Regarded as one of the most beloved figures in American history, George Washington maintains an almost godlike image in the minds of many. Despite his reputation as a leader, Washington was not always flawless in his military exploits. His time in the French and Indian War granted him the experiences and skills needed to be effective as commander of the Continental Army, and not all of these experiences included victories. It was the knowledge Washington gained in the French and Indian War, and the war itself, that helped the colonies to obtain their independence from Great Britain.

He has first gained public notice when he went to persuade the French the leave the Ohio Valley as they threatened to drive out the English (“George Washington”). This began to what is known as the Seven Year’s French and Indian War. After this war, many taxes were created to pay for the debt of Britain Protection. New Englanders felt the taxes were an abuse of power and began an American Revolution at Lexington and Concord in which Washington joined the Continental Congress and was named the Commander in Chief of the Continental forces. He led the forces to a moral boosting victory at Valley Forge against the British. After the war, he became the most important man in the country (“George Washington”). Washington retired from the army and became elected the first president of the United States after the new government was formed. When he retired from office he had given his ‘Farewell Address’ speech that included two main priorities for the success of America: no political parties and no foreign affairs (Williams). Although tensions between the French and British were inevitable, Washington was vital in the victory of the later Revolutionary War from the military knowledge he gained from the Seven Year’s War. During the Revolutionary War, there were many battles that were fought, but there were a few that changed the result of the war. The battles of Trenton and Princeton were fought strategically. During both of the battles, Washington made bold moves that later impacted the army’s success. Another battle that was fought was the Battle of Saratoga, and before this battle, the Continental Army did not have a strong chance of winning because they were facing the powerful and well equipped British army. The Battle of Saratoga was the battle that completely changed the tide of the war. The Battle of Yorktown was the last land battle fought of the Revolutionary War. The battle of Trenton and the battle of Saratoga brought a crucial victory to the Continental Army, but the battle of Trenton improved morale in the patriots more so than the battle of Saratoga did. The battle of Trenton proved to be significant by ultimately turning the tide of the conflict in their favor, improving morale and hope for the war.

The Battle of Saratoga and Yorktown are said to be two of the most influencive battles of the Revolutionary War because of what they attributed to. The Battle of Saratoga proved to be a turning point since France made a military alliance with the Americans once they defeated British. This gave a great advantage to the Americans since they were now aided with ammunition, guns, money, and troops. A few years later came the Battle of Yorktown, with the Amercians once again claiming victory after the British general Cornwallis surrendered. While this battle was not the last in the war, it did prompt the British government to eventually negotiate an end to the war. June 1755, George Washington Became Commander in Chief but to many patriots he was much more than the Commander in Chief. He became the calm voice to those who needed it, George Washington was known to be strongly determined and held a heavy load of the patriotic duty to country. George Washington was the real backbone into the Revolution war and kept it from going under during the hardships and unexpected trials and tribulations that occurred during the long years of war. The Battle of Yorktown was the decisive battle of the American Revolutionary War. The French and American forces laid siege upon the British forces at Yorktown, Virginia and eventually forced the surrender of nearly one-third of the total number of British troops in America. This battle showed that massive loss of life is not the only factor that will determine the victor, as there were a relatively low number of casualties taken by both sides. Instead, it was an aggregate of economic, social, geographical, and weather factors along with a bit of luck when it came to the timing of the major military movements and tactics all led to the success of the Franco-American forces. Had it not been for these combined factors the Battle of Yorktown and the American Revolutionary Was may have had a very different outcome.

The Continental Army’s choice of George Washington as their leader of the continental army was critical in ensuring the United States’ victory. While many in the colonies wanted freedom from Britain that was not the case for everyone. Individuals’ motives were largely location dependant. The Battle of Saratoga proved to be pivotal in ensuring the United States’ victory against British forces.

Back in 1774 Thomas Gage had a job that no one would envy. He would be tasked with stemming the tide of a rebellion in the colonies of North America. Many considered him the protagonist of the English cause in the Revolutionary war. Tensions were rising and Gage had just been appointed Military Governor of Massachusetts. With this title, he would effectively be the most powerful British official in the 13 Colonies. Gage had control over military, political, and diplomatic decisions (Britannica, 2015). When relations turned sour between the American colonies and their mother country, people looked to Gage to make it right. Gage was unable to take the necessary actions to prevent the war and ended up being a driving factor in the American Revolution.

The Battle of Yorktown gave General Washington the advantage he needed to win. General Washington, with the help of the French saw the opportunity to end the war by cornering General Cornwallis at Yorktown. (The History Channel Website, n.d.) Prior to the surrender of General Cornwallis to General Washington at Yorktown, the British were winning several battles. General Washington needed to do something before he had no other options left. General Washington’s forces were low in numbers and strength but knew the land to give them an edge in being rooted out by the British. (Lanning, 2005) General Washington used time and heavy militia to replenish his losses but did not have the troops to capture British Garrisons. (Lanning, 2005) The British in turn, could not pass the militia aiding General Washington. (Lanning, 2005)The militia, fighting alongside continental troops, had the land and the support of the people who aided their cause during the battle. The stalemate continued with no sign of either side budging. Guerilla-style operations were used to win many fights and battles that General Washington’s own troops could not. (Lanning, 2005) General Cornwallis, saw Yorktown in Virginia as a viable location to gather resources for future encounters with the Americans. The Battle of New York would soon prove to be a disaster. It was Washington's first command on a large scale battle. He and his general officers had not only failed, but they looked like fools from the British point of view. After the battle, troops began to run away in fear. Even Washington's closest friend, Joseph Reed, began plotting behind his back. Washington suffered another bitter defeat at Fort Washington, N.Y. The colonists were intimidated, and surrendered Fort Washington. It was a severe blow to the colonists, 2000 were taken prisoner, 59 killed, 146 cannons lost to the British and Hessians in a matter of hours. It was a humiliating blow. The Battle at Trenton, probably one of the most significant battles of the American Revolutionary War, was a resounding victory for the Continental Army. Although some argue that George Washington was an excellent leader, others argue that he didn’t know what he was doing and that it was out of luck that he won the revolutionary war, George Washington was without a doubt a fine general, because George Washington played roles in which he showed exemplified character and leadership, he stuck by his men and led the colonial forces to victory over the British and became a hero, he and his continental army spread ideals of freedom, liberty and showed there is hope for new heroes in the world.
