GENERAL GOAL: To inform.

SPECIFIC GOAL: At the end of my speech the audience will be able to know how to identify and manage different types of anxiety.

CENTRAL IDEA: Anxiety comes in many forms, but the most important aspect of it is being able to identify and manage it.

INTRODUCTION

I. ATTENTION GETTER: Deviance. Distress. Dysfunctional. These are the three D’s for identifying psychological disorders. At least a fifth of all people will experience a diagnosable anxiety disorder of some kind at some point in their lives. Meaning, about 20% of people in this room suffer from anxiety, or will suffer, even if it goes undiagnosed.

TRANSITION: General anxiety disorder targets everyday events, but social phobia, or social anxiety, targets anxieties towards social settings.

II. The American Psychological Association explains social phobia as feeling nervous while spending time in social settings, feeling self-conscious in front of others, and worrying about being rejected by or offending others.

A. Other common symptoms, as explained on the website, include having a hard time making friends, avoiding social situations, and worrying for days about social events.
