Computers in general give people the ability to complete tasks that would have taken days or weeks to complete with the clicks of a few buttons. In the past when technologies had not developed much, people usually entertained by getting together to dance, sing, or listen to music; many of them went to a small bar in the community to drink or play cards. Today is completely distinct from the time in the past. With innovative science and modern technologies, the entertainment has become easier and more convenient for all people. Everyone can relax and amuse themselves wherever and whenever with modern electronic devices such as cell phone, tablet, LCD TV, laptop, etc. Therefore, technology has become part of our life. Many people say that we could not do anything without technology; it helps people to make work easier. Technology saves us time and allows us to access material in only minutes. “The Internet and online subscription databases, even as a supplement to the printed works in the library, allow students to see, and force them to consider or reject, points of view that they might never have encountered in decades past” (Gow 4).With all the time technology produces, it also has downsides and it also may have created a less intelligent society.

Are computers going to replace the human thought? How many times do you see yourself going to www.google.com or some other search engine to find even the simplest information? In the educational system more and more courses use and require some form of computer activity. One of the main concerns is that education used to be about research, problem solving, critical thinking, and human analysis. Now with the implication of computers, education is not about the research, it focus is how fast can you find the answer. The lazy point and click approach may have the answers, but has no real meaning to it. Computers are taking away not only basic skills, but the need to develop them at all.

The clock is ticking, the work is piling up, and with only a few hours to go before sunrise you stop and realize that you have just read some fifty pages and absorbed almost nothing. Some would agree when I say that this situation epitomizes one of the common problems of the Net Generation. With the help of the Internet, not only has every aspect of life gotten faster and more efficient, but it has changed the way people process information and perform tasks. Some people may say that the world does not rely too much on computers. I do agree that computers have done some wonderful things. They make it to where deployed soldiers can see their children and wives from anywhere as long as they have a web cam, advanced computer-based systems are used to examine delicate organs of the body. Some of the complex surgeries can be performed with the aid of computers, but I feel that the bad outweighs the good. People that don’t agree with me don’t think about the children that spend so much time on the computer that their grades start dropping at school, the children that fall prey to pedophiles, or the children that commit suicide over cyber bullying. Those people don’t think about the people that get their identity stolen right out from underneath them.

Is our society too dependent on computers? I, like many Americans today, have become reliant on the usage of computers. It influences all aspects of my life by bringing about a new level of convenience. Computers are a part of our everyday lives whether we like it or not. When considering Sherry Turkle’s question, “What are we thinking about when using computers?”, I reflect on my introduction to technology and my past experiences with computers. I like to think that I was born tech savvy, and my personal experiences are a reflection of that. Although my introduction to computers started off rocky, I am surprised to see how my past experiences relate to my opinion of technology use today. My first encounter with a computer started in elementary school, which had no more than four computers in our classrooms. Seldom were we allowed to use the computers due to our inexperience with technology and the lack of knowledge my teachers had of the computers. In second grade we were introduced to a program called Accelerated Reader. We had to read a paper copy of a book, then take a quiz on the book online. The program forced us to read because we received grades for the quizzes, but it gave us a competitive spirit to read more. During my elementary school years, the school received a computer lab which was mainly for state testing. Rarely were we able to use the computer lab for leisure due to the lack of our knowledge about the computers and my teachers’ inability to find substantial online learning. Around first grade, most of the teachers in my elementary school enrolled in a class to receive a new SMART Board for their classrooms.
