging for some, as well as overwhelming. This is especially true for the seasonal employees who are not so reluctant to any changes, and trying to grasp onto something new can result in a toxic environment where chaos and conflict are produced. The launching of Epic, which came about shortly afterward, fueled the fire even further and resulted in a very complex environment. Within the
