However, there are external and internal influencing forces regarding human behavior that impact how we interact with others or behave in the workplace. It is vital for all employees in a company (regardless if they work in the Human Relations Department or) to be aware of influencing factors so they can not only be successful with their performance, but be successful as a team and help bolster the company’s successes. Some of the most important influencing factors are organizational climate/culture, work/life balance, Supervisor/Management, conflict/resolution, job performance/responsibility, and personal characteristics.

Effective supervisors gain respect without demanding it. Approachability, collaboration with colleagues, encouragement, and leading by example foster respect. Supervision relationships with mutual trust lead to supervisee's personal and professional growth.

A supervisor must remain approachable from their subordinates. With this approachability and accessibility the supervisor will be successful in building a better working relationship. The difficulty with some supervisors is the ability to draw the line between having a personal relationship with their subordinates and a professional relationship. With a close working relationship a supervisor should be able to confront the subordinate and be able to resolve the issue. The resolution may range from simply counseling the subordinate, all the way up to possible disciplinary action.

As I think over the jobs I have held throughout my life. I had one supervisor I appreciated the most. This was a nursing supervisor, and I appreciated this individual the most because she was totally different from the other supervisors on the job.She was very hard at first, but she got easier as we showed her she could trust us. I found even though she was hard, she had our backs. When she felt we were doing the right thing, she would fight tooth and nail for us.

2. Supervisory essentials-- How to be a good supervisor and the role it plays in the workforce.

Coming from the end of the baby-boomer generation, I have only had four jobs since high school and less than ten different supervisors. Naturally, some were better than others. The really bad ones are the easiest to remember and contributed to my managerial skills as much as much the best one, by teaching me qualities that I did not want to copy. The one single supervisor that taught me more about supervising people was Terry Bowman who was a Captain when I served under him. He had several characteristics that I still try to emulate to this day.

Attitudes are thoughts that you have accepted as true and that lead you to think, feel, or act positively or negatively toward a person, idea or event. They represent an emotional readiness to behave in a particular manner. (Reece) Positive and negative attitudes affect how you work and how you influence other people around you. These attitudes can absolutely be changed though because we are not born with those attitudes. We form them as time passes, depending on the situations that we have been through. For instance, if you had a job where your supervisor was racist toward you, you would begin to form a negative attitude about supervisors thinking that all of them are going to be racist. Instead, you can change your attitude by thinking that not everyone acts the same way. A positive attitude can make a difference between an amazing life and a nonsense one. Therefore, a lot of people should try to change their attitude to a positive one.

A good supervisor will inspire, challenge, and motivate their employees. In addition, a supervisor has the ability to stay focused and is able see the big picture. However, one could possibly argue that the best quality that a good supervisor must possess is the skill to recognize the potential in others. Nevertheless, the most important skill a supervisor must possess is the ability to help those around realize their own potential.

In contrast with the past workplace challenges and organizational behavior, there is a necessity to understand ourselves and others. Sometimes the stress and prestige can cause an adverse impact on one’s position in the workplace. The ability to deal with our emotions while working effectually with others and at the same time, performing the organization’s expectations are in high demand. Since the employees are an asset, and the organization is expecting a return on their investment, understanding how emotions work and how it impacts one’s capacity is indispensable in accomplishing organizational goals. In the workplace, people often have to work with each other. So the handling of relationships and interacting with others becomes the key to the success of the organization. Managers need to have a combination of skills and abilities such as the strength of will, awareness of self, empathy for others and sensitivity toward others internally and externally. Before one can handle others emotions he/she must first learn to lead themselves. So the question become, how is this done?
