Leadership: a strong leader is one who prompts motivation in staff by providing opportunities for them to grow by using their developed skills, allows for creativity and provides recognition for achievements made, which are most often an incredible amount of work that goes unrecognized by management. Most people believe leadership is synonymous with manager but in fact it is not, leadership can come from a co-worker who takes the time to inspire us in what we do and recognizes the sacrifices made to continue providing services day in and day out and reminds us that the practice of self-care is key. Leadership is proactive and punitive

The hierarchal term management, is just that. It is the group who make decisions, mostly without the consent of the specific program workers. I have worked with executive directors who lacked leadership qualities and did not communicate with staff about job cuts, program changes as well as let units go unsupervised for months with no training for new staff, this is management, not leadership, hence productivity is poor and staff turnover is high due to burn out. More often than not management is punitive and requires each discipline to remain inside its box, I lack respect for management as in my opinion management does not belong in social work but leadership very much does. As a social worker we all apply the practices that resonate with us, it’s what makes us uniquely qualified at what we do, for this I require no management, but
