A Positive Change
Hunger… this affects an estimate of 13 million children in America and about 795 million people worldwide. Hunger is a severe crisis that has been continuously growing in many homes throughout our community. Children and families in Laredo are suffering from this epidemic and it is important to spread awareness to end it. Personally, I believe that when you help one person, you are one step closer to changing the world. As a human being, it is our duty to recognize the struggles our community faces and help people from our community surpass these problems. A way I would help with humanitarian efforts in our community is by volunteering and sharing the stories of the people whose lives were affected. Around our city of Laredo, in the county of Webb, we have many people that would go hungry if not identified. Many of these people in our community do not qualify for social services due to the family’s being undocumented. It is the community’s responsibility to educate and find these people who might otherwise go hungry. It is a challenge where our border community needs to help and provide the basic needs for children and families in our area. I would like to work hand in hand with local foodbanks and begin to expand a community garden which would provide vegetables to people in need of food. If the community comes together to motivate our population to be aware of hunger in our community, we would all be better because of the help that we may provide

By understanding and becoming aware of this problem, our community has the power to impact thousands of people in Laredo by simply helping our local foodbanks provide the much-needed
The topic I’m discussing is Hunger in the state of Texas. In Texas child food insecurity was at 27.6 percent. Also, one in six texans live in poverty. In 2002 15 percent of texans faced low food insecurity. Food insecurity reached 18.4 percent in 2012. Obesity is at 28.9 perecent the 12th highest in the whole country. Median household income is at 49.392 the 25th highest in the country. In 2011 there were 4,812,760 food insecure people in Texas. Texas's Child Food Insecurity Rate in 2011 was 27.6% which includes 1,849,060 children and places Texas 9th highest in child food insecurity in the United States. More than 6 billion dollars of funds are designated for hunger related programs in Texas went unused in 2010.In 2010, less than 70% of Texans who were eligible for a food program participated in the program.
Thesis Statement: The Houston Food Bank uses the efforts of volunteers as well as donations to support the reduction of hunger in the community.
On Tuesday evening, over fifty of our leaders from Auto, Innovation, and Recovery came to fight hunger and feed hope at the San Antonio Food Bank. Collectively they sorted through 20,330 pounds of food which resulted in 16,264 meals for the city of San Antonio and it's surrounding counties. It was an evening of camaraderie and fun that will never be forgotten.
In conclusion, hunger in America is at an all time high due to poverty and the economy. The increasingly high number of starving children has gone up over the past years and needs to be stopped. There are government programs set up to help stop hunger in American, such as, SNAP Food Stamps and WIC. We can get involved by volunteering with Feeding America or other non-for-profit organizations set for feeding the hungry. Food donations and monetary donations have always been a great way to help out for those who don’t have the time to donate.
In the foreword, Bridges states he and the political will are part of the problem of hidden hunger in America. He does not give us much information on what he was not doing before he decided to help. Bridges also states that we could help end this problem just as much as anyone else can, but he never furthers the thought after this. Bridges could inform us on what he meant when he was the problem and how we individual's reading this could help end this problem. We do not see ads on television telling us the people in our own country are starving. The politicians have so much power and if they are standing for what they believe in then most would think there would be no hunger in America. The politicians should be making sure that everyone
Many people do not realize that hunger and malnutrition is a problem that many Americans face on a daily basis. Maybe, we are failing to realize that our country is not perfect, but if we don’t try to do anything then more and more children will die. The problem with child hunger is that the United States may not face as dramatic problems with hunger as that of other countries, but
The service site is composed of hundreds of people, from all over the state of Illinois, from different walks of life, looking to fulfill one mission; to help people. Not only are we composed of a diverse group of people, but we serve a diverse group of people. There is diversity in every aspect from race, religion, socioeconomical and employment status. Hunger is not only experienced by people suffering homelessness. We serve more people who works part time and fulltime jobs more than homeless or elderly people. The diversity I was submerged in forced me to question the factors of hunger, of course. The many reasons we discussed in class, such as food deserts and low working wages, are high weighing factors for people experiencing hunger in this and surround communities. Learning and acknowledging these facts allows for a decent plan of
