Ways in which humans had affected the environment in my area was by dumping drums containing paints and burying paint thinners and many other solvents into the landfill which worsened the grounds and soils of the area. The conditions though in this environment are under control and do not show any high signs of exposures to humans or creatures, meaning they have a low risk of being affected. The only actual organisms that were harmed but only in small portions included shrubs and trees in the wetlands. The site came to be polluted because of the groundwaters underneath the site, which had been contaminated by pollutants leaching from the landfills. Some ways in which we have been attempting to correct this problem was by selecting modified
What are the characteristics that define the nature of the relationship between humans and the natural environment? Explain.
So often humans extract for resources like Lead, Aluminum, coal, marcellus shale, natural gas, or asbestos, and over time leave behind a environmental contaminated location. When nearby people start getting sick, showing up with health issues linked to the contamination in their environment, then the EPA usally gets involved. In a different light, the ecological effects from these sites can be things like habitat fragmentation, or in particularly vulnerable species, extinction. For example, in Wyoming, when the coal extraction began, a nearby lake is inevitably going to be contaminated with acid mine drainage. Say a specialists amphibian lived symbiotically with a moss or algae in the lake ecosystem, and without intervention the species dramatically suffer. Superfund sites are a popular topic sustainability and conservation biologists should use their popularity in the nation to aide in the local community remediation methods. For example, I am working to sample vegetation, water quality, fish biomass, and macro invertebrates biomass in local acid mine drainage remediation sites here in Indiana. This is a direct impact from human
The energy from the sun heats the Earth through the greenhouse effect. The greenhouse effect is when the atmospheric gases absorb infrared radiation and release it back to Earth’s surface, it acts almost like
Most of the blame for climate change over the years especially after the 1850’s has been placed on humans. As long as modern humans have roamed the earth, they have been upsetting the natural balance of the earth. People have did this by clearing areas of land, killing animals, polluting water, etc. Before the “modern human”, people like the Native Americans cared for the earth. They respected the land and the people that cared for it. Unfortunately, people don’t care anymore. Until recently, people did not care for the earth. People did not realize the harm they were causing it. Now we know how detrimental things are that we continue to do and used to do.
History is a dynamic topic due to the innumerable factors that define its outcome. To understand how history is shaped, it is important to look at both the advantageous and disadvantageous aspects of the theme relating to the interaction between humans and the environment relating to demography and disease, and technology. The theme relating to the formation of political entities is important in history because a political entity shows ideological and technological innovation. Political entities form various political structures and forms of governance that led to conflicts that illustrated the human capacity for violence. Jared Diamond’s Guns, Germs, and Steel details the human interaction with the environment through the extensive detail
Human civilization has not existed for a significant amount of time in comparison to the Earth itself. Yet, I have no fear in saying that no other creature has had such a momentous impact on the ecological systems here. This paper will cover a modern environmental issue linked to the idea of development. Furthering the subject, next will be an identification of flows on the subject. Lastly this paper will do a cross comparison of the flows and their structures, and bring back to the front what this means about sustainable development.
Human activities which include emission from motor vehicles, pollution, cutting down of trees have been attributed to be the major causes of warming to the earth leading to changes in climatic conditions. The warming in the earth has a lot of detrimental effects on the ecosystem leading to damages as well as loss of population diversity. The warming also causes the shifting in biomes as well as modifications in the phenological activities for different species. Due to the changes in climatic conditions, there is intense competition amongst many plant and animal species to enhance their survival which has led to species invading areas which was previously occupied by another species. On the other hand, changes in vegetation cover, has necessitated the relocation of human beings and other animals who depended on them and therefore they must change and adapt effectively to the new environments. The disruptions in the ecosystems especially where there are endangered species and interdependent species have adverse effects on the diversity and at times leads to extinction as well as affecting the biogeochemical cycles. The climatic changes have effects on ecosystem structures and functions as well affecting the benefits human beings derive from the ecosystems such as food, water and wood products
The POET model talks about how the many different primary drivers there are present in society today that aide the increase of the human impact upon the environment. The primary drivers discussed in this model are population growth, organization of governments, the environment, and the technology of today. Each of these has some varying effect upon the environment. These primary drivers each have arguments and examples from throughout history that can show how great of an influence they may have on human impact upon the environment. One aspect that is sometimes forgotten about it the concept of how values effect the drivers within the POET model. Values can certainly effect the increase or decrease in population and can even effect technology that is produced around the globe. Author Lynn White begins to go in depth about the topic of how religious values have shaped the science and technology that we know today in his article titled “The Historical Roots of Our Ecological Crises”. White delves into the history of Judeo-Christianity and the influence this religion has had upon the world of science and technology.
