More than most would imagine, illiteracy is a phenomenal crisis throughout the world. Today, there are approximately 800 million illiterates in the world. Ninety-three million of those are Americans who have basic or below basic literacy. Thirty million of the 93,000,000 are functionally illiterate. The other 63,000,000 read at a fifth to an eighth grade level and cannot understand a basic newspaper. Another way modernization is illustrated in India is through agriculture and industry, notwithstanding the effects it had on Indians. Industry guided India to a much stronger economy, arguably guiding them to holding a spot in the top ten economies in the world (O.I). Irrigation cultivated approximately 30 million acres, awarding the country great agricultural wealth. Along with wealth also came a disappearance of the famines in India. Collectively, the country of India as a whole benefited from this modernization as it set a higher standard of living for the population.

It became evident that the British could maintain the empire only at enormous cost. At the end of the Second World War, they saw the writing on the wall, and initiated a number of constitutional moves to effect the transfer of power to the sovereign State of India. For the first and perhaps the only time in history, the power of a mighty global empire 'on which the sun never set', had been challenged and overcome by the moral might of a people armed only with ideals and courage.

In Asian areas, India was prominent to serve economic balance and independence. Mahatma Gandhi believed that with economic independence, India would be have an uplift within every individual. Mahatma Ghandi spoke that their decolonization must not imitate the wrong, for example, the Nazi rule in Germany or the ones in Britian. The British took over and surrounded over one quarter of the world’s population. India was one of those country that was taken over and it was considered the “Jewel in the Crown”. At first India and Britain were connected by the British East India Company for trading. Once India started getting weak and falling apart, Britain took advantage of this and took complete political, economic, and social control. Britain’s administration for India was useful, creating transportation all over the country, and sending Indians for better education.

India has become a global conduit for business as they have liberalized their economic policies over the past 20 years.
