Impact of Virtual Worlds, Massive Multiplayer Online Games, and Other Gaming Technologies Impact Future Soldier and Leader Training and Development
During its formative years, the computer gaming industry was exclusively associated with the younger generation. According to Blumberg et al. (2013), 58% of Americans play video games while 51% of all households in the United States own at least one dedicated game console (2013). This means that the popularity of the concept of gaming has not waned. However, technological advances have led to the emergence of a new phenomenon characterized by a rapid increase in the use of massive multiplayer online games (MMOGs), virtual worlds, and other gaming technologies many areas, including military training

Political and interpersonal skills often lay down the ground for how a leader is able to relate and communicate with both team members in the military world as well as stakeholders in the civilian world, for example, political leaders. A leader can only lead well if their team members listen to them and follow their orders as instructed (Creutzfeldt, Hedman, & Felländer-Tsai, 2016). Project management skills, on the other hand, are needed when it comes to planning an attack and organizing the teams into different entities and delegating duties to them (Maratou, Chatzidaki, & Xenos, 2016). A leader who is equipped with these skills through exposure to simulated environments is better equipped to undertake military planning in the real world than one without, and this explains why the virtual world will remain an excellent training …show more content…
Over the past few years it has become clear that getting human subjects or real-life situations with which to train individuals is sometimes difficult or impossible. However, the simulated environment created by gaming technologies offers an opportunity for soldiers to acquire valuable skills without necessarily exposing themselves to unwarranted risk.
Moreover, the world at large is increasingly embracing gaming as a training, learning and skill development tool. As time goes by, the gaming world will experience rapid changes in terms of sophistication and range of military applications, but so will the needs of military planners. Enhancements in the way MMOGs and virtual worlds are calibrated to evaluate and improve soldiers’ leadership, cognitive, technical and interpersonal skills will go a long way in helping them to adapt well to changing operational needs through effective decision-making, problem-solving, deployment and project
The third stage of this research will be conducted through electronic survey. By conducting all surveys through electronic means the study will be able to read a wider audience and a larger participation group in a more efficient way. By using the military global email system email surveys can be sent according to personnel who have served in the different theaters more expediently. The survey will be simple and consist of asking service members from various theaters to choose a set of combat tasks that are applicable to their combat experience. It will also ask soldiers who have no deployed on a
The video games have been marked with a considerable advancement since its first introduction in 1970s. Emergence of the modern technology and social networks has enabled games to expand and explore new means and forms of its application (http://www.statista.com/topics/868/video-games/ ).
World of video games is a vast digital land that provides hope and entertainment to countless generations who chose to press the power on their console or device each day. The community that has grown through the gaming community has reached out and provided a way for people to connect with others from thousands of miles away. That digital bridge is also a community connection reach the troops deployed overseas.
Gaming consoles, along with films and descriptive war stories have given the youth direct and virtual involvement in the war action.
They examined the effect of computer game on flight performance of cadets in Israeli Air Force flight school. The control group of cadets received 10 hours of training using computer game and were compared to those who did not receive computerized training. Consequently, when both groups attended a subsequent test flights, those who practiced computerized training performed better than cadets who did not practice computerized training, Furthermore, the study revealed that skills enhancement varies based on different training schedules and the robustness of training (Gopher et al.,
In the past five years I have been in several leadership roles including instructing a course on the virtual battlefield simulator two (VBS2), attending warrior leadership course (WLC), as well as managing a budget at Alliant Techsystems. Each of these has taught me valuable lessons about being a leader.
According to Raymond A. Noe in Employee Training & Development, the world of virtual simulations in the U.S. Army is not only cost efficient, but also a training tool that allows soldiers to “focus on important safety issues and emergency procedures that are impossible to replicate” (Noe, 2017) in real life events. This theory is repeated by many. David Vergun interviewed Maj. Mike Stinchfield, chief of the Training Innovation Facility, Army National Simulation Center, Army Combined Arms Center, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas for MilGaming
Two groups of volunteers were trained to play different versions of a real-time strategy game called StarCraft, a quick-paced game where players need to build and sort out armed forces to fight an enemy. 33% of the group played a life simulation video game called The Sims, which does not require much memory or numerous strategies.
There are military services around the world, and there are many techniques for training. What if the soldiers can go to war while they are training at their base? This is possible because of virtual reality engineers these people make it possible to do something that you aren't doing in real life. For example, if I used the virtual reality gadget (most likely goggles) to play a boxing game, would really be at that boxing game it will just seem like it. Virtual reality engineers can create goggles that help the soldiers get ready for battle by using a game designed for army training. By creating these goggles, it tests the stability of the soldiers and as technology advances one day there can be virtual reality contacts. That has a chip inside
In December 2001, the Chief of Staff of the Army tasked the Army War College to produce a report which identified Strategic Leader Competencies for the post 9/11 Army. Dr. Leonard Wong and four U.S. Army War College students prepared a report under the direction of the Director of the Strategic Studies Institute. That report produced a list of six meta-competencies.3 Although the title of that report and the materials presented here have a similar name, that report dealt with soldiers operating in a strategic environment, where tactical and operational level decisions can have strategic ramifications. This paper addresses more broad-based attributes, which in some instances are complementary to several characteristics described in the
Online games has become the popular outlet for young adults to play and socialise with other people online. However, it has also become a problem. One type of videogame that has become a problem to young adults is the Massively Multiplayer Online Role-playing Games (MMORPGs). “A MMORPG can be defined as a game in which numerous players around the globe inhabit a single virtual realm simultaneously, adopt alternative personas, and interact with one another in multiple ways, and thus these games provide a variety of incentives for play” ( Kuss et al. 2012). MMORPG are quite popular to the numbers of gamers that play over the world. It
As technology advances, new and creative forms of entertainment immerge from these advancements. One form that has grown immensely in popularity over the past dozen years has been video games. Taking form nearly four decades ago, video games have been one of the major embodiments of the growth of entertainment technology. Today, video games have taken many shapes, from the general PC and console games to special applications that can be found on social networks and even millions of cell phones around the world.
Video games have made a huge impact on pop culture and the military has made good use of them as well. Using their popularity, the United States Army has
As a concerned parent, one would easily feel coaxed to venture into analyzing every aspect of the child 's welfare from a day-to-day perspective. There is a common concern over what the kids play around with as well as the impacts created upon the receiver. Similarly, the use of video gaming presents a common challenge as to whether the games are of benefit or not in the educational system. Video gaming involves the use of computers and other technology devices to access a variety of games in the format of videos. The gaming hypothesizes to offer entertainment and educational information, especially, in cases where the game covers a specific topic in the contemporary society (Squire, K. 2013). However, the current situation in the industry presents a prospective possibility of the video gaming posing a threat to the educational development. Video gaming may support the cognitive development of children and nurture the social and interpersonal traits.
Development in technology brings many things that people don't have many years back. One of these things is online gaming that is provided by the internet.
