How do sleep, friends, and genetics affect weight? All three topics have a different experiment designed specifically to prove how they affect weight. These three reasons relate to psychology by focusing on sleeping patterns, genes, and the environment you live in. Obesity affects people both mentally and physically. There are very serious health risks such as, high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, and you are even at risk for cancer. The way you take care of your body could also be socially toxic, not just to yourself but to friends and family. Significant weight gain can ultimately reduce your quality of life. An experiment was conducted that involved obese people who had weight loss surgeries versus obese people who did not have weight loss surgery. Studies show that people who suffer from sleep loss are at a higher risk for obesity. The hormone leptin helps regulate the storage of body fat within your body. When you become sleep deprived your body does not produce as much leptin. The more sleep you are losing every night, increases your desire for unhealthy food and inability to do any activities. This causes you to stay in bed lounging around all day rather than being active and engaging in physical activities. Social influence is another main contributor when it comes to weight. Depending on who you surround yourself with, you may be changing your eating habits without even realizing it. You may feel pressured to look the way your friends and family do, and are encouraged to consume more food.
