In October, 2015, I went to Hong Kong to take my SAT test and then I was assigned to World Asian Exposition, one of the SAT test centers. There are approximately seven thousand and five hundreds of students (ninety percent of them came from mainland of China) took SAT test at the Asia-World Expo at that same day. Because Asia-World Expo is just one of test centers in Hong Kong, and Hong Kong is just one of cities which have SAT test centers in Asia, so the real number of Chinese students who want to study in USA via completing SAT tests is obviously huge. In terms of the current situation on China, with knowing the importance of higher education and having aware of the benefits of involving different kinds of cultures, more and more …show more content…
However, with the great development of human cultures, Chinese people started to aware the importance of taking higher education, because highly educated people usually can be less anxious and more resourceful than people with little educations when they solve problems on works and life. So, in some companies, they only recruit employees with master or higher degree in some certain positions. In order to make children to be more competitive when they apply for jobs in the future, Chinese parents are not satisfied by sending their children to good Chinese universities such as Tsinghua University and Beijing University anymore, and hence they plan to send their children to universities on other countries. Those Chinese parent think studying abroad can make their children to leave from their comfort zones to be more independent and learn a lot of knowledges which cannot be learned in Chinese universities. (Boerxiusidemuyang, 2016).
U.S.A is one of countries where Chinese choose to study in. In 2015, the number of Chinese international students in U.S.A raised to 328,547 which make up thirty and half of one percent of international students in the U.S.A. (Institute of international Education, 2015). Chinese students are attracted by free education styles and diversity of cultures in American universities. I studied at
Most people have a negative misconception about immigrants and they think immigrant don’t have what it takes to become successful in this Country and they have no determination to get a higher education which is not true. Because the younger generation immigrant is determined to become successful which is why immigrants far exceeded other groups when it came to education outcomes compared to 46 percent of native-born whites is L.A. Furthermore, of the Chinese- American college graduates, 22 percent went on to attain graduate degrees. In fact, most of the elite universities, Asian-American make up a disproportionate percentage of the student population. Although they compromise, just 5.5 percent of the American population, Asian- Americans account for just under one-fifth of the entering class at schools such as Harvard, Yale, and Princeton. At University of California, Berkeley, they make up 43 percent of the student body, but they are just 13 percent of the population (Moxley, Par.
Each country has its own kind of education, and education always plays an important role in affecting students’ life and study on many aspects. Having received ten years of education in China and two years of education in the U.S. I would like to compare and contrast a few significant aspects of these two different kinds of educations. Knowing that no two education systems are the same, the differences between American education and Chinese education allow countries to take the essence and discard the dross through learning from each other so as to improve their own current education systems.
The USA and China are one of the largest countries in the world with more than 9.3 million square meters. There are a lot of interesting parallels between China and America. Both China and America emphasize the importance of their national identity and values. Moreover, they both have a strong military presence and the people in these two countries have a great respect for their militaries. However, when I moved from China to America, there are apparent changes in my education before going to college and after going to college, such as the size of class, students’ study stress and teaching styles.
In the United States, every year have more than million international students come to United States and not most students choose San Francisco State University, but Chien-Ya decided to study in here. San Francisco is a high consume cost for international student, especially to Chien-Ya because every semester she need to pay for the hugeness tuition, rent monthly, and necessities of life. But she still choose San Francisco because she love how San Francisco with clean air and green trees. The purpose for international/foreign students want to attend San Francisco State University because San Francisco is a beautiful city with many famous locals and residents are passionately to welcome outsider.
The history of Chinese students studying in American universities dates back to the mid-1850s, when the first student, Yung Wing, graduated from Yale University in 1854 (Bartlett and Fischer Para. 8). After that. Qin Dynasty starts sending Chinese students to learned new sciences and technologies and we called “Westernization Movement”. The educational missions to the US were organized in the 1870s to train specialists who would create “better engines and iron hulls” for Chinese ships (Bartlett and Fischer Para. 8). The 1870s mission involved about 120 students, who were sponsored to study at the United States’ top universities. Since the 1870s, the number of Chinese students in American colleges has grown exponentially to become the largest population of foreign students in the US (Institute of International Education [IIE] 7). After the Qing court’s resistance to reform and by China’s weakness, Sun Yat-Sen led a revolutionary military uprising. During the regime changing time, people really didn’t know what democracy is. Therefore, more and more students chose to study abroad to learn about the western political system. Chinese students travel to the US to pursue a degree in Western colleges, which they consider to be among the best learning institutions in the world.
