Human trafficking has become an international crime, affecting the lives of men, women, and children. There are several motives for human trafficking, but in Nepal, trafficking is mainly concentrated on domestic work and prostitution. While most people wouldn’t associate disease and post-traumatic stress disorder with victims of human trafficking, in reality, it tragically affects the lives of many women.

These women and young girls not only suffer from being taken away from their families, but also dealing with being beaten, sexually abused, but also undergo mental strain and illness.
The women who are trafficked suffer from a great deal of psychological abuse, leading to many mental health issues. In Cathy Zimmerman, Mazeda Hossain, and Charlotte Watt’s article, the authors describe different factors that lead to mental health issues in survivors. Traffickers use forms of intimidations to coerce women to obey and refrain from seeking rescue by threatening their loved ones and using blackmail. Because the women are being sold to different people constantly, their surroundings change uncontrollably, and often end up in unsafe environments. Due to these drastic changes and living in constant fear has lead to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which can cause sleep issues, nightmares, memory loss, violent outbursts, and other aggressive behavior. Along with PTSD, many survivors experience signs of depression, leading to self-harm, and even suicide. “17% of trafficked women who had worked as sex workers, scored over the cut-off point of measurement for PTSD and 19% were over the cut-off on the depression scale” (Mental health of female survivors of human trafficking in

Not only are cases being reported on a global scale, but it’s happening to both genders and many nationalities. It’s a form of modern day slavery, having components of forced labor, and forced sexual acts. Human trafficking is the illegal movement of people, typically for the purposes of forced labor or commercial sexual exploitation. This may include providing a spouse in a forced marriage or the extraction of organs or tissues. Yuri Fedotov, the head of the U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime, said,“At any one time, 2.4 million people suffer the misery of this humiliating and degrading crime.” It is estimated that only one out of 100 victims of trafficking are ever rescued.

Human Trafficking is the second fastest increasing criminal industry today, after the illegal drug industry, and is commonly referred to as "modern-day slavery”. The international, legal definition of human trafficking is ‘using someone by force or deception for the purpose of exploiting them for economic or personal gain.’ (From prescha.org) It is simply the illegal trade of human beings- for example, most commonly kidnapping, abducting, or lying to others to use them for prostitution and other forms of sexual exploitation, forced labour, slavery, and the removal of organs. The trafficker’s purpose of this is to earn an economic or personal profit.
Human trafficking has been a controversial issue for many years. There are different types of trafficking, which helps makes it a widely diverse issue. In Thailand, traffickers rely on the poor desperate people of other countries as well as their own to fulfill their needs financially, physically, and emotionally. Thailand has various reasons why they use human trafficking; sex exploitation, forced labor, and obtaining their organs for an organ transplant. Sex exploitation has been used by mainly men for a long time. They choose both women and children to violate, sometimes even men. The prettier the woman is the more she is worth. All men, woman, and children could be forced into labor. This varies from what the owner wants from them. People can also choose to go and work for them because they think this is their only way of making money, but they usually do not see much of it. Finally, others purchase them just for their organs. There are very long waiting lists on some organs, by the time one comes about the person in need of the organ has already passed away. There are a number of steps and reasons that are involved in human trafficking. With all of these issues of; sex exploitations, and forced labor, and organ trafficking, the trafficked can become physically and mentally injured.
Rape is one of the harsh punishments the women face. One trafficker, Tajuan, explains how she and others were forced to watch her best friend get raped as way of proving that punishment would happen if quota was not met (Calhoun 2). The same trafficker shares stories of others and herself being starved, being forced to take drugs, or being killed (Calhoun 2). In one instance, Tajuan said, “ In the next eleven years, I worked for many traffickers; I’ve been left for dead. I still have a scar where my throat was cut with a straight razor” (Calhoun 2). All of these acts violate human rights given in Article Five of the United States Constitution: “No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment” (youthforhumanrights.org). All human beings should have the right to walk away from the torture or get help for relief, but in some cases, it is not that easy. Many victims share the same story as Tajuan when asked “why can you not just walk away?” Tajuan’s reply is like many others; she could not escape because it was the only life she knew. The struggle for protection, food, and no other way to make a living is what prevents the victims from escaping the life of human trafficking. “You feel as if you have nowhere to go” (Calhoun 2).
“43% of victims are used for forced commercial sexual exploitation, of whom 98% are women and girls” (UNGIFT). Women and girls are ensnared in sex trafficking in a variety of ways. Some are lured in with offers of real and legal work in restaurants, massage parlors, or anything else. Others are promised marriage, education and a better life. Still others are sold into trafficking by boyfriends, friends, neighbors or even parents (SOROPTMIST). Many of the girls and women are also forced into pornography. With all of the types of sexual exploitation comes abuse. Sexual, physical, and emotional are all types of abuse put onto females in human trafficking. Many people traffic others in hopes of getting money, work done, or just pure pleasure.
Rehabilitation for victims is available such as Freedom Place and Dream Center. Joy Friedman, a survivor of 27 years of sex trafficking in the United States, now serves as women’s program manager at Breaking Free, a Minnesota nonprofit group that helps women and children escape that world. On average, sex trafficking victims are between 12 and 14. It is estimated that between 100,000 and 300,000 U.S. children are sex slaves. Providing care for these victims is very important, their self-esteem is completely demolished and don’t know where to begin to fix themselves.
Human trafficking, the illegal practice of trading in human beings for the purpose of prostitution, forced labor, or other forms of exploitation, is a crime that affects the most vulnerable citizens of society. After drugs, it the largest criminal activity globally! The victims must be the primary concern for all law enforcement units. Human trafficking in the world can be diminished and possibly erased through teachings, government intervention, and awareness.

It is caused by the constant practice of human trafficking.
In the United States, estimates suggest that over 300,000 women and children become victims of commercial sexual exploitation in relation to human trafficking. Sexual exploitation plays a huge part on individual victims, who often suffer physical and emotional abuse, rape, threats against self and family, passport theft, and even death. The impact of human trafficking on victims can take many forms and can have a lasting effect on the victim’s quality of life. Women and children are smuggled across national borders and forced in factories and brothels and made to perform sex acts against their will. One
Within a day, anyone can be kidnapped and forced against their will. The global issue of human trafficking has several current problems that requires attention from most citizens. To start off with, human trafficking proves as the fastest growing crime around the world. Even when gun violence, theft, homicide, and murders occur, human trafficking rates increase every year more than an average crime. As a matter of fact, sex trafficking is recorded as the top trafficking issue, not only across the nation, but worldwide. One of the main reasons why such cases go unnoticed by the public eye is due to the victims believing that they are the ones committing the crime of prostitution. Even with traumatizing and petrifying events trafficked victims have to experience, no one could fathom or believe the fear they have of law
Human trafficking is when a person is forced or tricked into working under terrible conditions. The victims of human trafficking may be kidnapped or are sometimes lured with false promises for a better future in a new country. Human trafficking is a high-profit and low-risk endeavor for the traffickers.
