In this modern world, learning a new language is a huge endeavor in a person’s life. In order for someone to learn a new language, it is necessary for them to learn the language structure, its phonemes, facial expressions, word collocations, and other detail aspects related to learning a language. When communicating with someone that can fluently speak the language you are trying to learn, talking to them may be a challenge because it takes awhile for someone who is foreign with the language to find the right words to properly express the message you are trying to convey. When learning the English language, I usually focus on learning words through images and books. I hardly ever translate the words to or from my language because …show more content…
Most establishments, street signs, and just about what I see around the city use English as the official language and this makes it easier for me to learn and remember English. Also, in order for us to be promoted to the next grade level, we need to pass English class and use English as the primary language in all classes. We only use Filipino as a secondary language in school.
Speaking a different language with a different word structures and accent makes learning and speaking English quite challenging at first. For instance, English puts the adjective before a noun whereas most other languages in the world put it after the noun. English has so many idioms and expressions that it makes quite confusing to learn. We usually don’t speak English with friends and at home back there and because of this; it can get more problematic to retain what was previously learned because of lack of exposure.
I was fortunate enough to go to private school because I don’t think a public school in my previous country would have the same English academic standards as the classes found in private schools. I took an English class since kindergarten because of it being the universal language and I thought that it might be helpful for me to learn especially in business and when watching American television shows and Hollywood movies, where the English language is predominantly used.
I realized that starting to learn a new language at a young age was a great idea because if I
There are many reasons for learning English. We need to learn English for both our social and academic lives. We live in the United
Foreign language classes are often put off until high school due to the fact that this is when people believe students are most ready to learn another language. This belief is widely accepted despite the fact children are able to learn to speak like natives in foreign languages, whereas teenagers and adults usually are not able to learn how to do this. Speaking “like a native” entails being able to think in a foreign language without having to translate (Nadia 1). The ability to speak like a native in a foreign language can be easier to obtain when taught the foreign language during elementary school. Once a student passes the prime learning stages, learning a foreign language can be extremely difficult. Adults starting to learn a language have to work through an established first-language
By many researchers, it has been hypothesized that language could be acquired only within a critical period, which is from early infancy to puberty. If this is true, this should be extended to second language acquisition as well, and, if so, young children should be better at acquiring the second language than adults, and younger children should reach higher levels of proficiency in the second language. If this prediction is true, it would importantly demonstrate that children should be exposed to language with rich vocabulary and grammar within the critical period, and foreign language exposure at school should take place in early grades in order to maximize their opportunity to learn the language effectively. However, the motivation and the purpose of learning the target language may differ depending on the individuals and those factors can limit or expand the exposure to the target language. In this paper, I would like to discuss the correlation between the age that bilingual individuals are exposed to the second language as well as their motivation, purpose, and value of learning the second language. I would like to suggest that regardless of the age that individuals are exposed to the second language, if one values the importance of learning the second language and maximize their exposure to the targeted language, they can reach to the native level of proficiency in that language.
Language is the primary way to communicate, learn and express identity. Some language learners are successful by virtue of their sheer determination, hard work and diligence. However, there are other crucial factors influencing success that are largely beyond the control of learners. ' 'Second language is any language other than the learner 's native language or mother tongue ' '(Mitchell pg 5). To be successful in second language acquisition, there are various factors which act as barrier in the process of learning English as a second language.
Learning any language can always be tricky depending on how you’re taught. Sofia created a video showing that learning a language at a young age is an effective way to become fluent. Sofia started the video by introducing us to her family and expressing to us that she comes from a cultural family who's primary language is Spanish. She also showed us how she and her brothers learned English in various ways that fit each of their needs. As the video came to a close she showed the effectiveness of these specific learning habits they were introduced to, which lead to there fluency in the English language.
