The performance Shaping Sound is composed of two acts. The first act consists of seven pieces whereas the second act includes six pieces thus there is thirteen pieces in total. The seven pieces incorporated in the first act include Broken in Chaos, Solitude, Between Sleep, A Sudden Drift, My Dear Love, Exposure, and Rouge Lounge. On the other hand, the second act includes Escape from Reality, Found, Corruption, Darkness, The Light, and Waking Life. These dance pieces were created and choreographed by Travis Wall, Nick Lazzarini, Teddy Forance, and Kyle Robinson. However, the pieces do not include any live music for they used digital music from a CD or sound file. The lighting designers Seth Jackson and Nathan Scheuer did a remarkable job producing an atmosphere that went along with each dance piece. Likewise, the costume designer Effie Matthews undertook the task of creating the look for the company.
2. The performance begins with the whole cast on stage. This first piece is called Broken Pieces and it is an introduction into the performance that will be taking place. This is a jazz piece because

The guy from the previous scene proceeds to bring out the girl in white, but she appears to be dead this time. I get the impression that she is dead since her body is hanging loosely and the guy is carrying her to the metal frame bed. Shortly after laying her down, the other dancers come out and they dance in a very sensual way. Ultimately, the final piece of the performance was Waking Life. For this piece, the whole cast came out to perform. This piece had a festive vibe to it and the performers looked like they were having fun. The girl from before that appeared dead was also brought out where she started dancing with a new guy she met. This finale appeared as if the performance was a dream and the girl from the beginning was just dreaming. The show ends with all of the performers coming out and bowing to the
The music changes now as the musicians start to play a march. The dancers then remove the flower from their hats pull their hats down low to resemble a soldiers headwear. In addition, they turn their canes upside down holding them as if they were guns and start marching off stage. Simultaneously, the lights turn dark blue on stage and the dancers faces turn serious. Their once extravagant and lighthearted movement is now stiff and somewhat serious. The audience however, laughs at this shift in theme. All the dancers march off stage except the center girl, she continues to march in a circle making faces and poking fun at the others. Finally, she leaves the stage laughing loudly and dramatically at herself. She comes on one more time only to
In the third section Ms. Donna Wood looks like an African goddess and her body has an unexpected gracefulness. Even stage color was bright reddish, warm atmosphere around the dancer, like a sunrise in the morning. Stage would fill with colors. Music and performer are singing together. A sound of music tempo gets faster. She has the happiest face ever, no pain and no slavery. She jumps, she swings her leg and arms, and even she pulls her dress up and shows her leg an entire dance. Sound and lightening create the environment and good mood. She uses high level of dance than in previous two sections. She moves in between melody. I liked how she uses
Some of the movements executed by the dancers are similar to those executed by dancers in a stepping performance and also in a tap dance presentation. This presentation falls into the group of the new trends of modern dance, in which the choreographer are taking more and more liberty with various dance combinations, and including strong messages in their work. I would definitely attend other dance performance, not only from this company, but also by other companies; and would also recommend this performance, especially to people going through a dark period in their life. This performance finished convincing me that dance is surely the most communicative of the art forms, and that a single presentation can convey more than one
When the show actually began, it started with a digital green timer on the wall counting by the second, accompanied by Mr. Jones sitting at a desk with a desk lamp. He began to read a story as a single dancer in a pink long sleeved top danced beside him. This dancer was definitely the most memorable mover of the company due to her exquisite fluidity within her movement, as well as the desirable synchronization between her movements and the words of Mr. Jones’s voice throughout the piece. As the performance carried on, the other dancers performed various solos, duets, and quartets, of modern movement while Mr. Jones’s stories carried on.
The Repertory Dance Company Fall Dance Concert was held at the Mannoni Performing Arts Center. The dancers involved in this dance concert are part of the University of Southern Mississippi Dance Department meaning they are either pursuing a degree in dance or teach dance at a university level. Both students and faculty had the opportunity to present work during adjudication to be chosen to be presented at this concert. I particularly enjoyed this concert because, while all of the dances presented were a part of the broad genre of modern dance, each dance had such a unique aesthetic so the concert still provided a great amount of variety to keep the audience captivated. The two pieces I have chosen to review represent this variety very
My name is Hamzah Sait, the date of the performance was the 23rd of April, and it was located at the Stevie Eller Dance Theatre. The concert was titled Jump Start which means it is the end of the old era and time for the young choreographers and dancers at the university of Arizona to shine and go around the world. The dances were basically performed by UA students that have been practicing throughout the semester, and they call it, spring collection. The names of the performances that I am going to talk about are as the following: The process, from our insides out, and Breakfast Burritos. And the choreographers for the pieces that I am going to discuss are: Tanner Boyer, Kira
As a piece of choreography, “La Petite Mort” expresses the motifs of sexuality and death through the contrasts between levels of energy, confidence, and elevation. Translating directly from French to “little death”, the phrase “petite mort” also serves as a French idiom representing sexual climax. The comparison of the supposed pleasure of a sexual act, and act associated with creation, with death evokes strong emotions for both dancers and audience members alike. The piece runs for approximately seventeen minutes and consists of twelve dancers, six males and six females, and a wide array of symbolic props, including swords (foils), dresses that stand without support, and more. The tension and lack thereof between dancers and between a dancer and his or her prop can be felt palpably by the audience. Between sections of the piece, the male dancers carry an enormous cloth which glides through the air gracefully like a scarf, and the lights dim, creating a sense of mystery which is consistent with the feelings of the audience in trying to figure out how to deal with these two conflicting ideas.
