Burgoyne was conceived February 24, 1723, in Sutton, Bedfordshire, England, he is the firstborn of John Burgoyne and Anna Maria. His father was the commander of the British armed force at the time and Burgoyne wished to follow in his footsteps at an early age. Burgoyne studied at Westminster 1733, it was there he met his lifelong friend Thomas Gage. Sooner rather than later, the two would both prevail to the rank of general. His second friend being, Lord James Strange who later turned into his brother in law. Around the age of fifteen Burgoyne bought a commission for horse guards. It was additionally around this time his incredible taste in garments got to be distinctly known, in thus giving him the nickname, "Gentleman Johnny". In 1741 his betting got the best of him and he was forced to sell his commission to pay his gambling debts. While Britain was still in the war, Burgoyne chose to purchase, 'cornets commission' and rejoined the armed force. He was later apart of the first Royal Dragoons. Not surprisingly his promotions came rather rapidly. First to Lieutenant then before the year's over he was captain. He left back to England in major embarrassment and was forever blamed for the loss of Saratoga, which became a huge turning point in the war. Effects The Generals effects on history were major, without his surrender at Saratoga the patriots might have never won the war. However, the effects were high in England. With the loss of Saratoga, the British now had to find some way to regain they're ruling placed in the colonies. However, Britians biggest loss would be the land and the most highly well-trained