A fundamental goal of learning a foreign language is to communicate. Today, the need of interacting in English effectively, is increasing. This is needed to be able to interact with both native and non-native speakers. A reason can be the diversity in populations which is growing because of migration and many adult learners study English because they need it in workplace settings, where they communicate with English-speaking colleagues or just for English environment. These learners would benefit from a wide repertoire of the learning language to communicate meaningfully.
Like any average person, I’ve accomplished many things in my life from learning how to walk to learning algebra in the eighth grade. However one of my greatest accomplishments has always been learning a new language. When I was eight years old, my family and I moved to the United States from Mexico. Naturally, I was very excited and eager to experience something new but because of the major differences, the move to a new country with a different language proved to be more difficult than I originally thought.
Learning a new language always brings with it many issues, but mainly when this one it is not very usual in your environment. I am from the Dominican Republic, a country located in the Caribbean which is visited by a big amount of tourist the whole year. The English Language is very useful due to it allows the people to communicate with all the visitors in all the tourist areas and through all the country, however I live in a non tourist area and a new language learning it's not easy to perform.
What I experienced in speaking 7 different languages is that there are certain things that are just untranslatable between languages. In order to convey the same thought or message in different languages, I can’t directly translate word to word instead I have to use words that are appropriate in
Growing up, the English language comes naturally to most; especially to those who are American born. However, English for me was a struggle to accomplish. In addition to learning Chinese, I also learned English while growing up. While in a household where my parents did not speak English fluently, I was not able to receive proper grammar instruction from them. Which came naturally to most American kids. But in my mind, I would always think how I could not pronounce the simple works like my other classmates. I knew that I had to work hard because my parents worked so hard to come to America as refuges because they wanted their future children to have a good life. Unlike most American kids who had parents to help them with reading and homework;
Learning a foreign language can help with skills in the english language. Learning foreign languages also helps promote cultural awareness. Learning foreign languages at a younger age can help with development of the language as well. All in all, learning a foreign language at a young age is a good idea. U.S. grade school children should be required to learn a foreign language.
Knowing a second language isn’t always a wonderful thing. Though my parents had as a supreme goal of their lives to teach me a language that I will probably never use again, I never liked being seen as the guy who also speaks another language. I am not saying that knowing a second language doesn’t have its perks, but it’s all the other things that made me want to erase it from my brain forever. I never liked it and I found it totally painful every time when my parents used me as a portable translator, every time when I had to meet with my relatives during holidays who don’t know any English, and every time I found myself being around people that were speaking this language, and they were speaking it just to bash the people around them who were not understanding a single word.
engage in learning the new language? In the next few paragraphs I will be talking about my own
I had my first English lesson in fourth grade. My teacher changed in fifth grade. Almost every year after the elementary school my teacher was someone else too. They taught me the basic thing such as the numbers, alphabet, colours, days, months, seasons, a brief introduction to the grammar, and introducing myself. My teachers did not teach me the distinctive English sounds compared to my mother tongue, which is unfortunate. The middle school was three years. I had English lessons in every one of them. I had two different teachers. They started to teach me grammar and how to fill in the blanks, not metaphorically. Although they taught me something totally artificial, the real language has been alive for years and it will be alive until it is extinct, which is unlikely in this case. I also had word lists that I had to write each of them five times to my notebook with their Turkish translation. My teachers would pronounce it like three times during the lesson. I still remember how they used to say “Repeat after me.” The lesson would go on with the same rituals. As a result, many examples of such practises did not get most of my classmates to learn the
Learning a language is one of the most difficult skills that a human can ever learn. Yet, it is also one of the most critical skills that everyone must develop to properly live in a civilized society. Learning a second language such as English is no different, except that it is for the great benefit of having the opportunity to be eligible for many more jobs inside and outside the birth country. Naturally, it is why developing English skills is the landmark goal that majority of people want to strive for. In my experience of developing my English skills, there are many things that I encounter as part of my development. The aspects throughout my English skill’s development include how I developed the skills, the big hurdles hindering my mastery,
