Importance of Theory Theory can have different meaning depending on the setting. Theory can be based on a hypothesis or simply a collection or thoughts and ideas. Nursing theories, provide ideas and designs that define the place of nursing in healthcare. Theories are a fundamental part of nursing and exist to improve patient care outcomes. In 2001, Jean Watson’s caring theory was adopted in the health system where I work as a registered nurse. The Nurse Governance Council adopted the Watson’s philosophy and theory to guide nursing practice. Watson’s theory of caring provides a combination of highly technical but cost efficient healthcare while providing a more human way of caring. This paper will analyze the importance of Jean Watson’s caring theory and also focus on key concepts and important aspects of this theory inpatient care setting. Theories have been a fundamental part of nursing since the early stages of the profession. When nursing was a new discipline, theorists began to determine the theoretical basis of practice.Nursing theories were used to define the person receiving nursing care, the goal or purpose of nursing, nursing intervention, and the role of the nurse (Im & Ju Chang, 2012, p. 2) There was a change in focus from nursing education to nursing research during the theory era which was in the mid 1970’s to 1980’s.