At 3:00 PM on Sunday April 13th, 2014, I attended the performance “Shared Graduate Dance Concert at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center-Dance Theatre. Walking into the theatre I had anticipated experiencing an upright performance. This sensation came as I visited the website for the Shared Graduate Concert and saw a breath taking photo that entailed a person behind a curtain holding their hand up and a fuzzy person in front of a curtain. Also, I knew I was in for a good ride after I saw Meghan Bowden in the pamphlet.
The first piece was called Ballad unto. The concert had 3 acts and this piece was the first act. I really love how they started off the concert very classical. Dwight used Bach music which already put me in the mind set of classical ballet. Even though the music had my mind, the movement otherwise was something different. The women were on point but keep to that contemporary taste that Dwight Rhoden likes.
The piece was about the Holocaust. There was live music. There were two musicians: one woman played the piano, and one man played the accordion, drums, and sang. The dancers talked on stage, and narrated the dance. During most of the dance two dancers had microphones and were being narrators. The narrators changed throughout the dance. The costuming changed throughout the piece. In the beginning they were just in
The female dancer re-enters the stage sans the blue shirt/shorts and repeats the gestures with a bit more feeling, and the male does the same thing after the female exits. The next time the female enters the stage, she is only in the colorful bra and black briefs. The male enters the stage in a black bra and colorful underwear. The color in the costumes sends a message of the differences between males and females, but the black undergarments lean towards blurring the lines of gender. The lights get brighter as clothing is shed. The two performers fully embody the gestures now, and seem to have more of an intimate connection with one another. The music constantly seems to be an underscore of the dance, but does not add much to it. The dancers share weigh and partner with more sensuality, and eventually are silhouetted with blue light as they return to gesture and awkward ballroom partnering. The lights fade as they continue to move.
The performance took place on October 8th at 8pm at the newley renovated Northrop auditorium. The new acoustics of the venue added greatly to the overall performance. It really brought the auditorium to life and helped to take the viewer to a whole other place. I only regret that I wasn’t able to focus completely on the ensemble’s music due to being distracted by the exciting show the dancers were putting on.
During the dance show at the Phoenix Art Museum I saw elements of dance from the stage. There are five elements which are Body, Action, Space, Time, and Energy. The first part was from the dance show it was about music because it looked like a calm place that people might be relaxing near the beach or walking through the beach as a couple. The costumes it looked like they were wearing rainbow colors as I think it comes from the talent show. The dancers were trying to represent their hard work from practicing for the big show for the audience and the artistes people that came to see the dancers at the dance concerts. The lights from the dance show I think they picked a light color for the audience could see the people dance on the stage and from the lights it also shows a clear vision for the audience to see if they did a good job or not.
Through the use of their bodies, the performers told the stories of not only, Nora, Miss Julie, and Hedda Gabler, but of every relationship, even though the storyline gets lost somewhere in the middle, during a performance using the trapeze bar, they soon get back on point finishing with and scaringly beautiful piece where the three leading ladies are left in a spotlight performing on a set of uneven poles as snow falls on top of them. The vision is haunting as the bruises on the legs of the performers are clear to be seen by everyone and the slowness of the act is breathtaking leaving the audience in silence. Every movement was finished graceful and strong both at the same time, before easily flowing into the next creating a form of wild, erratic and magical dancing. The ultimate message from this performance is that love is a battlefield, and no matter how hard we fight sometime we have to let
This fall dance concert was filled with joy, darkness, torture, culture, and women's rights, right when you sit down and observe through all 8 dance performances. It would have been 9 dance routines but the dancer who was suppose to perform Hart Broken had an injury, which made a putt off. Nevertheless the show must go on, it starts off with the first and second performance, Xtra Xtra and Scar Tissue. Revealing that both performances were different themes because Xtra Xtra had the dancers in radiant colors and seemed to be energetic, whereas the performers in Scar Tissue were clothed in black attire, such as tutus, dresses, and tights, yet still energetic. This brought to my attention that the whole dance performances were contrast to each other. Throughout the routines of the dance concert, the
