One Can Only Take So Much
Introduction: Fighting the Issues “Never be bullied into silence. Never allow yourself to be made a victim. Accept no one’s definition of your life, but define yourself,” said by an anti-bullying activist, Tim Fields. In America there are people who go through the pain of being bullied or raped. There are many ways people can choose to deal with their issues. Some people choose to deal with these issues by talking to someone. Others choose to shut down. They either feel scared or ashamed to tell anyone. These issues are really important and should be taken seriously. The best thing to do is to talk to someone and not have suicide be an option. With suicide being the second leading cause of death in

They never get the chance to actually get to know a person or understand them. They never reach out to that person or get to know what is happening in their life. This series does a good job of showing how fast one little lie can change the reputation of a person. This series not only shows one issue, but it has multiple issues that people go through on a daily basis. It mainly focuses on bullying, rape, and suicide. This series is bringing awareness and letting people know that there is help. It shows people that they are worthy and valued in life and shouldn 't feel any other way. The intended audience for this series are teenagers. This series is showing teens to not keep everything bottled in. To let someone know what is happening. In the series the more Hannah kept everything to herself the more she fell into a depression. Everything that happened to her seemed magnified. For example, on the seventh episode, “Tape 4, Side A” one of Hannah’s classmates, Zach, emptied her bag of compliments that each student had in a Communications class. Even though this doesn’t seem like a huge deal, to her it was. She needed those compliments because she was already falling into a depression. The series 13 Reasons Why, appeals to pathos. Suspense is one of the main feelings because with the cassette tapes Hannah left behind it leaves people to
Bullying is one of the leading causes in teen suicide today. People bullied in the past or present have been studied and it has shown that they have a lower quality of life. Though they have a lower quality of life, the have better physical and mental health. (“Seaman” 1). Studies have shown that most bullying happens in middle school and high school. There is bullying in elementary school but it is minimal and less serious (“Bullying Statistics” 1). Most kids refuse to speak up while being bullied in fear that the bully will just taunt them more (“Cyber-Safety Act” 2). Bullying has become a very serious issue regarding our society today.
Today’s teens relate to people in dystopian societies. The main people in dystopian stories are the people who see the wrong in the societies that they are living in. this is shown in
“A 14-year-old girl in treatment for depression, reported that she was being bullied in school. She said that girls in her classes constantly made negative comments about her appearance, dress, and behavior. They excluded her from social activities despite her desire to participate. She said that the girls were telling lies about her to boys in the class, which was damaging her reputation. What upsets her the most was that an online site had been created in which students were encouraged to write all the reasons they hated her. She cried and said that she could not avoid the bullying even outside of school. She believed the only way to escape the bullying was to not exist anymore, and she confirmed that she was suicidal.”(Karen 2016) Bullying at the age of 13-19 increases the rate of depression, anxiety, suicide, and other mental health issues. Bullying is plaguing teens across the United States and is causing possible mental health issues later in victims’ lives. Each local community needs to take action to dull the effects bullying has on teens.
Another example of how this lesson is developed is when Hannah explains to her audience that by messing with a single part of her life, you mess with her entire life. “And when you mess with one part of a person’s life, you’re not messing with just that part. Unfortunately, you can’t be that precise and selective. When you mess with one part of a person’s life, you’re messing with their entire life” (Asher 203-204). Hannah clearly seems to be aware of the fact that people do not think realize that their actions have such an impact on Hannah’s feelings. Therefore, she makes sure that the people listening to the tapes will realize how their behavior towards Hannah, though it seemed meaningless at the moment, really did have a huge impact on her
Bullying is at an all-time high, as a result of being bullied, many depressed adolescents, and teens have committed suicide as a way to escape. Across all populations, genders, and race at some point in everyone’s life they have been the subject of bullying and or depression. It is obvious that everyone is susceptible to the highs and lows of depression no matter their social status or age.
“Nationwide, one out of four students from the ages twelve to eighteen have been bullied. That is twenty five percent to the teenage/young adult population and these numbers are continuously to rise every day” (Wassdorp, Bradshaw, and Leaf 116, 149-156). Bullying is the action of repeated harmful acts or harassing another in various forms. Many situations fall under one or even multiple of these categories: physical, verbal, indirect, and cyber. What this does is strips the victim down from their identity and leaves them to pity themselves for being the way they are. Bullying is an issue in this nation because it tears apart the teenage/young adult population, and it is causing an increase in risk of suicide among these groups. Bullying is
Bullying has become a major issue in the United States and around the world. What brought the attention to people about bullying is the number of suicides that are committed by adolescents and the stories they share online or live television. Bullying is categorized to be direct verbal, direct physical, and indirect forms. Not every person has an idea how terrible bullying can be and how harmful it is to the victim. Bullying has driven students to commit actions they have never done before such as cutting themselves, suicidal thoughts, health disorders, and bad behavior. Bullying must be taken seriously, because it results in negative effects on its victims and may drive students to commit horrific actions. Lawmakers should draft anti-bullying legislation, students should stand up for one another, and society should work out what can be done to combat this problem.
