Many people think of pollution as the air that we breathe outdoors. Not everyone realizes that the air we breathe indoors is much more polluted. There are pollutants in the atmosphere that have reached a level that is causing a threat to the health of individuals. Pollution began in the early times from the gases of molten volcanic activity being released into the atmosphere. Additional pollutants were caused by the combustion of biomass, volatilization of organic compounds, and the release of bio-effluents from living organisms. Pollutants can be caused by the natural movements and actions of the planet itself. Particles can become suspended in the air by abrasive action of surface winds, fires, wave action, and the fracture of …show more content…
A sick building is distinguished from a normal one when the majority of the occupants are suffering from symptoms of sick building syndrome. Sick building syndrome occurs when a building has insufficient ventilation or thermal control, inadequate maintenance of building systems, changes in thermal or contaminant loads, changes in building operation to meet new objectives such as energy conservation and inadequate design of a building for its intended use. Some other contributing factors may include physical, chemical, biological, and psychosocial factors. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) was established by the United Nations to watch the world environmental conditions. They are to alert governments around the world of impending ecological dangers. The governments are to then attempt to avoid these dangers by preventative measures. The UNEP has pointed out to the government that pollution does not respect national boundaries and feels that the atmospheric degradation is causing the increase in illness and deaths among humans; the most susceptible are children and the elderly. Pollutants are emitted into the air nationwide by both natural and manmade pollutants. Emissions from natural resources are caused by living and non-living sources, The emissions that are produced in an area lead to a natural background concentration which varies depending on the local source of the emissions and the
Another big problem in polluting places and things is air pollution which can make air foggy, unbreathable, and toxic. According to “34 Facts about Pollution”, the text states breathing the air in Mumbai, India, for just one day is equivalent to smoking 100 cigarettes. One of the things that can cause air pollution is releasing factory fuels and fossil fuels into the air. We also cause it from burning certain things like plastic, chemicals, and other
Pollution is defined as the process of harmful substances being released into the air. Some of these substances include Carbon Monoxide, Sulphur dioxide, Lead and PM2.5. PM2.5 is small particles which are smaller than 25 thousandths of a millimeter. This polluted air will fill your lungs with tiny particles and cause Lung cancer, Asthma and other heart and lung diseases.
Although thought to be “not a big problem” and “under control” by most people, pollution is making its way in being a serious and an unforgiving threat to society. Pollution a topic everyone hears and knows exists. What they don’t know is how serious of a problem it is already becoming. Many health issues are being reported now that are linked to air pollution and even the most severe weather places have encountered are linked to air pollution also. By society, not fully being aware of the true threat that pollution is making, it will only become a growing threat that they will be encountering.
Pollution is a common place everywhere in the world, the phrase is used for many global issues in various forms. Air pollution is a change in the stratosphere which causes adaption to the air, physical, biological, and chemical gasses. This happens when pollutants released into the air which comes in many different forms such as; gases, smoke, and dusts. The process leads to difficulty for the natural air to breathe because it is contaminated as there are two various forms of air pollution; visible air pollution and invisible air pollution. Some causes and effects of air pollution are; burning of fossil fuels, mining operations, indoor air pollution, agriculture activities, global warming, acid rain, and depletion of Ozone layer to name a few. Air pollution is linked to many health related issues. One location I focused my study on was the health of the Chippewa people in Sarnia Ontario and the documentary film “Toxic Trespass”.
