Before the telephone was invented, people struggled to communicate in many ways. They usually sent letters, although it took forever to send just one. Some used fire to communicate and sent out smoke signals. Others sent messages from hilltop to hilltop by raising or bringing down a semaphore towers arms. Also, lanterns were used to flash out a message in a code called Morse code. Morse code was sent by wires through the telegraph, but you had to know how to interpret the code in order to use it. Although people were excited about this new way of communication, there were some negative aspects of the telephone. First, when the telephone first came out, people were worried that other people could hear or listen into their discussions. Once in awhile, this actually occurred on party lines where more than one family shared a telephone line. Also, operators in small communities sometimes listened in on discussions because they were nosey. Second, there were some environmental concerns with the telephone. For example, telephone poles with hundreds of wires got to be normal in large communities …show more content…
First, it gave people more information. Before the telephone, information had to come to people from books and the daily paper. People also had to depend on other people's memories and travel patterns. Now, people could find out about new news anytime, just by grabbing their phone and dialing a number. Second, the telephone could now be used for emergency services. In fact, the first telephone call was Alexander Graham Bell calling his assistant to ask for help. Lastly, the telephone helped people connect with each other more. Companies promoted the telephone to many organizations to increase efficiency, spare time, and have their customers in awe. A handbook for telephone salesmen from 1904 recommends for customers to get a telephone by giving them these
Although the telephone became a necessity of daily life, it was at first neglected by the public. People thought the telephone was a fake and a mere toy. Although the telephone was a powerful innovation, nobody took it seriously.
Phones can cause secrecy and gossip, proven by a personal anecdote by an amish man. “When the telephone first came out here, people put them in their homes," explained Moses. "But they were party lines. One time a woman overheard two other women gossiping about her.” In retaliation, the victim of the gossip objected to these party lines and requested the banning of phones in their community. The bishops saw that it was hurting more than helping the Amish community, and so it was banned. This happens in the English internet-filled world, only people just seem to get mad at this instead of trying to fix the problem. Gossip and
It would take days or months before a message was sent to a relative, a dear friend, a fellow business associate and a medical personnel. These mails would be sent by foot as “the earliest postal systems were often run by a local citizen out of his house. Postal carriers travelled by horse and would usually only carry documents” (Communication and Transportation, n.d.). Other methods of communicating during the 1800s, apart from paper and pencil were by newspapers and storytelling (1800’s Transportation & Technology, n.d.). Storytelling was seen as an important and vital part of history as very few people had the ability to read and write. Before the telegraph, communicating over long distances was usually only done during anytime the weather was good, as travelling and using flares to send messages were not the safest or the most appropriate during bad weather. As mentioned by Jo (2011) during our primitive and prehistoric ages, people developed some form of “wireless” networks which were used over long distances. These almost ancient methods used smoke signals, flashing mirrors, signal flares, torch signalling and
The main need it fulfills is instant communication. Whether it be a phone call, a text message, or even video chat, telephones have the ability to let the user communicate with anyone around the world instantaneously, which is an amazing feature. Telephones are also able to fulfill the need for entertainment. When using smartphones, consumers have the option to listen to music, play games, watch movies/TV shows, and access social media. Sine phones are able to provide the consumer with all these different types of entertainment, it eliminates the need for consumers to have multiple sources of entertainment, because all these forms of entertainment are on a phone (i.e no need for an iPod to listen to music to, because you can download music onto your phone). Another need a phone can fulfill, is the need for a camera. Instead of carrying a bulky camera wherever you go, consumers can just bring their mobile phone with them, and take pictures and videos. This is very convenient because it reduces the amount of items you need to carry with you. It also eliminates the process of downloading your pictures onto a computer to view them, because instead you can view them right on the spot. The phone also fulfills the need for an alarm clock, a map, a compass and a calculator. It also is able to keep track of your health, gives you current news updates, and you are able to keep track of different stocks. These features
Cell phones have changed since I was young. Cell phones have changed in numerous ways. One way that cell phones have changed is that they used to be a big, black, and heavy. They used to have a lot of wires. Now, cell phones have been invented wireless and smaller. Another way that cell phones have changed is that today young folks have 24-hour towers instead of operators. We had operators to come connect the wires. When the operators went home, we would have to meet people in person. A telephone should be used wisely and gave the most highest respect.
