Industrial Revolution: The Use Of Renewable Energy

Fossil fuels are finite resources and once those are used up we need a way to continue living regularly, as our lives are built upon the ability to harness energy and produce electricity. As technology increases, alternative types of energy have become more and more enticing. Renewable energy is a very controversial topic today and has been around since the industrial revolution. Prior to the Revolution, which started in Britain in the late 1700s, manufacturing products was often done through the use of hand tools or basic machines in people’s homes. From the 18th to 19th centuries industrialization marked a shift to powered, specialty machinery, factories and mass production, all of which are used today to help with the processing of renewables.

Society has become more and more reliant of technology as the years have gone past. From the early days, approximated 1.5 million years ago, to today, there has been a significant change on the main sources of domestic energy. One and a half million years ago the main source of energy was sunlight to keep warm and then it progressed to burning wood with friction for fire for cooking. Approximately 6000 BCE, domesticated animals were used to lift heavy items, to transport people, pull ploughs and turn large grindstone to make flour. Fossil fuels have been essential in the development of most industrial nations, there are a few realities of using them that these societies needs to come to terms with and they are most importantly the fact that these fossil fuels are finite and that they are detrimental to the health of our planet. With the growing need for our planet to steer away from the burning of fossil fuels, it has become inherent that we are very reliant on the burning of them to supply our energy demand, so much that it has become a daunting task to steer away from these fossil fuels and transforming to more environmentally friendly renewable energy sources.

In our environment, there are many concerns on how to make the world a better place to live. One of the biggest issues is our energy and power resources. Green energy is renewable energy that is environmental friendly, and forms of green energy include geothermal, hydropower, solar, and wind energy. Nonrenewable resources, as the name implies, are resources for which there is a limited supply, and forms of nonrenewable resources include fossil fuels and nuclear energy. Much of our world is using fossil fuels, but in the process of achieving everyday needs, we are destroying our environment. In my opinion, people should cut down on the usage of fossil fuels and depend more on green energy. This will stop thousands of harmful pollutants and toxics from entering our atmosphere in the form of CO2.

Since the industrial revolution began, humans have doubled their consumption rates almost every decade. The worlds natural resources have been on a steady decline for many years and a frequently asked question is “what’s next?”. Professor David MacKay explains how he thinks society can give answers to these questions of what is next after the natural resources dry up. MacKay is a professor of Natural Philosophy at the University of Cambridge, and chief Advisor of the U.K. Department of Energy and Climate Change. MacKay has elaborated in several ways how countries around the world have increased consumption more in the past 15 years than ever before in recorded history. There are many factors that could effect the future of our energy crisis, including the increase of renewable power sources, slowing down on energy consumption, and the development of new technologies to power the forever growing world.

Starting small I wanted to explain what fossil fuels are exactly. Also how they are non- renewable, meaning that they indeed will run out one day, and there is no way how to replenish the supply after it is gone. Fossil fuels are natural fuels such as coal or gas, these fuels formed in the geological past from the remains of microscopic plants and ancient animals like dinosaurs that lived and died millions of years ago. The plants and animals or (diatoms) absorbed energy that came from the biggest star in our universe, this star is the sun. Energy from the sun transferred over and was stored into carbon molecules in the bodies of the plants and animals. As millions of years passed by, the dead bodies of the plants and animals were covered by thick layers of bacteria. The bacterial layers formed new plants from the remains of microscopic plants and animals to make organic materials. The deeper they were inside the earth the more pressure and heat began to rise and depending on the amount of pressure and heat formed these different fossil fuels. The fossil fuels that were formed unfortunately were only a finite amount. Because there is only a finite amount there will not be any more of these fuels after all are used. It is controversial to society because we run our everyday life with a dependence on fossil fuels.

Fossil Fuels such us oil, coal, and natural gas are currently the world’s primary energy resources because they originate from living things. Formed millions of years ago from the decomposition of organic materials such as plants and animal life, it is non-renewable resources that supplied U.S. and global economic development over the past century. In fact, Fossil fuel industries mine or drill for this energy resources, burn them to provide electricity. Natural gas and oil are used when it comes to heating and cooling. Oil is predominantly and most important resource responsible for transportation fuel and generate heat. However, there are several negative issues that come along with using fossil fuels for energy. Fossil fuels are not a renewable source, and the burning of fossil fuels causes pollution, just to name a few. These negative factors are felt globally as every person on Earth has a need for energy and will be impacted by global climate changes. Because of these reason we should be concentrating our efforts on using and perfecting other sources for our energy.

Global warming has taken a significant toll on the environment and heath of human and animals. The use of non-renewable fossil fuels such as natural gas, coal, crude oil, tar sands and oil shales are finite resources on the planet and will one day run out because they are regularly used. Subsequent pressure and heating while being buried consisting of organic matter and dead plant over millions of years are what created these fossil fuels. Burning fossil fuels form greenhouse gases from carbon dioxide, acid rain from sulfur dioxide, and photochemical pollution from nitrous oxides. The use of renewable energy is cleaner and safer for the environment and promotes investments. Some examples of renewable energy are Solar, Wind, and Hydro. Renewable energy is any energy that does not intake limited resources of the Earth and can be conveniently and instantly restored.

The Earth is slowly dying and we can save it, however, it requires some initiative. Global warming, or climate change, is a very real problem that may soon wipe out the Earth’s resources. Some of which include necessary items such as natural foods and water. This problem doesn’t just happen in some third-world country no one has heard of. This is happening right in our own back yards. This problem has a very simple solution: conserve energy, cut down on Carbon Dioxide emissions, and focus on developing technology that utilizes clean renewable energies.

Electricity is part of our daily lives, which makes our lives easier since it has been discovered, but nobody thought about the dangerous consequences we will face, now and in the future. In addition, most people do not know how electricity is produced; they just know how to consume it. Burning coal in giant boilers to generate steam that produces electricity and power other industries. However, the side effects of the use of coal to process energy have caused massive damage to Mother Nature and our environment that is escalating to the next level.
