Ithaca College, known as IC, is a private college located just an hour’s drive south of Syracuse, in Ithaca, New York. The school was founded in 1892 as a music school. While it has always specialized in liberal arts, Ithaca College also offers a number of programs in business, science, and communications. It is popular for its degrees in journalism, performing arts, and health sciences.
Ithaca College has an average of 6,000 undergraduate students and 450 graduate students. The college has an average acceptance rate and offers over a hundred degree programs among their five schools. In addition, they have master’s programs in a number of disciplines, as well as doctoral programs in allied health and physical therapy.

Among the sports offered are flag football, soccer, kickball, basketball, volleyball, softball, ski racing, and ultimate Frisbee. Of all the programs, basketball is the most popular, with around forty teams competing.
Ithaca, New York, is a town of approximately 30,000 people. The town is home to Ithaca College and Cornell University. The closest airport and train station is located 50 miles away in Syracuse, New York. Students twenty-one and older can enjoy visiting a number of bars, including Ithaca Beer Company, a local brewery located five miles from the college. Ithaca also has a night club, The Oasis, which is opened to people of all ages.
While Ithaca College’s Greek life scene was vibrant in the seventies and eighties, a number of hazing scandals occurred in the 80s. These scandals were brought to national attention following the hazing related death of one student. Because of this, Ithaca College no longer recognizes any social or service fraternities and sororities. There are currently three Greek organizations at Ithaca College, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Sigma Alpha Iota, and Mu Phi Epsilon. All three promote musicianship.
With a top ranked journalism department, Ithaca College has a number of student run media outlets. The Ithacan, the college’s weekly newspaper, has been awarded more than 200 journalism awards and is recognized as one of the best student-run newspapers in the country. Ithaca College also has Ithaca College Television (ICTV), which is the world’s oldest student-run college television channel.