Before the invention of the telegraph in 1844 by Samuel Morse and his colleagues, news and messages traveled at a much more laborious and protracted rate. While businesses and individuals could communicate by interpersonal communication through
Similar to the telegraph, the invention of the telephone made instant communication a possibility. Far more effective than the telegraph, the phone allowed for the spread of more information over a shorter period. Writing was no longer the only form of long distance communication. Telephones encouraged the progress of city centers and office buildings. The importance of messengers and telegraphs dwindled as the telephone industry expanded. By the early 21st century, constant connection to the entire planet through cell phones was an American standard.
At that time, cell phones were to be too big to carry around and usually installed into the automobile for use. Approximately 10 years later, in 1983, Motorola came out with the DynaTAC 8000x. When it arrived in the market, it was considered to be the first cell phone small enough to carry(Ray). This began the trend of carrying our little phone device everywhere and having the world at our fingertips. This is why we take our phones with us everywhere and has lead to our societies seemly addiction to them. Since phones are a perfect pocket size we can take them anywhere. Cell phones began to become more and more popular by making appearances on television commercials, and television shows like Saved By The Bell. The advertisements encouraged this addiction and need to focus on the device to get by world. An addiction that many crave and can not go without. Cell phones began with a talking feature and slowly would graduate into other features such as voicemails(Ray). To go on and becoming our source of all things electronic. Cell phones can be used to take pictures, search the web, make calls, and even watch television. These cell phone features have replace other electronic we use to need to carry such as a camera, computer, or a even TV This easy access has lead to people becoming easily distracted to a point that harm has resulted. So think about all the things cell phones can do today, how this has changed from their first intentions, since they were
A few centuries ago, there were only a few kinds of communication that people can use. They could speak to each other, they can use smoke as a means of communication to send their message from one place to another or they could use mail. Later on, they also had telegram. During the modern age, telephone is one of the most important inventions in the field of communications. It is a disruptive technology that had made other means of communication become obsolete. Nowadays, it has played an irreplaceable role in our
Phones help society move forward in technology, but also have made America very inefficient as well. Communication might be easier to achieve , but in reality phones have gone way past communicating. Phones have things to distract us now like games, movies, apps, etc, that keep us infatuated with these devices. These electronic devices have created collateral damage to society with the distractions
The telephone that we know today is completely different from the one of the past. Today we can individually press each number quickly to call someone. We can even call someone through the computer without the person actually owning a phone. The telephone of the past had the numbers on a curricular disc. This design made forced you to tediously move each number to a specific
Cell phones, as we know them haven’t been around for that long. The quick progression of the item and development has enormously influenced the regular daily existence in the general public eye today. It 's implementation has been genuinely quick considering that mobile phones were inexistent a quarter century ago. The first phone was made by Alexander Graham Bell. According to an article, ' 'This brought upon a major change in communication and gave leeway to the improvement of the telephone in the days to come ' '(Bellis, 2013b).
Life during the late 1800’s through the 1900’s was pretty much the same thing, when it came to communication. If you wanted to “get ahold” or communicate with someone that was not within walking distance you would follow these three simple steps: First you would walk over to the nearest landline phone. Depending on if no one else in the household was currently using it, would determine if you would be able to talk to who you wanted. Next you would pick up the phone and begin dialing. This could be as easy as pushing the numbers or as difficult as putting your finger in a hold on a rotating piece of plastic, spinning it all the way around and then repeating that process 10 times. The road you took to dialing depended mainly on how old
Since the beginning of time, people have always been looking for means of communication, but a way to communicate in a fast and easy way. In earlier times, Egyptians carved on rocks, leaving records for the next civilization. The Incans of South America knotted several colored pieces of string in a specific pattern and had a messenger run to the next village to deliver it. Many wrote messages on paper to be delivered by a messenger and some simply sent a messenger to deliver the message orally. Of course, there were many problems with these means of communication. If one just sent a messenger, it was easy for the messenger to lose communication in the traveling process, or one could misplace a written message. And of course these messages
Since the beginning of the industrial revolution, the world has become a smaller place. The time used to travel to far distances has diminished; with the growth of new technologies, traveling and communicating have become simple daily tasks for many people. Through the growth of global communication, people have become closer to others across the globe, and business has gone world wide. One invention that came along with the technological revolution is the cell phone. Cell phones allow us to be reachable anywhere at anytime, letting us communicate even during travel. As time becomes more valuable for people, the importance of accessibility to communication also increases. With cell phones, the communication and