Meanwhile, with the process of internationalization, education has already become “an internationally traded commodity” (Altbach, as cited in Nie, 2005, p. 2). As a country with a superior reputation in education, Canada is one of the best choices for international students to further their education. According to Citizenship and Immigration Canada (2013), in 2010, there were 217,882 international students studying in various educational institutions in Canada. In 2013, this number surged to 293,503, and students from China constituted a large part of this group. This is a win-win situation, as the Canadian government is benefiting economically, and simultaneously, the needs of Chinese students who are interested in receiving quality education can be fulfilled. To help these students acquire the English proficiency that scaffolds their academic learning in school, most Canadian
The differences between the Chinese education and the American education are more obvious in people’s mind, not only to the international students, but also to the native students and some people who study on this. As more and more Chinese students come to America to have better education, we should think about why the American education system is better and how could we change our system to have a new education system in China. These differences have some deeply reason, like the American is the nation which loves freedom. It took long time to make such a big difference between the two education systems, and we need longer time to change it. An undeniable
The main cultural strength for the Chinese culture with regards to education is the community’s Confucian beliefs, values, and practices. Due to these values, the Chinese community holds education in high regards. It is perceived as one of the most important factors in life. The Chinese believe that having a good education is not only essential, but that it will also increases the chances of success in one’s life (Chen, & Uttal, 1988). Through education, the people believe that they attain academic knowledge, career and life success, and professional knowledge which are crucial in changing the family’s social status. The parent’s take it as their primary responsibility to facilitate the learning of their children irrespective of whether it is academic or non-academic.
The limited number of existing universities is exceeded by applications, causing competition. This competitiveness causes pressure on both students and parents. As a consequence, most of students in China prepare this examination at an early age (Davey & Higgins, 2007).
In 2014, about 7.26 million new Chinese undergraduates were produced, which is more than 7 times the number 15 years ago (Sharma, 2014, p.2). Besides, “China is making a $250 billion-a-year investment in what economists call human capital” ( Brandisher, 2013, p. 1). Specifically, the Chinese government has spent a huge amount of money and energy in expanding higher education to improve the current system, and to provide a broadly educated public. However, the alarming rise in the number of new undergraduates has sparked a hot debate -- will the effort pay off ? Many researchers argue that these investment has led to undergraduates boom directly, and has resulted in high unemployment among new undergraduates. For illustration, the unemployment rate among Chinese new undergraduates six months after leaving university is officially around 15%” (Sharma, 2014, p.2). After witnessed such cruel fact, the whole society even some scholars has started to blame the government. Admittedly, the government should take some responsibilities for the boom. However, the number of undergraduates was constantly increasing before these investments, and education is more than just policies. Education is closely connected to cultures as well, so many other cultural factors may also impact on people’s choices. Hence, it is unfair for the government to take all the responsibilities for the undergraduates boom, and it is vital to find all the causes and correct them. Comprehensively, the
When the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development(OCED)released its PISA results, a triennial exam taken by half a million 15-year-old students from 65 countries, it showed that Chinese students, particularly those from the areas around Shanghai, topped the scoreboard, while Canada ranked the 13th. (Kaiman) This proves that Chinese students are the most successful at academic studies and achieving exceptional marks. This also proves that “children of Chinese heritage perform better than most of their Western
In recent years, with the rapid development of China’s economy and the high pace of globalization, more and more Chinese want to pursue their overseas study. Some of Chinese and overseas Chinese who have already got the passport or green card of foreign countries or the right of residence in the foreign countries return to China working or settling. The number of returnee is increasing with the development of China’s economy and they are playing an important role in the development of social economy.
Hong Kong and Singapore also have been the next education destinations for international students thanks to the effort of government on education reformation (Economist, 2006). The “mega-markets” of China and India are also moving quickly to build their own domestic education systems to encourage more of their citizens to study at home (Boehm, Davis, Meares & Pearce, 2002).
Golden sunlight shines through the clear sky, casts a sharp bright reflection on the top of the mountains in distanced. The air is tingled up with the sweet smell of summer orange blossom, and with mountain lined up in one direction, the ocean in the other. The horizon of the blue ocean stretches far and gently vanished little by little, and then finally kisses the skyline. Peer out from the hills over the ocean coast, those palm trees grown tall into the sky, swaying their branches in the breezes, which look like they are long-necked, shaggy-haired giraffes dancing with delight. California --- a Golden State that portrayed as a larger-than-life coast paradise where anything can be possible. In addition with the long history of connection of Chinese culture since the Gold Rush, especially with two China Towns in the nation, California is absolutely one of the top states for Chinese students come and study. According to Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles County has one of the largest Chinese student populations in the U.S. with a total number of more than 4000 students. However, it’s not California only, but the whole United States is having more and more Chinese students. Over the past decade, America is attracting a massive group of Chinese coming and studying in the states, in which the number showed a dramatic increase.
As of U.S students must at least be 16 to 18 years of age by state law before dropping out of school. So therefore, the United States educational standards are not as high as Chinas’. As stated in an online article, “While in America attending high school is a right, in China children are required to test into their preferred high schools. Students can attempt to obtain higher education by passing entrance exams, which asks questions from a multitude of subjects and uses the final scores to rank and file students to different institutions.” (Fang, 2016) On one hand, going to school in America for some students is a joke. On the other hand, students in China are set to achieve their maximum educational skills at a very young age. Chinas’ students are taught manners before they are taught anything at the start of their education and that implies a very good background on Chinas’ educative systematics. For one thing, students in the U.S do not take education seriously and that is the U.S Governments’ fault because it is all due to the “No Child Left Behind Act”. This oppresses the children’s values as students because they are put to very low educational standards. Other countries, have students who are very intellectual but since their Government does not back up their education the children’s futures are simply thrown away in a way.
