My findings from the learning style activity, was that I am a kinesthetic tactile learner. I am not surprised by this, because most people with ADHD are kinesthetic tactile learners. I learn with all of my senses and not my just my eyes and ears. When I am engaged in the material, I remember more. I become easily bored when having to listen to a class lecture. I struggle with understanding directions and concepts when no examples are presented. How I learn and study is by taking notes. I find it extremely helpful and useful when professors provide study guides to help guide me through the reading material. This also helps by keeping me busy when studying, so that I am not easily bored. YouTube videos, games, charts, and maps, help create visual
First, I must make sure I have the right environment for studying. Over the winter break, I will make a distraction free “study zone” in the basement. I can think out loud as I walk myself through whatever concept I’m learning. Also, to monitor my understanding of what I am studying, I can use a reading technique such as asking myself questions to confirm my comprehension. Finally, by understanding my learning style, I can use that to my advantage. I can take more in-person classes to get exposure to seeing and hearing course material, and continue to use YouTube as an additional source of
First, How do I learn the best? A test we took determined this and here are the numbers of things I related to in that category: Listening 5, Viewing 3, Doing 3, writing 2, reading 2, and speaking four. According to the test I learn the best by listening and speaking (no surprise). This means I will work better by studying with other people and listening to people tell me stuff instead of writing to tell me. For the speaking portion it means I am going to ask a lot of questions, and I will repeat things to remember or understand them.
The methods I have found most effective are: active learning, practice and overlearning, and distance learning. There were several research studies that demonstrated the positive impact active learning can have upon students. One outcome is increased content knowledge, critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, and positive attitudes towards learning in comparison to traditional lecture-based delivery. However, it also can increase enthusiasm for learning in both students and instructors. Then, there is the improving students’ perceptions and attitudes towards information literacy ("Ellis Hall Active Learning Classrooms Project."). Therefore, professors always encourage students to take notes or outline reading assignments, talk to others about the material, and write and rewrite key concepts rather than just read the material repeatedly (Levy p.228). Now, practice and overlearning, the book says, “practice makes perfect.” Although true perfection is rarely
The way I learn is depending on the style of learning.I am mostly a visual and a tactile learner. As a visual learner I like mostly to read or see how its done.If I need anything explained I like to see a picture or imagine it how its suppose to be.When I want to take notes I need to see the board as notes written on it or a presntation explaning either steps or diractions or notes this will give me a better understanding. As a visual learner I like my things very organized and marked by any color or labeled or else it will make me feel very confused and irritated. An example of a visual learner if i need to get directions to a place i need things to be explained and descriped to me this way I can make it to the place i need to go to. While in LPN class it was easy for me to study. I had no kids. My method of studying is just reading the materials over and over out loud. Then after I have read the material,I know it may sound crazy. I have to act like I’m teaching a class the same lesson and I also answer the question for my class. Repetition is the best way for me to learn. Repetition strengthens the connections between neurons and makes it easier for impulses to travel along the pathway.(Science, 2014). So therefore it makes a clear pathway in your brain to remember information that is learned. What haven’t worked at all for me is joining a study group. To many people leaves too much time for me to socialize on other topics rather than the topic at hand. To me there is
Studying is a task that seemed to be easy for me, but the quiz revealed I have major holes in my strategy. I scored a 31 out of 50 on the study habits quiz, this revealed that many things can be improved upon. The most beneficial study habit that I can obtain is learning how to study differently for every test. I can use models to study instead of reading a textbook, using models would grab my attention and engulf me into the content I am trying to learn. Receiving help from an instructor is something I rarely do. If I am struggling with a topic I need to contact my teacher instead of googling information about the subject. Using the internet to find information is dangerous because it does not always concur with the information my teacher
A positive learning attribute of students with ADHD is their active learning style. Kinaesthetic/tactile learning tasks and role play make use of this strength, resulting in increased attention levels and reduced disruptive and impulsive behaviours (Hughes and Cooper, 2007). While no two students with ADHD are alike, and no single programme or approach will be best for all (Wilkinson and Cook, 2006), some of the following strategies may be useful, however student will benefit when teachers and parents/carers are able to work in partnership using appropriate positive approaches and shared objectives. However, for this to be successful, a trusting relationship needs to be
The three strategies I need to take to be successful in my learning and studies this semester are taking notes during lessons, asking the teacher for any help if I am having trouble and using a planner. First and foremost taking notes during lessons in class will give me the references and the knowledge I need to succeed. Having those notes will help me with guide work, future tests and with my understanding of the unit. I can take a look back at them at anytime for example before taking a test. I find this strategy the most helpful, because it works and it helped me succeed in all of my tests and assignments first semester. The second strategy I need to be successful in my studies this semester is asking my teacher questions. Asking questions
