The Impact of the 2010 Institute of Medicine (IOM) Report on the Future of Nursing in Education, Practice and Leadership

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) report: The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health; was a product of collaboration between the IOM and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF). They worked together to research viable solutions for the current healthcare systems problems. The IOM is an American non-profit , private organization. Providing national advice on medical and health topics, with the goal of improving the health of the nation, is the purpose of the IOM.

Throughout the process of composing this report, the Committee of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Initiative on the Future of Nursing devised and enacted what is known as the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action. The engendering of the "Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health" was a major component of that initiative. With an estimated 64 million people having seen the Institute of Medicine’s reccomendations on the future of nursing within the first year of its release, it is arguably one of the most influential pieces of medical literature of the 21st century, leaving a lasting impact on healthcare and paving an innovative path forward for the nursing profession. The institute of Medicine (IOM) is a nonprofit, unaffiliated orginazition. Its purpose is to provide advice to the government and private sector in order to make an informed health decision. The IOM was established in 1970, and for the past 40 years, the organization has been answering the nation’s most pressing questions about healthcare.

The Institute of Medicine’s 2010 report on The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health acknowledges the changing healthcare sector in the US and describes future vision of healthcare and the role of nurses to fulfill that vision. The United States always strives to provide affordable and quality healthcare to the entire population of the country. In order to achieve this goal an overall restructuring of the healthcare system was necessitated. Nurses are considered to be the central part of the healthcare system to provide high quality and safe patient care. This assignment requires that I develop and thoroughly analyze a public policy in order to advocate for one that improves the health of the public and/or the nursing profession globally (local, state, national or international). The impact of report on practice particularly in primary care is very huge. Over the past decades, we have realized, with every passing decade, nursing has become an increasingly integral part of the healthcare services, so that a future without large numbers of nurses is highly impossible to envision. We have also witnessed the drastic changes and advancement that have happened in the field of nursing over the past decades. Nurses have to change their current health care practice in order to meet the growth and also the goals of the IOM report.

Impact on Nursing of the 2010 Institute of Medicine (IOM) on the future of nursing.

During the conference there are various events, exhibitions, and educational opportunities to explore. The NBNA promotes nursing policy and activism within the organization by spearheading various programs. The organization hosts a, “national Black nurses day on capitol hill, to educate the U.S. Congress on the nursing shortage, the nursing profession, and health care disparities. The Institute of Excellence (IOE) was created for the collaboration of local and national nurses to join forces with other local, national, and international leaders” (NBNA, 2014). This unison will address health, social issues, and the eradication of health disparities. The organizations participation and influence regarding nursing policy and activism, showcases their commitment to ensure the highest quality of healthcare locally and globally.

Review the Institute of Medicine (IOM) report: "The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health," focusing on the following sections: Transforming Practice, Transforming Education, and Transforming Leadership.

Nursing practice is also one of the key messages addressed in the IOM report. The report suggests that “nurses should practice to full extent of their education and training”. Furthermore, “nurses should be full partners with physicians and other health professionals, in redesigning health care in the United States. This report has a great impact on nursing practice. The IOM report suggests that greater focus on managing the transition from nursing to practice. It recommends that regulatory reforms must be made to allow nurses to expand their scope of practice (IOM report, 2010).

For current and future needs we need to enable all healthcare professionals especially nurses to practice to the full level of their education and training. Advanced practice nurses can fulfill the primary care needs. This will free up physicians to address more complex cases which needs their expertise. Current practice focus on specialty and acute care only and a shift in practice to deliver more primary care and community care services is essential to improve the quality of nursing care and address the growing need of care in these areas.

In November of 2010, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) released “The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health”. This special report examined the current state of nursing and changing landscape of the American healthcare system and offered recommendations for the future role nurses should play. The committee that released the report, Committee on the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, divided it into three parts. Part II of the study, focused on transforming the nursing profession in order to improve America’s healthcare system. In order to achieve this transformation, the committee recommended that nurses attain higher levels of education and training, practice to the full extent of that education and training, and assume more

“Nurses are more than caregivers in today’s healthcare settings. They are teachers, advocates and pioneers in improving healthcare. They are stepping out of the old model and taking ownership for changes in healthcare. Nurses are developing their own scientific research programs to improve patient care. They are playing a pivotal role in healthcare reform. Nurses are becoming leaders, not followers in healthcare reform.”

Being a registered nurse affords one the option of working in many diverse healthcare settings. In any practice setting the climate of health care change is evident. There are diverse entities involved in the implementation and recommendation of these practice changes. These are led by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), the Institute of Medicine (IOM), nursing campaign for action initiatives, as well as individual state-based action coalitions. Nurses need to be prepared and cognizant of the transformations occurring in health care settings as well as the plans that put them at the forefront of the future.
