How the Use of Drugs and Alcohol Affect High School Achievement
A student at Lakeside High School, called Ann for purposes of privacy, had a grade point average of 3.6 through her sophomore year. During her junior year, she dropped out of extra-curricular activities and became withdrawn from other social activities. As she was introduced to the world of hard drugs, Ann’s grades dropped to C’s and D’s. At her graduation party, she was rushed to the hospital for a heroin overdose. Ann’s grades plunged as a result of heavy drug use, a likely combination of emotional and physical degrading upon herself. Many schools are now equipped with health services that they did not provide ten years ago. Approximately 66% of the school systems in the United States provide mental health services facilitated through a school psychologist. 78.4% of states currently require an alcohol or drug prevention program. Society has changed through the use of drugs and alcohol by adapting programs to fit society’s needs. (National Center 2)
There are problems with alcohol and drug abuse in every high school system. Each school deals and records the problem differently, which is why there is not a similar percentage of use from one school to another. Some schools require students to take health classes, which cover the curriculum of drug effects. Other schools simply try to plead the cases that drugs are not an issue that pertains to academics. Society expresses the impression that alcohol helps to improve and enhance your social life, when in fact it usually has the opposite effect. The link between drug use and not liking school is strong, which is why you would rationalize it as a common factor to academic deficiency. There are currently multiple methods of trying to prevent and to educate drug and alcohol abuse in high school. (National Center 2, 4)

In "Identifying Students at Risk for Drug Use" the web site's author lists factors in a teen's life that can make him or her more susceptible to drug use and its immediate problems, such as low academic achievement, poor class attendance, and dropping out of school. Students coming from a family history of alcoholism, criminal, or antisocial behavior, are at a higher risk for drug use than students who do not have family structure and management problems. Students who have long periods of time without adult supervision and those who have bad school attendance also tend to have a lack of motivation to do school work. This means that they have alternate things to do with their time, so they are not performing as well as they could be as students.

Substance abuse is major problem amongst adolescents. Some are experimenting, but some adolescents may become dependent on a particular substance. There are three main types of drug education, sensational, affective and social. (Reist 19) With the first approach, educators use sensationalist claims and scare tactics to prevent young adults from trying drugs. This method has been proven to be remarkably ineffective, with recipients being more likely to turn to hard drugs and overdose. The second method, the affective approach, was not better. This method was based off the assumption that drug users and alcoholics have a chemical dependency because of a personal weakness or deficit. However, this method refused to acknowledge the recreational users at all. This was a major problem because people can use certain drugs and alcohol in small quantities, in a social setting without ruining their lives. These classes focused on improving decision making skills and improve individual self-esteem. The most current form of drug education focuses on helping young people resist social pressures to use drugs or alcohol. Although these programs have received more funding that other drug education programs, they are still ineffective, with the best programs only stopping or delaying drug use in the very small number of students. The influence of alcohol and drugs is not a social issue that only involved college-age population. Starting that education begins at home we can estimate this is a general problem in today's society that can be limited only to youngest.
Many young adults who go into a substance abuse treatment program, will discover that they have some type of an underlying mental health issue. There are several reasons for someone to have a type of mental health issue before they start using or while they are using. Sometimes they already have been diagnosed thus the reason they use substances to replace the prescribed medications, because they don’t like the way prescription medications make them feel. Other times some of these issues develop during the time that the individual has been using substances, in response to an environmental issue, and the person does not know. Sometimes the issue is a lack of growth and development, which occurs due to substances interfering with the young person’s ability to acquire the life skills, the same as persons who do not use substances have learned. In that case, the individual will not know whatever issue exists, or how it will affect them when they stop using.

There has been much research to prove that drugs cause chemical and structural changes in the brain and its function. As stated by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, “[Addiction] is considered a brain disease because drugs change the brain—they change its structure and how it works. These brain changes can be long-lasting, and can lead to the harmful behaviors seen in people who abuse drugs” (2014). When the brain is chemically or structurally altered, it changes how the brain functions, influencing continued use of the drug (National Institute on Drug Abuse, 2014). One study asked counselors about the prevalence of substances used by high school students and found that the counselors most often dealt with alcohol issues (Burrow-Sanchez & Lopez, 2009). While alcohol may be one of the most widely dealt with substances from a counselor’s perspective, it is essential to be able to identify signs of alcohol abuse and other substance abuse so that action can be taken. Signs of substance abuse can vary, but within a school setting school counselors and other stakeholders can look for changes in academic performance, truancy, withdrawal, isolation, impulsive behavior, changes in mood (anxiety, anger, depression, irritation), changes in appearance, poor hygiene, tardiness, dropping out of sports and other school activities, and associating with peers known to use drugs, (Burrow-Sanchez, Jenson, & Clark, 2009; Flaherty, Sutphen, & Ely, 2012; Hagedorn, & Young, 2011). These signs of possible substance abuse issues need to be looked at further if a student is identified as having any of these signs as other things could be going on. When student are high it is hard for them to learn and concentrate on the correct things. Doing drugs can also cause students to forget things easily so it can make can make it harder to pay attention and remember the tools for the test. It also takes aways from the other students who actually want to learn. Students may starts on a less harmful drug but it can lead to the more harmful and scary drugs. Drugs can also cause mental effects. Students bodies and brains are not fully developed and using drugs can be harmful to them. Not all students do drugs but the ones that do can have behavior issues.
The use of alcohol in adolescences is one of the major health problems in the United States. Adolescent are constantly changing and constantly adapting to the environment, especially when they are in college. This does not only apply to college students only, but even younger adolescents.
