“Jesus Is a Brand of Jeans,” by Jean Kilbourne, argues that most products are advertised are trying to convince us that the product is more important than people. Kilbourne also says that despite what people think, advertising affects us all. Commercials promise you the best quality and even happiness. Once the product is in your hands and is ready to be used, we end up very disappointed. I agree with Kilbourne because I’ve watched several advertisements, and one, in particular, has certainly affected me. I was at home cooking my meals for the week when I heard the commercial.
First, the commercial began with, “Are you tired of food sticking to your pan?” As it asked questions, I subconsciously answered them and I was automatically drawn in. The commentator went on and persuaded me to buy the non-stick pan; it stated that when you cook food everything will slide right off and that it doesn’t stick to the pan like other cooking pans do. I don’t think I had ever been that excited to cook my chicken. I quickly opened the box and was ready to put it to the test. The chicken was ready to be put on the pan, and the pan was definitely ready to cook my chicken. As I stood there watching my chicken cook, I got very nervous. I began to see that my chicken was sticking to the pan, so I sprayed Pam on it and it got worse. I was very disappointed in myself for believing that there would be a pan that didn’t stick. They promised me happiness because the food I would cook was not going to stick anymore. Kilbourne states that the problem with advertising isn’t that it creates artificial needs, but that it exploits our very real and human desires. We are surrounded by advertising that yokes our needs with products and promises us that things will deliver what in fact they never can.
