In this section of my assignment I will be introducing the ICT skills required within a health and social care setting. I will state what each of the skills are, the benefits for carrying them out and the disadvantages of them if they are not carried out properly. It is important for staff working in a health and social care setting to have adequate ICT skills. This is because more records and data are being stored online, and ICT is becoming more and more common. Having these skills means they are able to carry out a range of tasks at an easier and quicker rate. Some of the tasks include: • To collect and input data • To access data • To find data • To save data • To store data • To protect data • To share data Collecting and inputting data means collecting information and inputting it into a system. An example in a health and social care setting would be a secretary in a GP’s office collecting information on a service user such as obtaining their appointment time, and then inputting this information into the practises system so that the GP now knows this individual has checked in and is ready to be seen too. This method of ICT is seen as beneficial as it means there is no need for excessive paperwork to be filled out and stored. Although, others do not wish for their information to be collected and inputted into a database system, as they believe these systems can be easily hacked and therefore their data can be used by another person e.g. fraud. Accessing data means
Communication skill help us to perform activities well, in care setting, we must have good communication to communicate with clients and other staff members. It helps us to work with others, e.g. What task needs doing now, how many staff members are needed to do it e.g. Mrs x needs a bed pan, who is going to him or her to provide help in using the hoist to ensure client safety there must be communication to ensure activity is carried out safely. We need interpersonal skills like writing a report, care plans to talk to medical teams like doctors, GP, physio or occupational therapist or other professionals and also to relatives or anyone else involved in the clients care.
So In this assignment I am going to be talking about the different communication skills used in a health settings i.e. (hospitals, nursery, mental institute, schools,

The nursing field is caring, dependable, and effective. None of which could be accomplished without teamwork, collaboration and informatics. I believe these concepts are fundamental in the nursing profession. Nurses must work with other healthcare staff, the patients and their families to provide patient-centered and quality care. The use of informatics enhance both the quality of care the clients receive and the teamwork and collaboration aspect of nursing. No one nurse can do it all on their own. Nursing requires the use of teamwork and new technology.
Informatics has many possibilities and benefits. The ever growing technology can improve healthcare to protect patients and the medical staff. At Lakeland they use Epic for electronic computer charting, which decreases time to do and increase availability time. With Epic they have designed safety checks to pop up with wrong medication or even different dosage than ordered to prevent medical errors from happening. Now Guardian is slowly being worked into the system to decrease time it take to input vitals for patients. On some units they have a large screen in the huddle room which allows you to click into a patient's chart and focus in on key things. It even has a list screen that helps you to keep track of daily weights, pain reassessments, and I&Os for all patients on that
In choosing one of the QSEN competencies to describe and how it impact our practice, and the future of our practice teamwork and collaboration and informatics both came to mind. It was difficult to separate the two, because for many of us technology (informatics), has changed the way we all communicate in our individual practices, and many nurses feel that health informatics and its clinical application at the bedside in some instances actually take away from patient care, some facilities have not yet made the integration from paper to electronic records and documentation.
1. When working in Health and Social care it is important that you have the right level of basic skills.
Informatics is a specialty in the nursing field that is combined with certain science. As stated by ANA (2008) “nursing informatics (NI) is a specialty that integrates nursing science, computer science, and information science to manage and communicate data, information, knowledge, and wisdom in nursing practice” (p. 65). ANA further focus on the functional areas rather than the role that guides the scope of practice within NI. These functional areas include: “administration, leadership, and management; analysis; compliance and integrity management; consultation; coordination, facilitation, and integration; development; educational and professional development; research and evaluation; policy development and advocacy; and telehealth” (CCN, 2015, para. 1). With these functional areas in mind, a nursing informatics specialist can perform proficiently, depending on the specific task. Hence, the purpose of this paper is to summarize the result of an interview with a NI specialist and analyze the differences and similarities between the interviewee’s functional areas with that of scholarly ones.
The first section of content, information management and knowledge generation is broken into three sub categories, foundations of nursing informatics, models and theories, and human computer interactions. Knowledge and skills in these areas are an essential part of informatics nursing.
I learned about the five core competencies and how to effectively implement them into my practice. The five core competencies consist of providing patient-centered care, working in interprofessional teams, engaging in evidenced-based practice, applying quality improvement and utilizing informatics (Jones & Bartlett Learning, 2014). Of these, the one that I feel to be continuously evolving and if not applied correctly can create medical errors is informatics. According to Jones and Bartlett Learning (2014), informatics is combining nursing health with computer technology. Technology allows nurses to be more efficient with documentation, increases communication and allows more time to be spent with direct patient
Some useful qualities to be successful in this career include: dependability, willingness to learn, self motivation, competence, enthusiasm, responsibility, discretion and team player. Your dependability is crucial for a company to run smoothly, dependability can be just coming to work on time, but more importantly completing your task on time and accurately. Since you will be inputting patients’ information into a computer system for record keeping purposes, it is of the utmost importance to make sure information is keyed in accurately. This information is used by doctors, other health care facilities and for insurance purposes, so it is important that all information is correct, so that business can run smoothly. It is also important that the information is correct, because someone’s life may one day depend on the accuracy of the information. In any job enthusiasm is rather important, if you do not enjoy your job, you do not work
In observation, (Fahnestock, McComb, & Deshmukh, 2013) stated "Information technologies are transforming the way healthcare is delivered. Innovations such as computer-based patient records, hospital information systems, computer-based decision support tools, community health information networks and new ways of distributing health information.” (p.3.2). In the sector of delivering healthcare using technology, has made it easier for healthcare professionals to access medical records, digitization of prescriptions and view test results. With the use of high-performance devices being used in the hospital, helps to make the jobs of healthcare professionals a little easier. As well as relieve anxiety from anxious patients that may be awaiting lab results to come back. Therefore, IT devices and services has been and continues to be a tremendous help and game changer for the healthcare system. However, there is still a lot of work to be done to help shape and reform the healthcare
Other healthcare organizations have integrated the design of healthcare technologies within the organization. For such organizations, the CIO takes part in the analysis and assessments of the proposed healthcare information technology (HIT) applications. The CIO further manages the development, design and implementation of the HITs. In addition, healthcare organizations are rapidly acquiring HITs. Therefore, there is an increasing need to train the healthcare staff to ensure they can use the systems. The CIO, therefore, plans and supervises the development of training methods for the management and technical staff on the use and possible maintenance of the HITs (Tan, Payton, & Tan, 2010).
With the rapid growth in the implementation and use of electronic medical records, there is an increase in how we define the role of nurses and other team member’s (Deese & Stien, 2004). Along with providing optimal care, nurses are also responsible for interpreting and accurately documenting large amounts of information. According to, (Ericksen, 2009) nursing informatics is defined as the integration of nursing, its information, and information management with information processing and communication technology to support the health of people worldwide. In this
Technology and innovation have transformed the way people function personally and professionally. In the past, writing and mailing a letter was standard but now most people send electronic messages and text messages to phones. Healthcare has been changing tremendously as well, not only are paper charts and records becoming obsolete, but now many facilities are sharing test results, visit information details, and prescribed drug lists. This move into the digital age has helped improve healthcare by cutting costs in the long-term, increasing efficiency with decreased wait times, and reducing medical errors. This evolving technology expansion, commonly referred to as nursing informatics has created many