One of the main cause of air pollution is human activities like mining, construction, transportation, industrial work, agriculture, smelting, and some others. There are also natural causes that result to air pollution also such as wild fires, volcano eruptions. These are even rare and for the most part only affect the area that it surrounds. The bigger problem is going back to us humans and knowing that we can stop certain activities to help better the world and our air we breathe every day. One of the “invisible killers” in today’s air pollution includes nitrogen oxides, ozone, and very small particulate matter. (Frank) Today, PM has been researched to be held most responsible for most of the health effects caused by the air. Fossil fuel combustion is most common in more of the urban areas, which would come from the road construction that occurs quite frequently. (Frank) There has also been a rise in deaths from cardiovascular and respiratory disease with older people. (Seaton)
3 The findings by the researchers at UM revealed children with lifetime exposure to air pollutions that are above the current U.S. standards, including fine particulate matter, are at a increased risk for brain inflammation and neurodegenerative changes. This includes Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. Air pollution is monitored by the EPA, as well as national, state, and local organizations. EPA's Office of Air Quality Planning and Standards (OAQPS) is responsible for setting standards for air pollutants that are deemed harmful to people and the surrounding environment. OAPQS require areas that are listed as nonattainment areas to develop plans to meet attainment and correct the level of air pollutions. In the U.S. alone, a staggering 200 million people reside in areas where pollutants such as fine particulate matter and ozone are above the set standards by OAQPS. 3
Air pollution is the result of many human activities- burning fossil fuels, agriculture and industry all contribute to polluting the air we breathe. Human actions are damaging the Earth’s atmosphere; but pollution not only harms the environment, it also damages our health. According to the World Health Organization, 1.2 million deaths each year are caused by air pollution. Because of the risks associated with air pollution, we should all be aware of the pollutants and polluters in our communities.
In today’s industrialized societies, these technological conveniences have become vital in order for one to compete for resources. With this dependency, comes a cost, and it threatens the very system that supports life on earth. In North America, 700,000 tons of air pollution is released into the atmosphere every day (Biology). This stems from the use of fuel-burning transportation, product manufacturing, and mining. There are two main classes of air pollution, particles and gases. The discharge of elements into the
In definition, air pollution is the appearance air pollutant in the air which worsens the quality of air and imperil the health of living organisms, natural resources, and structures and properties (Park, 2016). The sources of air pollution could come from natural sources such as forest fires, and volcanic eruptions, moreover, it could also come from substances that are emitted into the air that resulted from human activities. Human activities could either be accidental or intentional. Some of the accidental human activities
Chemical contaminants from outdoor sources: - Outdoor air that enters the building can also be a cause of indoor pollution. Pollutants from motor vehicle exhausts, building exhausts, and plumbing vents can enter the building through poorly located air intake vents windows and other
Air pollution occurs when the air is contaminated by foreign substances. These substances can be liquid or solid and they are small enough that they remain suspended in the air. Some of the substances can be toxic chemicals which can include sulphur dioxide (SO2), oxides of nitrogen (NOx), ozone (O3), volatile organic compounds and suspended particulate matter (PM).
Air pollution can be described as the contamination of the atmosphere, i.e. presence of artificial and natural substances that impact on the well-being of any living organism. Also, it can be defined as a situation whereby contaminants impact on the artifacts and structures or esthetic sensibilities such as smell or visibility. The majority of the artificial impurities is injected into the air close to the earth’s surface. The
Earth is the only place in the universe that can support human life. It is very important that we realize this fact and take very good care of it. Various human activities cause the destruction of earth. Human beings can live a few days without food and water however humans can last only a few seconds without oxygen. Various human activities lead to the aggravation of the quality of air. Gases produced by human activities mainly due to exploitation of resources and industrialization cause air pollution. Green house gases mainly chlorofluorocarbons; carbon
The major pollution caused by factories or industrials’ activities is air pollution. According to the Engineers’ Joint Council “Air Pollution and Its Control”, air pollution means the presence in the outdoor atmosphere of one or more contaminants, such as dust, fumes, gas, mist, odour, smoke or vapour in quantities of characteristics and of duration, such as to be injurious to human, plant or animal life or to property or which unreasonably interfaces with the comfortable enjoyment of life and property. On the other way, air pollution also can be defined as the chemicals, particulate matters or biological materials that cause harm or discomfort to humans or other living organisms, or damages the natural environment, into
Also, we have a many small and large industries in my city I learnt that during production when carbon monoxide hydrocarbons, organic compounds, chemicals are being released in to the air it causes huge amount of air pollution, thinking about this I now understand why my grandfather never wanted to live in the city he always complains about a large carpet manufacturing company in my city, at the back of the factory is a large pipe that let out smoke from the machine he said it smells bad.