In Texas 1 in 4 children which equals 1.8 million, are hungry or at risk of hunger. Texas is the 2nd highest state with food not guaranteed to children among all 50 of the states.Texas also ranks as the third highest state in household food uncertainty. Community gardens help reduce the food shortage, also it helps build the community, and improve health by increasing the vegetable
I would march for the people who don't have an education and that are facing hunger problems. Being able to do this will give the kids and adults that haven't received an education and that are facing hunger. I would be brave enough to fight for their rights and be more active to what's happening around the world. We are facing big problems and we are almost getting to the road where there is going to be true equality in our country. Some people are not being able to vote (certain people). We will need to come a long way to help the kids and adults who have suffered from hunger to their educational rights. Some specific people are not able to have a job just because of their race. People are still treating other people with no respect and
Though many local food banks and schools have contributed to fixing this issue, there is much more that can be done alleviate the problem. Contacting Solano County’s schools and community leaders to expand summer food programs will benefit students who rely on school food for their daily meals. Furthermore, working with care and homes centers will not only assist the staff members, but will also ensure children and adults get a nutritional meal every day. Donating cans of food whenever there is a food drive at school or any place asking is another way to provide food for those who need it. Raising awareness to those who do not know about local food drives and programs will also help. Of course, there is always an option to start a new food drive. By lending a helping hand, there will be more smiles on the faces of children and adults who have not done so in a long
Mexico is a big country, but much of it is dry. The problem/challenge is according to the World Bank, 53% of Mexico’s population is poor (living on less than $2 per day), while 24% percent is extremely poor (living on less than $1 per day), only 14% of the nation's land is refined and well educated or used for plantations and orchards and this is a problem because most of the Mexican people live in poverty. Mexico have tried to solve this problem by fighting poverty and hunger and opening a Freedom from Hunger office in Mexico city that will serve very poor, rural people. Also, Mexican farmers are trying to grow enough to meet the needs of the people in Mexico. Most of the food that is consumed by Mexicans is raised on Mexican farms and Mexico
We are reaching out to our community neighbors asking them to host a “Taking Steps Against Hunger”
Do you know what it feels like to go hungry ? not just your stomach growling , but you go in the fridge and there is physically nothing , not a scrap or a crumb in sight ? I am sure that by far most of us don't have to worry about starving , yet there are people who do. 20 Million People in 4 Countries Face Starvation (aid chief). It’s actually scary to consider those people that don't persevere through the night of not having any food. There are such an extensive number of ways that world longing can be slaughtered. Together, we could raise money, start support drives, fundraisers in schools, work, big events , and the list goes on. If just single individual got out there and fed the needy , essentially imagine the lives that could be saved. Its shocking how much just a single person can do. yet by conveying issues to light, and helping one another out we can all have a part in ending world hunger.
In 2014, a foundation called Feeding America did a survey on the people they serve and found that in order to stretch their food budgets 79% of them purchase inexpensive and unhealthy food in order to stay fed. This can seriously impact their health, because no matter the age, healthy bodies and minds require nutritious meals. In some cases, food insecurity can even lead to Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and obesity. These are just a few examples of why food insecurity is so harmful. Fortunately, there are many organizations, clubs, and foundations that are committed to ending hunger in America, and eventually the world. The first step to solving this problem is spreading information, and realizing just how dangerous food insecurity is, and who it affects. After learning these things, you may want to help and there are many ways to do that. I’m sure in the past, you've donated food to the annual canned food drive our school puts on, and that’s just one way you can contribute to solving this problem. There are many organizations that ask for donations and will put your money to great use, for example every dollar you donate to Feeding America will provide 11 meals for a child in need.If you don’t have food or money to donate, you can donate
John F. Kennedy once said, “Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.” There are many ways we can help make a difference in our country. So many people are starving and has no shelter from the weather and other ways of harm. According to Gunder, Dana from the National Resources Defense Council in 2012, “40% of food is thrown out in the US every year, or about $165 billion worth. All of this uneaten food could feed 25 million Americans.” While some people are having huge meals and even throwing some away others aren’t as fortunate and it is lucky for some people to even provide food for their families. While most American’s are going to sleep in their own beds in shelter, a lot aren’t that lucky.
