In this essay, I will be looking at and justifying the role of discipline within the public services, as well as evaluating the impact of discipline. Discipline takes a massive role in the public services for many reasons. It is crucial for the servicemen to stick to the rules, which I will be demonstrating within my case study which looks at what happens when a Buckingham Palace Guard is seen pirouetting. Every serviceman within the uniformed public services knows how discipline is of the upmost importance when serving your country. There are many reasons for this, although some people feel that some are more important others. Some of these reasons include: • Keeping yourself and others around you safe when in dangerous environments …show more content…
not getting into fights. In one case, there was a Grenadier Guardsman caught on camera dancing and pirouetting in front of Buckingham Palace. This included him marching in slow motion and freezing with his leg in the air. A lot of people saw this as a disgrace to the uniform, with one woman, who said her son was a Guardsman, saying ‘the soldier had "disgraced his uniform" and should be "severely reprimanded.’ An Army spokeswoman also said "We are aware of the video. Anyone who is found to fall short of the Army's high standards can expect to face appropriate action." But other comments were more forgiving: "It's a harmless bit of fun and entertainment for the crowd. He is still doing his job but showing his human side too." My opinion on this is that he has disgraced every single serviceman who works hard to abide by the rules to upkeep the entire uniform’s respect and appearance. I totally agree with the army spokeswoman when she says "If you are on patrol outside Buckingham Palace that is an important job and we do not expect people to be messing around." Onto my final point of keeping the public safe. In my opinion, this is the most vital reason for having discipline within the uniformed public services. The core role of all public servicemen is to keep their country safe, including each and every one of their people. This goes from taking care of criminals in a prison, to saving lives as a paramedic, to
The Army in an extremely nostalgic organization with a copious amount traditions and has about a million different methods of conducting its business. Some are old and some are new, but possibly the oldest one that has been around since before the Army was officially established and still lives today is the Armys rules, regulations and policies on customs and courtesies. In this form of a remedial block of instruction given to me by my team leader, due to certain circumstances I am to explain the Armys customs and courtesies and the importance they have always and still do hold within the Army.
Discipline is very important for anyone who is part of the Uniformed Public Services. Discipline is put in place to maintain order and to make sure that everyone works to the best of their abilities. All the services are organised in a similar way with a clear rank structure and clearly defined roles and responsibilities, which all rely on discipline to work effectively.
a. Military discipline is founded upon self-discipline, respect for properly constituted authority, and the embracing of the professional Army ethic with its supporting individual values. Military discipline will be developed by individual and group training to create a mental attitude resulting in proper conduct and prompt obedience to lawful military authority.
For example, if I had not been in my room when I was on quarters, and a fire had erupted in the barracks, I would now be putting my battle buddies or superiors trying to locate me at an extreme and unnecessary risk, especially if they were unable to contact me by phone or if I had not contacted the chain of command. With communication, punctuality and being at your prescribed place of duty all being essential facets of military life and having a direct correlation to the soldierly appearance and combat readiness of a unit, these kinds of faults and mistakes cannot be allowed to permeate our disciplined ranks and taint the effectiveness of our unit . Without punctuality, and therefore discipline there can be no effectiveness or efficiency in our mission of protecting our own and destroying our enemies. If we cannot efficiently destroy the enemy we are no longer an effective or worthwhile unit in the Army.
