An insulin injection is used to control blood sugar in people who have type 1 or type 2 diabetes when the body lacks insulin production. Type 1 diabetes is when the body does not make insulin and cannot control the amount of sugar in the blood. Type 2 diabetes is when the body cannot produce or use insulin normally to lower the high blood sugar level. Insulin cannot be taken by mouth because it is a protein. The acid in the stomach would digest the insulin. An insulin injection stops the pancreas from producing more sugar and helps move the excess sugar from the blood to other body tissues where they can be used for energy. More than one type of insulin may be injected and is usually injected several times a day. Even though insulin helps …show more content…
Two of the main types of over the counter drugs are acetaminophen (Tylenol) and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (also called ibuprofen and is found in Advil or Motrin). They both deliver the same relief even though they have distinctive chemical structures and side effects. Ibuprofen (NSAIDs) slows down the body’s production of fatty acids known as prostaglandins. Unlike aceteaminophen, ibuprofen reduces inflammation (swelling and redness) along with reducing fevers and pains. Therefore, ibuprofen is a little more powerful and lasts longer so it should be given to children with care. It is recommended for children 6 months and older but can be administered to a child with food if they have a sensitive stomach. If there are no symptoms of inflammation, taking acetaminophen is better because it is milder on the digestive system. The amount of dosage that is administered should be watched with care. Large amounts of acetaminophen are very toxic to the …show more content…
Each year, between 3,000 and 49,000 death are caused by the flu, which could’ve easily been decreased with a flu shot. Flu season occurs between October to May and it takes about two weeks for the vaccine to take effect. The flu shot works by creating antibodies in the body to deliver protection against infection from the flu virus. The traditional flu vaccine safeguards against three viruses: an influenza A (H1N1) virus, an influenza A (H3N2) virus, and an influenza B virus. Although getting the flu shot doesn’t completely protect against the flu, it will definitely hinder its strength. People might get a weaker flu symptoms instead of a full on flu that could be life threatening. It is recommended to receive the flu shot every year because the body’s immunity from the flu shot decreases over time. Also, the flu viruses are constantly changing so researchers update the flu vaccine everyday to counter the new viruses. It is recommended that everyone 6 months and older should get vaccinated every year. The more people that get the flu shot, the less chance it has the ability to
The second reason why you should get a flu shot is because it could prevent you from getting sick and missing school days and/or work days. Adults miss roughly about 7 work days due to the common flu. Kids miss a avarge 10 days
According to Papatya Tankut—RPh Vice President of Pharmacy Affairs at CVS health—“Getting a flu shot is the most effective way to protect yourself and your family from getting the flu” (A). Most people underestimate the importance of the flu shot even though it is the best thing someone can do to stay healthy. It allows for people's body to identify influenza so it knows how to fight back incase it has to face the flu. With this, it is also never too late for someone to receive the flu vaccine. The CCD recommends to receive the influenza vaccine as soon as it is released for flu season; however, it is still beneficial to get the vaccine as long as the disease is circulating (C). Throughout the flu season, there are many opportunities to receive the flu and become sick. Even getting the influenza vaccine during the second half of flu season helps protect your body from that point until flu season ends. By families receiving the flu shot at the beginning of the season or towards the middle or end, the influenza vaccine helps people become more immune to the
Fortunately, a vaccine exists for the flu, the influenza vaccine. The influenza shot shows great feedback on it’s effectiveness. “A series of cohort studies undertaken between 1980 and 2010 showed a significant reduction in hospital admission and all-cause mortality after seasonal influenza vaccination for individuals aged 65 years and older” (Assad par. 14). Due to a series of studies done, they found out that within a thirty year time period, the influenza vaccine brought down the amount of hospitalizations and the number of deaths lessened. The influenza shot can also protect the elderly from other health issues as well.