The Ecosystem plays a huge role in animal, humans, and the environments life. An ecosystem includes living things such as plants, animals, and organisms in an area, interacting with each other and their non-living environments such as the weather, sun, soil, and climate. Ecosystems are the foundation of the Biosphere and it determines the health of the entire earth system. Since the Ecosystem plays such a big role on the Earth humans have found a way to help the ecosystem. Humans have also found ways to make the ecosystem worse. Things that people believe are minute are actually huge factors that either contribute to making the human impact on the ecosystem positive or negative. Little things like driving a car to work can weaken the ecosystem by the gas they are burning to fuel that vehicle is going into the air and causing pollution. Even big things like disposing of trash properly can really make a difference in the world. People fail to realize that everything they do finds a way to effect the people around them. Ultimately, humans really do play a big impact on the ecosystem both positively and negatively.
How often do you think about how your actions affect the environment around you? Human Environment Interaction is the impact the ecosystem has on human, how keeping the environment safe is good for our essential well-being, and how our values and and knowledge of the environment affects us. Equally important, is how any type weather affects us on what we wear, what crops we grow and how they grow, and what types of activities we partake in that day. In addition, how different environments of places cause what people do in those places, how people act or are, how the weather is compared to other places in the world. Although people may believe that cutting down trees may not be harmful to them and nature, the correlation between human lifestyle and nature is important to both sides since it creates oxygen that we breath, and we use important goods from the environment to create homes and communities, it is also important since the weather helps us grow crops and plants.
Humans effect the environment in many ways, some negative and some positive. While learning about all of the problems people cause, in my opinion that population is the worst thing that humans are doing to our world, but that population cannot be looked at alone. It really goes hand in hand with overconsumption. With the population of earth as of 2014 being 7.1 billion and the United Nations projecting that by 2050 it will hit 8.1 billion we have to figure out a way to reduce what we are consuming. (Population Division Technical Paper No. 2011/3, n.d.)
Interactions between human and the ecosystem have been operating for millenniums, and are impossible to eliminate, as each depends on the other in order to survive and flourish. However, as modern technology advances, as well as the increase in the world’s population, the need for natural resources begin to rise to an alarming rate which has started to gradually destroy the ecosystem. Recently, there has been an increase of sea levels in region whilst other rain-bounty areas have begun to experience their first droughts. This phenomenon is known as climate change. Climatologists have concluded that human activity has played a major role in contributing to the changes, therefore requiring extreme measures before this phenomenon evolves into
In an increasingly urbanized environment, many actions that benefit humans can consequently have a negative impact on the surrounding environment due to how interconnected Earth’s systems are: for example, chemical cleaning products that are often used in households and businesses, such as Clorox and Fantastic, are a convenient and useful way to disinfect surfaces and prevent the spread of diseases between family members, friends, and coworkers. They are cheap and easy to use, but their market prices tend not to accurately reflect their true cost, specifically the negative cost that their production and use has on the environment. Many household cleaning products contain ingredients that can be detrimental to environmental health. They are often abundant in Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC’s)—including formaldehyde and ammonia— and nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorous. These compounds make their way into waterways when they are flushed down the drain or reach the atmosphere through evaporation (Davis, n.d.). From there, they become incorporated into Earth’s physical systems, including material cycles such as the water cycle and the phosphorous, nitrogen, and carbon cycle, and overload their natural storages. The uncontrolled increase of nutrients leads to rapid plant growth, eutrophication and the eventual creation of dead zones in aquatic environments (“Nutrient Pollution: The Effects: Environment”, n.d.), while the release of VOC’s to the atmosphere
Pollution, overpopulation, deforestation, and global warming are just some of the environmental problems that impact the world. These environmental problems can severely damage our world, and could possibly be the downfall or destruction of the world, as well as the human race. All of the four previously mentioned problems can cause environmental destruction. For example; pollution causes global warming, and the warmer weather from global warming causes the glaciers and polar ice caps to melt. The melting of the glaciers and polar ice caps make the water levels rise, and when the water level rises, people 's homes get destroyed, so then more people have to move inland. With more people inland, there becomes more overpopulation, pollution from all of the cars and factories, deforestation to make more homes, and less room to grow food, or to hold animals that provide food. These environmental problems become an example of the ripple effect, where one event leads into another, which then also leads into another, growing larger and larger. People should confront the environmental problems, because they affect us negatively, damage our world, and population.
Singapore and Malaysia are deeply affected with situations such as haze in the atmosphere due to several causes that are mainly due to human activities. The interesting part about the issue is that human activities are done in recklessness and in turn affect other human activities in the process. Human activities such as education proves that human beings are not like any other living organisms on the planet. Hence, we notice that education has to go on just like other activities which include economic development and the health industry. Moreover, there are other causes of the haze which entails the natural calamities such as heavy rainfall and tsunami. The industrial activities have been affecting the geographical environment of the two countries negatively. Hence, judging by this, life becomes very difficult for both human and animals as their health is at risk. If the issue is addressed effectively then there will be a great improvement on health, education and economy in the two countries.
