There are many ways Shakespeare’s life could’ve affected his writing. It could have been his childhood, marriage, the people he admired , and the people he was around him. The primary language to learn is Latin. Latin was the language to learn in that time. Shakespeare most likely had some lessons in English he mostly learned Latin. Shakespeare’s family controlled a huge amount of property. Both land and money. They have proof because the sixteenth century legal records show it. They also import property , served as executors of wills, and engaged in litigation. They designed this to defend and further their financial interest . Shakespeare wrote a lot of self-suffient and intelligent female characters. According to (bartleby.com)some critics and other readers of Shakespeare’s plays argue that he treat the women with zero respect. But, he really treats them with a huge amount of respect. They think this for a few reasons. The women in his plays usually die in a tragic death. The play Julius Caesar Portia ( Julius Caesar ) wide kills herself by swallowing hot coals. Portia was respected in
William Shakespeare is at the heart of British Literature. His name is associated with the most brilliant minds in history. He is in the very history of the evolution of culture. From entirely new styles that inspired many to directly changing history by interacting with the officials of the time. He sculpted the English language and dictionary new words and rhythms. Shakespeare is truly one of the greatest expressionist figures to have ever existed. His legacy will live on far past the last spoken
Shakespeare created his own archetypal structure when he wrote tragedies and comedies. In tragedies everyone dies. In comedies everyone gets married. Across each tragedy and comedy similarities with other tragedies and comedies can be found. That’s because, once again, it’s archetypal literature. The characters especially as far as women go consist of “the weak one”- (Ophelia, Juliet, (although not really because she loved her parents enemies), Hero and many others. Shakespeare created a new type of literature with women that were stronger and rebellious and perhaps had power like Rosalind and Beatrice in “As you like it,” and “Much Ado about
Although some great thinkers wavered from this inequality of women, such as Socrates as stated in Plato’s Republic, many great thinkers stayed true to the socially accepted idea that women were much the inferior of men. However, William Shakespeare as brilliant in his works by using women as supporting characters with very important roles. In this way, he showed women on the surface as being of little to no importance, yet when a reader delves deeper into the context, they will find the true importance of these female characters. As once stated by John Ruskin - “an English artist and a leading art critic of the Victorian era”(TheFamousPeople.com Editors) - “Shakespeare has no heroes’ only heroines.” Shakespeare’s treatment of women can be seen throughout a number of his plays, including Hamlet, MacBeth, Lear, and
Even with William’s fame, inadequate information was found about him and much of what is known is not entirely proved. It was assumed William Shakespeare was born in April 23, 1564 in a small town named Stratford-upon-Avon in England. He was the son of a tradesman who made and sold gloves, though was once known as the mayor of Stratford. His father’s name was John Shakespeare and his mother’s was Mary. William Shakespeare was the third oldest in his family. Out of seven siblings, only five survived to adulthood.
In reality, Shakespeare gave women important and positive characteristics such as intelligence, attractiveness and strength. Cleopatra was one of Shakespeare's most independent and
Shakespeare lived during Elizabethan era, and person’s reputation and status of that time played extremely important role in life of society. There were privileged and non-privileged people. Speaking about women, they had fewer rights than men; some men even treated them as their property. If we want to characterize Shakespeare’s attitude towards reputation it is very important to mention circumstances of the time he lived. Shakespeare also had strict position towards women’s discrimination. Very often he underlined it in his works showing women as clever and wise people, who just suffer because of unfair attitude towards them.
Others have asserted that the roles of women in his plays were prominent for the time and culture that he lived in,his intent in creating characters to inspire much controversy. Two works, Taming of the Shrew, and Twelfth Night, stand out particularly well in regards to Shakespeare's use of female characters. If you could examine these two plays, you would see that Shakespeare, though conforming to contemporary attitudes of women, circumvented them by creating resolute female characters with a strong sense of self.
The lack of information that is available about his life is quite minimal and has been the backbone of the attacks and arguments against Shakespeare's legitimacy (Hastings 480). "Shakespearean scholars have often had to deal with arguments that Shakespeare did not have the birth, breeding, or education necessary to write the plays" (Friedman XV). However, the information about his occupation and his life in business and real estate gives evidence to his life as an actor (Whalen 3). As a business man, it is argued that Shakespeare was invoked in "petty transactions" rather than being a playwright. The is an inadequate amount of facts in regards to claims of Shakespeare's petty
Maggie Coviello Jaime Jordan English 242 10/27/14 Shakespeare is known for a multitude of things; His ability to make a play both funny and dramatic, his compelling and complex story lines, his multi-dimensional characters and last but not least, his strong female leads. Some of his female characters are celebrated to this day for being original and fierce in their convictions. One thing that makes his female leads really stand out is the fact that they were created in a time when patriarchy and female submission were norms among society. They challenged gender norms, and though he was not the first to write such strong female characters, he was one of the most widely recognized playwrights of that time.
Some people believe that Shakespeare did not do his work alone. Theories are that he was connected to royalty and that royalty helped him. Many of his work takes place in Italy. He actually never went to Italy. He vividly explains the environment of Italy. How can Shakespeare do this if he never went to Italy? How can he be a genius if he did not receive education, and his father and mother did not know how to write or read? Many people think Shakespeare did not work hard for his
Basically, Shakespeare couldn’t have written the plays, sonnets, and poems that he claimed he did because he didn't have enough education and he didn't have any personal connections to the royal court. In the text,
Women are major characters in Shakespeare's plays. In "Othello" women are treated no different. They are defined rather uniquely. These definitions inhibit upon Shakespearean society. Women in that era were supposed to be obedient, silent and chaste. If a lady were not any of these aforementioned characteristics, then she would not be acceptable by the norms of the Elizabethan society.
Shakespeare (1564 (baptised)-1616) was an english playwright. His plays have been translated to many different languages and they have been repeatedly adapted. Not only do his plays continue to stay popular, they are constantly studied, performed and reinterpreted through different cultures around the worlds. His plays hold many stereotypes of men and women in their roles in society, but he also questions, challenges and changes those representations. He allows female characters to struggle within and against social expectations so they, like
William Shakespeare 's life was very interesting, to say the least about him. “An English playwright and poet, William Shakespeare is often considered the greatest dramatist the world has ever known and the most recognized poet in the English language” (Lindaman). From a very young age, William was a very bright kid, who had gained a love for theater. Ever since that love as a kid, it only grew stronger. Not only did he have a love for theater, but also poetry. Throughout Shakespeare’s life family has been a huge part in all of his successes, especially his father.
Although Shakespeare has been rated by some critics as a feminist, there are critics who argue that what Shakespeare wrote was to please men and what was said to be supportive of gender equality is not true. However, Shakespeare presents a single image of women in his literature, despite the variety of characters he presented. He views women as a constant source of evil and sin. This reflects the religious source of Adam's first sin based on female.
