As a language teacher and researcher, I am always on the lookout for useful books which draw not only on current theoretical issues, but also on pedagogical knowledge for the language classroom. Given the advent of technology and recent advances in linguistics, use of technology in language education are considered beneficial to the teaching and communication. I have found the book “Fundamentals of Formulaic Language: An Introduction” by David Wood an insightful and comprehensive account of formulaic language as one of the emerging issues in corpus linguistics, applied linguistics and language teaching.
The book consists of ten chapters. Beginning with a thorough examination and comprehensive overview of the research history of formulaic language, Chapter 1 concerns the emergence and concepts of formulaic language in various fields of study, including spoken and written language. Readers will find the phenomenon of and insights from formulaic language studies from a wide range of research and disciplinary traditions. A discussion of formulaic language and established terminology used to refer to it, from aspects of communication and language e.g. pragmatics, discourse, language acquisition and cognitive processing of language is presented here.
