Assessment One: Interpretation and comparison of online digital objects.
*PLEASE NOTE: As I was unable to find both of these scenes by themselves online, I have transcribed where they occur in their larger bodies and have attached screenshots that directly relate to my points.
OBJECT ONE: ‘Projector Scene’ from the episode Hush, of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, occurring approximately 27 minutes in.
I have chosen to scrutinize this particular scene as its complete lack of dialogue allows us to closely examine how non-verbal communication is used to convey meaning. “Nonverbal communication between people is communication through sending and receiving wordless cues” (Stephen W. Littlejohn 2009). When we consider that ‘Individuals are believed to use clothing to define and communicate their social identities to others” (Fienberg 1992), we can attach a wealth of information to the onscreen characters simply from observing their costumes. Giles’ blazer allows him to be viewed as authoritative and mature; Buffy’s fashionable outfit is synonymous with her popular status, whilst Xander’s sports Guernsey and sneakers underpin his casual, outgoing persona. The director of the show uses the
‘style, branding, colour and fashionability’ of the clothing as a tool for the audience to
‘assess their personality traits’ (Chalky et al, 2012).
Non verbal communication within this scene also manifests itself via kinetic transmission; that is, ‘posture, eye contact and the
The futuristic looks of 60s clothing were revived, as were the neon colors of the 80s, and the “hippie” style of the 70s (Korsnes n.p.). The fashion of the decade got many elements from previous styles, and many old trends were redesigned and made popular again. Thus, a lot of vintage clothing styles became very popular in this era. Because of globalization, designers based their items on various styles from around the world, causing the fashion of the 2000s to be more diverse, and become a mix and match of different styles. This increase in the variety of the styles made it easier to express one’s identity through fashion (Rindfuss
Clothing styles have always had a close connection to developments in clothing creation. The two are inextricably linked by public demand, fabric availability, and the wealth of people to afford them. Even back to the Industrial Revolution and Renaissance, when people began to have more clothing choices, one can see the relationship between what the people need or want and what the manufacturers create.
Fashion is everything to society and the media. The fashion industry has transformed into a necessity in the life of people. Everyone wants to look good, feel fabulous and feel as if we belong with everyone else. The envy and desire to wear certain things and look a certain way all come, from wearing the latest fashion handbags, accessories, dresses, shoes, and the list goes on. But, when is considering fashion into an individual’s life going too far to the extreme? Many do not consider the whereabouts of fashion materials and how the environment is affected by the mere existence of certain garments. Some may believe these objects grow on trees. But that is clearly not the case. Even though it would be nice. The fashion industry as a
The movie highlights the idea that fashion is a form of self-expression by showing the significance of the outfits each character decides to wear. An example is when Andrea first started working for Miranda, she was the outcast of the office by not wearing high fashion clothing. Receiving multiple insults and running tedious errands transformed Andrea from a conservative person who was a pushover, to someone who was confident and stood up for what she wanted. Andrea had a choice to make, continue working as Miranda’s assistant, or move on with her life to follow her dreams. She was strong enough to make the courageous decision for herself, family, and
If the walls of judgement created by mankind were demolished, then ones’ individuality is what remains to define one as a person. The Shakespearian play, King Lear, delineates an underlying message through the relationship of clothing and ones’ identity. Several characters in King Lear depend on clothing to depict their identity. As the play goes on, the central character, King Lear’s state of mind in particular, changes and clothing is used as a median to reflect this change. Proving that characters are allowing materialistic items to represent their identity rather than allowing their personality to outshine their clothing.
The fashion industry is rapidly growing and constantly generating new fashion trends almost weekly. Fashion for some may seem ridiculous and unnecessary; but fashion is not just a meaningless usage of article of clothing or farcical materials sew together for coverage. There is more to fashion than meets the eyes, fashion is precious and significant. It is a reflection of self-image, it speak the ream about who we are and how we review ourselves. Not only is fashion the reflection of self-image but also the reflection of our history as Coco Channel have said, “Fashion is not something that exist in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.” Fashion
So to summarize too I believe in the scenes that we chose to reenact and tweak a little bit were the ones pretty much straight out the comic book and the scene that occurs a little before we encounter Mrs. Sharp was just to show that Nite Owl II and Rorschach used to be partners. But to me the point was to show a bit more of the characters themselves giving them a bit of emotion.
