A group consists of two or more people who interact with each other and share a common purpose. A group consists of individuals who work independently and are led by a strong focused individual. A group that I participate in is Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Sanstha (BAPS) Swaminarayan youth group. BAPS is a worldwide religious and civic organization within the Swaminarayan branch of Hinduism. BAPS was established as a formal organization on 5 June 1907 by Shastriji Maharaj. It was formed on the founder's doctrinal stand that Swaminarayan had promised to remain manifest in the person of Akshar, a term used to describe his chief devotee and Swaminarayan's abode. From the age of 5 to 21, I have been an active member of the BAPS Swaminarayan …show more content…
These five factors are stability, similarity, size, support, and satisfaction. These factors measure the extent to which group members get along. However, I am going to focus on these four factors in my paper and they are socialization, similarity, support, and satisfaction. Socialization is an important process that helps us internalize the organization’s culture. An organization’s culture is comprised of values, norms, language, beliefs, symbols, and assumptions that develop over time and begin with the founder of the organization. Pramukh Swami Maharaj was the succession to the founder Shastriji Maharaj and he was the one who created the values, norms, language, beliefs, and symbols that we at BAPS honor today. The values implemented are respect, honesty, friendliness, and teamwork. The language implemented is Hindi, which is spoken by approximately 490 million people around the world. The beliefs implemented are that swami will protect you and bring you a life of peace and serenity. Lastly, the symbols include the BAPS logo and Murtis which are any form, embodiment or solid object, that typically refers to an image, statue or idol of a deity or person in Indian …show more content…
Our strengths include the internalization of culture which is embracing the values, norms, language, beliefs, and symbols set forth by the founders of BAPS. Another strength is the ethnic and cultural similarities that are shared among all group members. The support that is received by those in higher positions is another major strength, which also leads to high levels of satisfaction to those involved in the youth groups. However, one of our major weaknesses and challenges is the lack of diversity seen in the members. Heterogeneous groups perform better on more difficult, complex tasks. The diversity of heterogeneous groups, stimulates
Everyone is part of a dominant or subordinate group. Both groups are similar because they label the targeted group. However, both groups are completely different from each other. The dominant groups distinguish people who are privileged, while subordinate is for people who are underprivileged. As I reflected on my past I discovered I was part of a subordinate do to my ethnicity and dominant group because of my sexuality. Being a heterosexual Mexican women comes with some costs and benefits.
In my opinion, group work is a type of cooperative learning that helps people to accomplish a certain task in a faster and more effective manner. Team working also helps to achieve the tasks that are impossible to finish by one individual. However, if people in a group have a lot of conflicts, group work will not be able to achieve as much as we expected. There are many reasons which lead to dissatisfaction in group work such as individualism as well as conflicts in opinion and time.
Due to this, the effort to identify and understand how trends and traits making up organizational culture have been a priority amongst most organizations seeking to improve the effectiveness of strategic leadership. According to Schein (2004), the reason why such issues as culture and leadership is important stems from one of the critical factors, that is the fact that certain trends and traits are shared among a group hence forming a shared culture. Schein also explains other critical elements of culture such as structural stability. The definition of culture within an organization creates some sense of stability as it defines the identity

An organization, in its simplest form, is comprised of people brought together to achieve a common goal whether it be solving a problem, selling a product or providing a service. The existence of the organization is wholly dependent on the collective body of individuals involved and it is these individuals that are the driving force behind the success or failure of a company. The relationships that connect the people within the organization dictate how the culture is developed and perceived.
“When groups are planned so that each member's strengths have authentic importance to the ultimate success of the group's activity, this creates a situation where individual learning styles, skills, and talents are valued, and students shine in their fortes and learn from each other in the areas where they are not as expert.”(Willis)
I agree with you that assessments in a group is essential to understand the functioning of the group members. Also, I believe that it is important to assess individual members as well as the group as a whole. As a group facilitator we must constantly gather pertinent information that will be used to achieve the individuals and groups goals. Assessing the group helps to make the group more cohesive and beneficially to the members. You made a great point that understanding the characteristics of the group members can help improve group participation. I do believe that if a member is not participating does not mean that they are not benefiting from the group. Also, having a member that monopolize the group does not they are
Interaction patterns throughout the group were definitely different peer to peer and each participant had different ways of interacting with one another. There were a few factors thrown in that influenced that interaction patterns. The relationship between the members was one of the main influences. These girls seemed to truly love each other and acted as though there were sisters, and their instructor Dominque was the mother. This was largely due to the amount of time that goes into the group and the time they spend together. The nature of their group goals was all similar as well, thus creating a steady bridge for the girls to progress on. The leadership within the group helped influence the interaction patterns as well. The dancers looked up to Dominque so much, so they were willing to do anything she said. The way they interacted with her was as though she was their role model, and truly someone they idealized. Since Dominique took on such a maternal role, she was able to provide both stern and playful group interaction influences. The size of the group also highly effected their interactions within the group because they were not a huge group. They had lots of
These can be further sorted out by creating a Good 'Culture' in the organization, which is based on principles and
A few factors assume a part in the accomplishment of an organization that are past the extent of money related explanations alone. Authoritative culture, service rationality and morals in business each affect how well a business performs in the long term. Regardless of the size, business or level of gainfulness of an association, business morals are a standout amongst the most critical parts of long term achievement.
There are lots of people around the U.S who who do not understand the hard struggle of people from other countries. Lots of people make stereotypes about Asian people, Latinos, and people from Arabic countries. People would normally assume that if you are asian, you speak Chinese or Japanese, or that you paint nails, or own a “Chinese food” restaurant.
An important part of our learning and growing experience must stem from our ability to analyze and reflect upon the groups that we have been members in. This reflection can define our understanding of the weaknesses both in ourselves and in the others within our group; and it can help to shape the way that we act in future groups. Adjusting ourselves to compensate for our weaknesses, based upon an honest and thorough examination of our actions within a group setting, is one of most important thing for any person to do. It is only through this evaluation that we can improve ourselves and our interactions with others. This paper will examine a group that was required to make an important decision about adding a new member
If I could change anything about how the group functions, I would change the lack of diversity in our BAPS youth groups. I feel as if our groups are limited to the ideas and thinking of the people who come from the same ethical background as me. I would like to raise the awareness of the impact that BAPS has had on my life and share my stories with people of other ethnic backgrounds. We in no way would try to convert people to Hinduism, because we believe that God can be worshiped in every form. I just believe we should open the doors of BAPS to other people and let them embrace and learn about the satisfaction that can come from being a part of a group that is working to make the world a better place. A group that focuses on giving people
Diversity in culture and demographic characteristics can be a negative impact or be one of the team's greatest strengths, depending on how the team as a whole functions and applies these different “routes to success”. A group can become a high performing team by understanding how cultural and demographic differences influence group behavior. The groups must realize that they can benefit from their diversity to their advantage and into a high performance team.