Military discipline is a special form of military relations. Its specifics lie in coordinating the conduct and actions of military personnel and in serving to establish such relations as are required for successful joint activity. The conduct of servicemen is regulated by special rules and standards of behavior set forth in laws, military regulations and orders of commanders (superiors) and reflecting the specific features of the military
The meaning of discipline in the army is thought from day one in basic training until the day we graduate and see our families. Discipline is vital to following orders efficiently, without it soldiers wouldn’t react fast enough when something is being commanded or would simply not be concerned enough to perform the task in hand, failing the team. We follow our commander’s orders because we certainly know that no matter what decision they make it will always be its overall good for the U.S, the army, and the individual soldiers. When an order is given we need to fully understand the order, and think about what needs to be done using the least amount of resources or time to achieve the mission in hand to complete the commanders or NCO’s specific commands. This is the most important key when performing a mission; the soldiers should never question the logic behind the command but should carry out
Stewardship of the Army Profession is the last of the Five Essential Characteristics of the Army Profession, but in terms of importance, it is just as, if not more important than the other four. The United States Army’s ADRP-1, or Army Doctrinal Reference Publication 1, even defines stewardship as “the responsibility of Army professionals to ensure the profession maintains its five essential characteristics now and into the future”. Such importance is placed on this characteristic because Stewardship of the Army Profession is the one that ensures the other four are maintained. I sought out the definition of stewardship because despite having spent almost three and a half years and West Point, I was not entirely sure what the doctrine behind Stewardship was. In doing this, I felt like I was better prepared for both this paper and ensuring that the corrections I made were stewarding the profession. With this newly acquired knowledge, I set out to make my corrections.
Imagine being in an authoritative position in a war. Sounds cool right? Now imagine if your subordinates didn’t follow the orders you put out to them. You just imagined chaos right? In my opinion there is no limit to the chaos that could happen if just one soldier didn’t follow the orders given to him/her. It doesn’t matter what the rank of the soldier is. Following orders in the armed
This can provide benefits in the form of encouragement – tacitly or explicitly – towards professionalism on the part of all police personnel, not just those associated with the PPU. Although the term “police professionalism” has fallen into some disfavor due to its association with a concept of the police as a cold and distant force imposed against crime, the reality is that militarization does serve to increase consistency of behavior across police forces as well as the imposition of expectations of professional behavior (Hall & Coyne, 2013). Additionally, PPUs may serve an important morale-boosting purpose for police forces, setting a high standard for competence and ability and creating a goal to which line officers may aspire (Breede, 2008). Finally, when it comes to civilian law enforcement, it is far more desirable to layer a degree of military training, tactics, and equipment onto a preexisting police mindset than to try to retrain a military mindset for civilian law enforcement work (Breede,
Discipline influenced how militaries prepared to fight and win wars, such as conducting drill and training before going to war. Drill instilled discipline and was essential to the way troops behaved during war. Drill had been part of military training to teach armies how to use their weapons, but in
Discipline teaches kids basic skills they will use for the rest of their lives, especially if they continue into the military. “Military Schools are very structured schools”. Military Schools can change the way students go about everyday activities because every bit of the day is planned out for the students. This can be a change from what some students experience before they come to a military school. Changing from no structure to structure is hard but it will change the student’s lives forever. In the book, The Other Wes Moore, Wes’ mother sends him to military school in hopes of keeping him out of drugs and crime and give him the opportunity to excel in school. He later comments “Do you think
Discipline is composed of integrity, tact and bearing. Like other students , I show integrity when I take test or a coach ask if I have completed all the exercises. I also exhibit integrity when I have to take points from another MCJROTC cadet's grade , even if they are a friend. Tact is the ability to communicate without causing offence and bearing is the ability to maintain composure. I exhibit these when helping fellow swimmers. This shows my discipline because I conduct myself professionally at all
military discipline and conduct. Each subsection addresses a different aspect, or issue, affecting Soldier's behavior. Section 4
Firstly the subject discipline generally means being able to be a specific character or behavior in a certain way; especially in a training environment that creates moral or mental improvement. However discipline in the Public Services means; the individuals duty within the service they are serving in. The main services can be the police and the army; these are the ones we are going to use. They would need to obey rules and regulations within their service, this is so whatever the task in hand is, and it is completed in effective, well-structured and efficient way possible. Our first example is a police officer, if they were dressed correctly and conducted themselves in the correct manner like communication, this likely to give and build a
As we look at today’s society compared to the past, we notice a huge change in our young children and adults. In the past, we could tell the difference between adults and children, unlike now we cannot tell the difference because everyone acts the same. So if we had mandatory military than we would all have more sense of discipline for ourselves. While in the military
