Importance Of Motivation In The Workplace

All employees analyze their environment and strive to be recognized and rewarded for their hard work and dedication they put into the company, in a word they are seeking justice. Justice can be defined as a person receiving what they feel they are entitled to and if they do not receive what they deserve the situation may board on injustice. Unfortunately in today’s society justice and appreciation are not given out to all those deserving (Pinder, 1998). A major problem to address is how to keep the motivation level high in a company when the employees do not feel appreciated.

Motivation is: “the psychological process that gives behaviour purpose and direction (Kreitner, 1995); a predisposition to behave in a purposive manner to achieve specific, unmet needs (Buford, Bedeian, & Lindner, 1995); an internal drive to satisfy an unsatisfied need (Higgins, 1994); and the will to achieve” (Bedeian, 1993). Due to the difference in the definitions for motivation, I will use the definition – Motivation is the inner drive that allows individuals to achieve company and personal goals.

Motivation is a word used quite often in many different scenarios, at work, home, the gym as well as other places. In order to explore employee motivation, let us first define the term. According to Spector (2012), “motivation is generally defined as an internal state that induces a person to engage in particular behaviors” (p.194). This seems to be some sort of internal pressure that helps propel us forward in whatever endeavor we might be undertaking at the time. As with any topic that has been repetitively researched over the years, the word motivation has been defined in many different ways. In 1981 Kleinginna and Kleinginna documented 140 different definitions of the word. For the purpose of this research we will be focusing on work or employee motivation. Motivation is the complex forces starting and keeping a person at work in the organization.

For this assignment, I am going to describe and discuss several motivation theories. Then I will compare and contrast different aspects of the theories to each other and discuss how the different theories relate to my workplace.

Motivation is a crucial tool to retain and bring the best out of human capital of an organization. Most successful organizations plan their motivational strategies based on employee needs and requirement. Likewise, motivational strategies may differ for employees in early career from that of late career workers.

Merriam-Webster (n.d.) defines motivation as “the act or process of giving someone a reason for doing something.” In the XXXXX of a day, employee motivation is fueled by personal and contextual factors that impact engagement and performance. Both factors influence the employee, but do so based on the individual physiological or psychology need of the employee.

Motivation is the study of what makes us do things. Every day we are faced with many decisions. What choice we make is the study of motivation. There are several theories of motivation; the theory of opportunity-cost is the most widely recognized. This paper will discuss (1) the major forces that drive us, (2) diverse influences, and (3) tangible and intangible outputs.

Contentment and satisfaction of employees is extremely important as jobs are becoming more specified, selecting and training another set of workers is a long, expensive process. Motivation is the strongest, most efficient way to keep employees happy and at peak performance and things such as just saying “thank you” go a long way. In a study completed by Forbes, who polled over 2,000 professionals found that 53% of workers are more likely to stay with a company for a longer period of time solely based off of them receiving more appreciation from their boss/manager. That same study also found that 81% of workers are more motivated at work when their boss shows appreciation or thanks. Human resources has a huge part to play in this because of their role in the development, maintenance, and retention of employees. The HR management must make sure that bosses and managers with workers under their supervision feel appreciated and heard. This will lead to the employees working harder and/or better, making them more proud and happy, while benefiting the business by having a more efficient worker.

This topic was chosen as my research because I believe a company is nothing without its’ employees. In choosing this topic, it better helps me to understand motivation and how it is used to push employees, helping in the success in the business.

Motivation is an important factor in one’s life. You learn what motivates you at a very young age. Although you may not know the word or understand what it means, you still accomplish a goal to receive a reward or know not to do something that will get you in trouble. Why do you do the things you do? Why do you get excited when presented with a positive reward or upset when presented with a negative reward? It’s all about you and what you desire most or want to avoid; and it differs in each individual. When a young teenager is told to clean his room and then he can go to the movies, this is a positive reinforcement or motivator to get the parent’s desired outcome. When you apply the motivation theories in the workplace, the main goal is to have the employee perform their duties to achieve the company’s desired outcome. There are several motivational theories offered as templates for organizations to utilize the way they see fit. The ultimate outcome of these theories is that the employee with the right motivator, whether it’s positive or negative reinforcement, will encourage the employee to perform at their best. The leadership-follower aspect is crucial in motivating correctly in the workplace.

Once I would like to start off explaining what motivation in the workplace. Motivation is an employee 's intrinsic enthusiasm about and drive to accomplish activities related to work. Motivation is that internal drive that causes an individual to decide to take action. The five job related factors that can hinder motivation in the workplace are (1) Inadequate Job Skills, (2) Opportunity for Advancement, (3) Overwork, (4) Respect from Co-worker, and (5) Job security.

Motivation is defined as the drive within a person to achieve a goal. The challenge that supervisors and employers have is how to help their employees to develop the drive to complete a goal within themselves. Numerous studies and experiments have been done on how best to motivate employees. Theories have developed around the results of these studies, each is tailored to the circumstances of the time, place, and people that participated in the study so they do not apply directly to every situation.

Achieving motivation at the workplace is extremely important as the desire for workers to perform more efficiently and higher in terms of quality can directly influence the overall performance of a company (Ridgeway, 1982). Thus, discovering the best way to achieve motivation at work is a very necessary topic to be discussed. However, the definition of “the best” may vary from person to person. “The best way to achieve motivation” in this essay is defined as achieving work efficiency as high as possible while maintaining the high morale of employees.

Motivation ‘’ is a process that account an individual’s intensity, direction and persistence of effort toward attaining a goal’’ (Stephen, p155). Furthermore, motivation can be a technique to encourage people so that they can perform their work more efficiently towards achievement or milestone. Whereas some people say that we can motivate employee by praising them during their work and properly understand the requirements faced by the workers. There is variety of motivation theories and we will see why these theories are important because that is crucial to help employee to do work harder, faster and more seriously.