In the U.S. the CDC or Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends people to have the flu vaccination once a year. Anyone over the age of six months or a weak immune system. The flu vaccine is the best way to keep yourself and your family safe from getting the flu. It has also been proven to decrease the amount of deaths yearly and prevent the
Each new strain of the virus must be identified and that is usually done around February for the appropriate development and dispersal of a new vaccine for later that year. They do this by collecting strains of the flu virus from about 100 centers worldwide and then they analyze them in a laboratory. They take this information and use it to decide on the arrangement of the vaccines that are being offered for the following flu season. Also, there are two types of vaccines one that is injected and another that is a nasal-spray vaccine both that are made with live, attenuated virus. Flu vaccines specifically are recommended each year as this article mentions simply because “New flu vaccines are released every year to keep up with rapidly adapting flu viruses” (Mayo). This makes since because flu viruses change so quickly therefore last year's vaccine may not protect someone from the viruses of the upcoming years. Also after vaccination, one’s immune system does produce antibodies that will protect them from the vaccine viruses. Overall the fact that antibody levels start to decrease over time that makes it another reason to get a flu shot every
In recent years encouragement to get flu shots has become a yearly mantra. Elderly, children six months to two years, health care workers and immune-deficient people are urged in the strongest terms to go to their doctors or clinics and get a flu shot. This group encompasses about 98 million people. In the fall of 2004 this was in the forefront of American and to some extent the Western World media with the shortage of this flu seasons vaccine. Current medical wisdom states that flu shots are safe, effective and prevent mortality. A recent study published by The Journal of the American Medicine Association (JAMA) has brought the current wisdom into question. On February 14, 2005 JAMA
As of January, 85 flu related deaths have been confirmed since the beginning of the 2017-2018 influenza season. Each year we experience what is known as flu season, with new strains of the virus infecting millions of people each year, some years receiving a flu vaccine is not sufficient protection from developing the flu and flu like symptoms. The current 2018 flu season is a bad season. The vaccine that was developed and administered unfortunately was not correctly developed.
Insulin is a crucial thing in a Type One Diabetics life. It is the only treatment for them. Not to confuse you, but insulin is no cure by any means. Their pancreas has stopped making insulin, so they must inject themselves with insulin several times each day in order to stay alive. They also must check their blood glucose levels at least every five hours throughout the daytime to make sure it does not go to high or low and before each meal. The only real treatment for Type Two Diabetics is eating healthy foods and exercising daily. They also must check their blood glucose levels regularly, but not near as often. Some people do take insulin for their Diabetes to help their pancreas produce a little more insulin, but it is only required if food, exercise and medicine (pills) are not working.
Among the easiest ways to protect yourself from influenza every year is to get a flu vaccine regularly. So many programs exist to make it convenient and inexpensive, and more come out every year, and the consequences can be life-threatening.
In a article written by the Joslin diabetes center, they compare insulin injections versus insulin pumps and they stated that the injections required education and training. The use of insulin pumps and injection therapy is cheaper than pump therapy a lot of people don't realize how much training and education is involved with pump, therefore injections are a more easier method. The cons of having insulin injections is that low blood glucose levels can happen because diabetics can be using many different kinds of insulin. Frequent injections can also mean that the patient can develop a resistant in areas of the body where the insulin may not be absorbed correctly. With the insulin pump the pump does deliver insulin continuously throughout
It is necessary to consider changing from an oral diabetes medication to insulin injections after
Our clinical group elected to do this semester’s teaching project on correct insulin administration. This topic is relevant because millions of Americans are currently affected with diabetes. Correct administration of the insulin injection is necessary for proper absorption, and also to prevent a condition where fat accumulates under the skin from injections called lipohypertrophy. This information is fundamental in the nursing process, due to nurses frequently administer insulin to patients, as well as play a vital role in patient education. Research has indicated that many patients do not recall receiving any education on how to administer insulin correctly. For our teaching, we created a poster to hang in the staff restroom on the ICU West floor at Redmond Medical
People who wait to get the shot have a higher risk of catching the disease because your body is exposes. Another misconception people have is they think you only need to get vaccinated once or once a year. This is wrong because a shot of flu vaccine can give your body immunity for many months, and even as long as a year, but it is not a forever cure. Reason why the flu is spread more during colder weather is because people tend to stay more indoors where they interact with others in a close environment. The time you take to get vaccinated makes your body to be at higher risk of catching the
One of the many vaccines people routinely get is the influenza vaccine or flu shot. With flu season quickly approaching, it is paramount that people are receiving this vaccine, especially those that are immunocompromised or have weakened/immature immune systems. The CDC has current
Saur et al. (2013) conducted a level II prospective study to determine whether glycemic derangements are more effectively controlled using software-guided insulin dosing compared with paper-based protocols. The study evaluated 197 critically ill patients, by consecutive sampling, treated in a tertiary hospital surgical ICU between January 1-June 30, 2008 and January 1-September 30, 2009 (Saur et al., 2013). Patients who required continuous insulin infusions for hyperglycemia and had a minimum of a three-day stay in the ICU were included in the study. The population’s demographics did not statistically vary. The intervention group received the software-guided insulin dosing while the control group received the standard care. The standard