In the article Big Bad Bully by Hara Estroff Marano she discusses the main components of behavior that make up a bully, who can be a bully and why people choose to bully others. In the beginning of the article she focuses on suicide victims who could no longer take the mental, physical and emotional abuse of bullying. Marano (2017), “Months later, in Cherokee County, Georgia, 15-year-old Brian Head grew tired of the same teasing and deeds. The denouement was only slightly more remarkable. He shot himself to death—in front of his classmates. He walked to the front of the classroom and pulled the trigger.” The same teasing and deeds Marano is speaking of is being tripped in the hall, various name calling and being physically bullied. The article goes into depth of how the Western society treats bullying. We are prone to often dismiss bullying as kids being kids and, teachers are in denial that any such behavior exist in their class. However, the sad truth is that more times than not there is always a classroom bully. Because we often overlook the severity of bullying choosing to close our eyes we get a harsh reality when someone commits suicide. It forces us to acknowledge the hard truth with open eyes that we have chosen to close for too long.
Bullying is the cause of many suicides and deaths (Home n. pag). In McCormack’s article, he explains how many students are bullied each day and harassed to the point where they question their own self-esteem. They are no longer
If the bully harasses the victim and or emabaresses them so bad that they commit suicide, the bully should serve at least 4 years of counseling every single day at the time of their choosing or serve 2 years in a psychiatric hospital. This could decrease the 14% of high school students who consider committing suicide and almost 7% of them attempt it. Bully's need help and are scarred but not as much as the victim
I can name multiple people that I know who have had thoughts of suicide due to the sheer amount of agony they endure from bullying by others. Bullying dates back to when humans were cavemen. It’s in our nature and even it’s most common between individuals who find themselves more superior than others. It’s become to the point where bullying has been taking lives of so many victims that it is not foreseeable. I am sure that everyone has been a victim themselves or has witnessed this sin being done, now imagine being pushed to the point where you no longer want to live because of the constant hell you are put through because of these bullies. Some people are just unable to push through all the misery and resort to this fate. Now, this is completely preventable as certain measures of conduct shall be put into place to counter these tragedies. If twelve kids a day committing suicide due to bullying is not enough to make schools intervene, what will?
As a person who has personally dealt with years of harassment I am most definitely an anti-bullying activist. However, never have I felt the need to take my own life over the verbal abuse that I endured over the years, but knowing that there are far worse situations than mine, I understand why someone would do so. No one can fully understand how it feels to be mentally or physically abused unless they have dealt with it themselves. I believe that no one, under any circumstances, should ever bullied for simply being themselves, for instance, their race, skin color, sexual orientation, religion, etc. Most bullying cases take place in school, which should not come as a shocker for anyone considering adolescent suicide is literally all over
According to http://www.suicide.org/suicide-faqs.html 30,000 people in the US commit suicide each and every year. Remember, stop the bully, don’t just stand there and do nothing, don’t have to deal with that kind of guilt. I hope you are inspired by this message, I have brought to you. If there is a bullying situation going on around you, then stand up for the victim and let them know they are more than just their appearance, skin color, popularity, and weight. I can ensure, that will make their day or week. You can be the one to save someone's life right now. Your name could go worldwide if you stop a bullying
13 Reason why is a very popular show on Netflix that many teengers and young adults have watched. It was about a teen named Hannah who was going through some distressing time through high school and in the end someone got hurt, not just Hannah but one of her friends as well, Alex.
Bullies might not always be aware of the severe consequences of their actions but this cannot condone the sorrow and pain they inflict upon the victims. Bullying often evokes psychosomatic illnesses. Victims complain about headache, heart diseases, dizziness, nausea and sleep disorder. Bullying becomes the dominating part of their whole life; they cannot do anything without thinking of the horror of the next workday. Weakened as they are, victims become an even easier target for people who want to harm them. It is a vicious circle, hard to break out for those terrorized by bullying. Many of them think of committing suicide as the last way out.
