The American Revolution is what gained the United States it’s independence from Britain, and stopped America from having to obey all of Britain’s laws and taxes. The laws that Britain passed had just gotten worse over time, and the colonists decided that they should revolt against the British rule, so they did. The American colonists had just finished living in a war-zone, in which the French and Indian war had just taken place, and they, after the British won the war, were still suffering under the British’ control. The Colonists were angered by the fact that they had no representation in parliament, yet they were being taxed by the British. As Patrick Henry said at the House of Burgesses, “We can under law be taxed only by our representatives. We have no representatives in the British Parliament” (Doc 1). The colonists were trying their hardest to peacefully let the British know that they didn’t agree with what they were doing, yet nothing calm or subtle seemed to be doing the trick. The colonists had been so angered by all the taxes they’d had to pay, and such little independence they had, they decided they should dump the British’ tea into the harbor. As George Hughes said it, “We then were ordered by our commander to open the hatches and take out all the chests of tea and throw them overboard” (Doc 4). This was a huge turning point for the colonists, which imminently resulted in one of the greatest historic moments of the 1770’s.
