Convention Tourism in Turkey
Abstract
Despite the economical hardship in last decade, convention tourism showed dramatic growth year after year. Convention tourism destinations should own many characteristics, in order to put itself on the convention tourism map and attracts more convention tourists. Turkey is considered to be an important destination for convention tourism, due to its geographical position, historical and cultural richness, touristic infrastructure and the variety of touristic activities. This paper however, was aiming at describing the convention tourism status in Turkey, in order to get to deeper understanding of this industry. This paper, found that the convention tourism is growing rapidly in Turkey and also is concentrated in two cities, which are Istanbul and Antalya for different reasons made them convenient for convention tourism.
1. Introduction
Nowadyas in tourism world people make their travel not only for entertainment or recreation, but also to learn, exchance information, spred their idea and bussnins are another types of activiteis (Çakıcı, 2004:1). In this section I will explain the different development in the tourism industry since the 1960’s and what the effect it has on the travel industry.
As well as providing opportunities to increase direct expenditure at a destination, they can also contribute substantially to a destination’s range of tourist attractions, facilitate media coverage for the destination, promote awareness of the destination for future visitation and lead to the construction of new facilities and infrastructure. The prominence given to special events by governments and tourism marketing organisations has resulted in some destinations seeking to specialise in the creation and hosting of special events. There is also a trend towards the construction of ‘mega-venues’ catering for conventions, trade shows, art and sporting events.
Over the last 60 years, tourism has benefited from continuous growth and diversification, becoming one of the largest as well as the fastest growing world’s economic sectors. Tourism becomes one of the major categories of global trade in services. The Tourism and Hospitality Industry is one of the largest industries in the country. This industry is one of the key front-line players which contributes greatly to the growth of the economy of a country. They are the vital source of income for both government and private sectors. People often mistaken that the duty of the profession in the tourism and hospitality to be somewhat similar, that is to serve clients but in fact, there is actually a vast difference between the roles of a tour guide, travel tour manager and travel agency manager.
