Language is one of the most powerful tools known to man throughout history. Language is the bridge of communication from one person to the next. It allows for inner thoughts and emotions to be perceived by the outside world. Everything boils down to language. Every war or every love story comes from some degree of communication or lack thereof. For me, language has always been a love-love-hate relationship. I love to write. I love the process of organizing my thoughts onto some medium and producing a something that reveals the inner thoughts of my soul and mind. I also love to read. He initially read the dictionary but this developed into reading any book he pleased as he was now able to understand what he was reading. This is similar to my experience in language in that, a lot of what I know, I have learned from reading. I have learned a great deal of vocabulary from various books and have found that it is easier for me to use diverse words than someone who didn’t have the same zeal for reading at a young age. I also, like X, learned a great deal about different historical events and cultures through reading. I obtained a great interest in both of these topics and find that I have been able to build a lot of friendships and bonds with people when I can relate to someone by expressing an interest in and knowledge of their culture.
The power of expressing oneself is the next power of language. Jimmy Santiago Baca emotionally reiterates this in his essay, Coming into Language. In it he explains how his journey in language began as someone who was illiterate but through desperation in trying to find some sort of comfort during his prison sentence he began to teach himself to read. This experience transformed him from an illiterate young man caught up in the system to a renowned poet activist.