To master class material, I have found it useful to learn what I can by myself, then talk with other students about their ideas. By reading notes and starting to work on assignments by myself, I can begin to learn what I do and do not understand about class material. When I work on comprehending the material on my own I follow a process. I begin by reading sections of the textbook uninterrupted. Once finished, I write down what I understood in my notes. Then I go back into the book and look for key words. If I feel they are of importance, I will write down the term and a brief definition. If I come across a direct quote I would like to include in my notes I write them in blue ink and note the page number I found the quote on. I let time pass and then I usually go back through my notes. By this time if I still do not understand something, I will go to one of my classmates and ask them for help. Once I discuss the material and assignments with other students, I know what I need help with. My classmates give me their
Mary Fowler, creator of many workshops to help teachers advise students with ADHD, offers different illustrations to help teachers keep the attention. Fowler incorporates colors, physical objects, and games in teaching students with ADHD. Also she suggests, “eliminate rushing by removing all external incentives for finishing quickly.” Have the students take time to finish the assignment. Often times, the student will need large projects given one step at a time. Accompanying step by step projects, track the students task time to keep raise awareness of time used to complete each step. Another strategy used to help students with ADHD is to physically do more in the classroom. Moving around, reorganizing desks, using hand motions, adding interest to explanations, and working with manipulatives all encourage the full attention of the student (49). The United States Department of Education reinforces teachers to review lessons from the day before. By reviewing, the student remembers much of what was forgotten, and the student can now build off of what was learned the previous day. Being predictable is another approach to teaching students with ADHD. Consistency is a key in all learning, as it is extremely beneficial. Finally, allow the student to attempt to correct their own mistake. This can help the student to be self-teaching which allows for
The VARK assessment categorized my learning preference as multimodal; however, my scores were highest in the aural and kinesthetic areas. I agree with this assessment. I was diagnosed with ADHD and ADD in the 1st grade. Though, I have improved my concentration, I still struggle to focus on tasks at hand. I have a hard time sitting still long enough to grasp the content and meaning of visual tools, such as graphs and diagrams. Often, when I see graphs or a three page paper over the origins of a species, all I see are words and numbers swimming on a page. I have a hard time organizing information that has been taught in a visual/written style; however, once I understand a concept, I find it helpful to write out the information.
I typically study by the assignments that I have done. Sometimes I do flash cards and get together with other students to share and compare notes and knowledge. Also we always put aside any class that we feel bored with, but as the author expressed we should try to get more information about the course and find the interesting parts of it in order to never get bored with a subject. Reading this essay taught me new learning strategies such as taking notes on the author’s way and tips that he gives us. In addition, after I read, I learn that I need to start considering that learning has two components that sometime we never focus on, that include understanding and remembering. Learning is the base of what you understand in order to remember. I will try to understand because sometimes we just try to mechanically learn the stuff and then forget, Through understanding, I might always remember the material and might be able to explain it to others people. Rewriting the notes and assignment will be a good strategy that can be used to help with any
To start off, I’m a kinesthetic and auditory learner. For example, I’m a kinesthetic, auditory learner because I’m very good at sports like tackle football, baseball, basketball and other sports. I’m good at tackle football because I have been playing football for eight seasons and basketball for two. Accordingly, I’m good at good at listening, reading, writing, because I use flashcards to help me study and if I can’t hear I ask if she can repeat what she said again. In addition, I’m very good at science every year that I am in science I have scored higher than the average score for all the grades I have been in. To sum,it all up these are my learning style techniques that is why I’m an auditory and kinesthetic learner.
This study has come from cognitive psychologist who have done extensive research on the most effective ways of absorbing new information. The seven techniques of studying are allocating your attention efficiently, interpreting and elaborating on what you are trying to learn, making your studying a variable, studying a given item several times in intervals, visualizing information, then generating and retrieving. Using this techniques will properly improve your studying abilities.
Refer to my experiences of learning I had a simple learning strategy that I called Prepare-Learn-Repeat. This simple structure was worked. Prepare the lesson before the class started usually give me the roughly idea about the contents of lesson. I usually outline the main points to assist me to understand the new knowledge more efficiently. Then following the teacher in the class to learn, I usually write down the notes then compare them with my outline in order to find out the contents I missed. Repeat includes that finish the homework, required readings, extra reading and practice from the resources (most from bookshop) other than the text book. Sometimes need to keep repeating until I remembered the contents, formula, vocabulary even the entire article. I preferred to use Table, picture and form help me to remember and learn, especially with subjects such as History, Mathematic, Physics, Biology and Chemistry. After high school, I began my undergraduate study in Melbourne, this learning strategy help me to overcome my language barriers. The difference was that besides the lecture, tutorial and group discussion, online search engines, school online database and library provided the most important support through my entire period of university study.