Superdry is a clothing company inspired by a trip to Tokyo in 2003. They aim to create clothing that incorporates 3 cultures: Japanese, American and British. They manage to do so by merging together British tailoring with Americana design, with subtle hints of Japanese characters. As a result, Superdry is a unique clothing brand with an exceptional amount of detail, leading to it being a very popular brand for those 16-35. Another aspect that has made the brand so popular is the fact that many celebrities have been pictured wearing the brand. The most famous of these is probably David Beckham who was snapped wearing their “Brad” leather jacket, which then went on to sell 77,000 in just 2 years. This report aims to
If something is ‘performative’ it constructs a series of effects (Butler 2013). Identity and topics of representation are based on these “performances” that builds what it means to be male or female, or man or woman. These roles are unconsciously performed every day with most people not even realising that they even do it. The most important role performed daily is when people dress to leave the house; fashion has for decades played a very important role in people’s lives. Two of the main writers to have discussed about this role is Judith Butler and Diana Crane. Both writers analyse the performance of gender identity and fashion roles in society. Butler’s difference between “performed” and “performative” is not fully concretized, and this
Psychology plays a major role in every professional creative field. The art of fashion design is not an exception. Fashion uses psychology in many different ways, from getting customers to purchase clothing, to self-expression in the clothing, to analyzing psychographics in a population to identify a potential target market. First impressions are made largely on how a person’s attire looks, through use of color, fit, and design. Emotions and moods can be evoked through fit and color on a person’s body. All these effects on the human brain and psyche are taken into great consideration when designing garments.
The scene described above appears to be quite critical to the plot development in the movie. However, this appears nowhere in the original text. The viewer must ask him/herself why this was added and the consequences of the change.
In the fashion industry, fashion brands are highly associated with branding, because of the intensive competitive fashion markets. Moreover, fashion brands are self-expressing to some extent (Carroll, 2008). Building creative brand image is important for the fashion brands. In addition, Carroll (2008) said that social responsibility and potential risks are the two aspects related to the fashion brands. Just as
Social and cultural changes are major determinants of emerging fashions. However, they are themselves affected by the other drivers of change that include globalization of world markets and accessibility of more sophisticated communications technologies. The latter has provided people with faster and wider access to more ideas and influences from other cultures and societies, driving demand for wider choice in fashion products.
(2012) This leads me to question if fashion apparel is competing with industry’s sportswear markets by compromising the performance enhancing qualities for garments that are simply just aesthetically pleasing. (Morganosky, 1984) elaborates on this stating that consumers are willing to pay higher prices for apparel with a high aesthetic value regardless of the low functional value. Ko et al. (2012) agrees consumers’ value fashion and quality however argues they are not willing to pay a high price for something new and innovative. (Dickson & Pollack, 2000) add to this statement in relation to sports garments with female consumers regarding aesthetic aspects such as style and brand characteristics to be more essential than the functional aspects such as comfort and other physical performance-enhancing features. Similarly (Eckma et al., 1990) reports on the evaluation of purchase behaviour in women’s apparel. Style was chosen as more important in determining rejection or adoption of the garments. A visual criterion seems to have the greatest impact on selection of apparel such as fashion-ability or popularity, aesthetic appeal, and self-expression (Eckma et al., 1990). Although it seems there is a divide in opinion when it comes to retail pricing the majority of research studies seems to suggest there is a major emphasis on the aesthetic appearance.
Today’s fashion and retail market is highly competitive making it essential for brands to create the right atmosphere and convey the right message through their visual merchandising. Visual merchandising, when done correctly, is the most direct way of stimulating consumers and influencing their buying behavior. Shopping is more than just
