Innovation and Change – Nursing Name Institution The need for innovation in medical care becomes a priority in a growing world, with the world population growing at an alarming rate, from 3.036 Billion to 7.125 Billion in just half a century from 1960 to 2013. The rapid increase in population has translated to congestion in urban centers leading to enormous waste production; a lot of pollution made due to excessive fumes from vehicles on roads and even water pollution due to a rapid increase in industrial activities in the quest to satisfy production. All these effects are increasingly resulting to higher frequency within which people acquire infections leading to the need for specialized medical care. Introduction Change Planned In order to eliminate the inefficiencies witnessed in many public and private hospitals that serve a number of patients, an integrated approach to handling the daily workload is necessary. There is need for all departments within the hospital to work closely together in ensuring more effective and efficient service deliveries. In this paper, a planned change is going to be carried out involving designing a new system that incorporates all the departments within the hospital. The facility my change project has potential impact upon is a teaching hospital which is known for promoting, supporting, and encouraging clinical research and implementing latest evidence-based practice. I have always viewed nurses as caring and compassionate towards their patents. There is a quality in their personalities in that they truly care about who they are working with. Nurses are also ones who can be trusted, as you know that they regard their job to the highest degree. Over the years, new developments in technology have led to advances in medicine and health. The great strides that have been made over the years have helped improve the lives of individuals and have led to a better environment.
My assumptions for nursing before walking into this course were that this profession focused on quality care for all different types of patients. I viewed nurses as someone who is brave, courageous, always up for a challenge, and compassionate. When I made my career choice to become a nurse, I thought their main jobs were to spend time with the patients, help them feel comfortable, provide them with medication that was ordered by their physician, and help patients with day to day tasks. I looked at nurses as someone who is like a close family member – specifically a mother. They provide you with all of the love and care that a mother can provide. My impression of nursing was that nurses were given a plan of treatment ordered by the physician
In the profession of Nursing, we are faced with different challenges daily. Some of the most common problem that we faced today are patient workloads, unit dynamics, new interns, difficult family members, and patient safety. I believe the most significant difficulty nurses faces today is the nurse-patient ratio. In New York, we currently do not have a legislation that sets the number of patients assigned to a nurse. The ratio is set by the administrators and nursing managers of different units. In California on the other hand; legislation has been passed in 1999 and revised on 2008 that sets the cap of nurse-patient ratio in a Medical Surgical Floor at 1:5 (Kasprak, 2004). Currently in my unit, the nurse-patient ration ranges between 1:6 to 1:8, ratios that render care that is not safe for the patient and nurses; which can result to negative patient outcomes. Meeting the needs of each patient in a 1:6 ratio is both difficult and unfair for the patient, it makes me feel that I am ignoring patients need. The Transitions Theory by Afaf Meleis which is a middle range theory and Human Needs Theory by Abraham Maslow a which is a Humanistic Theory both supports the need for regulation of Nurse-Patient ratio in New York.
Whether you have been practicing for many years or are just beginning your nursing career, you can see that the face of nursing is in transition. Due to rapidly advancing technology, greater autonomy within our field and healthcare reform, many changes are ahead for our profession. These changes are seen in every arena of nursing, whether that is in the hospital, long term care, non-profit or nurse-managed health clinics and give us a peek at what the future of nursing will be like. Patient care is evolving and nurses require a higher skill set to effectively treat such a diverse population (Models, 2010). In response to this need, educational institutes are encouraged to modify and expand loan forgiveness programs and increase the number of grants awarded to nurses furthering their education. The skills that were once needed for new nurses have dramatically changed over the past few years. We must do everything in our power to ensure new nurses are prepared to enter the workforce capable of handling their immense responsibilities (Hendren, 2010). The projected nursing shortage will severely impact patients across the United States and law makers are scrambling to find a solution to the problem. As I started by Bachelors of Science Nursing (BSN) program, I was very apprehensive about things that I was going to learn. I felt that I was already a very good nurse, and that obtaining my BSN was just paperwork. Little did I know how much I would learn in the first class, Nursing Transitions, at Viterbo University. I have learned that obtaining my BSN will enhance not only my educational experience, but will make me more holistic, enhance my communication styles, and strengthen my ability to do research more readily.
