Getting To Know Yourself What is encouraged in being a good leader? After doing the exercise in the context that dealt with the study of leadership traits and characteristics that was done by Kirkpatrick and Locke, I found some of the importance of leadership traits. Knowing the importance is only one step in getting to know yourself. Its also being able to use the leadership traits in ways that make you more able to lead. Finding what it really takes to be a successful leader may be hard, but I can recall several events in my career as a manager that can make the normal leaders' head spin. The problem was that I was asked if I could get a particular coworker some ones out of the safe. A customer was waiting for these ones so that they could leave. Being the first day working at the store by myself in training, I had forgotten the combination to the safe, and they were not written down anywhere. We needed ones and customers were not very happy about me telling the employees to temporarily give quarters instead until I could call someone for the combination. First, looking at one of our class self-assessment exercises, the one with Kirkpatrick and Locke I found the truth in what things you, yourself have to have in terms of leadership traits. In training at Boston Market for new positions, you find that all levels of drive, motivation, integrity, confidence, cognitive ability, and task knowledge start off very low just for the simple fact that you don't have the training it takes for you to trust yourself enough. I know I felt very depressed, stressed, and my level of confidence was low when I began training, and not remembering the combination did not help! On my very first day alone in training that was how I felt. But now as a manager who is fully trained on all aspects of the standards and procedures I feel much better. Why? Because I felt like I was needed, and that everyone could depend on me for answering their questions.
As a Naval Officer I had the opportunity to experience both leadership and management. Today's Navy operates with fewer people and resources than before. Therefore, leadership and management are more important than ever. Very early in my career I was taught leadership and as I advanced through the ranks I experienced management.

In the changing business environment, leaders of all organisations may face unprecedented uncertainty, especially the technology advancement and changes among the employees. To survive and succeed, leaders should have some necessary attributes. Meanwhile, some changes for leadership skills have to be made to confront the challenges.
Every leader has their own idea of what effectiveness looks like (Jones, 2015). To inspire and influence others, a leader must possess many skills and abilities. As motivational speaker Peter Northouse, states, “a leader should be strong, but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be bold, but not bully; be thoughtful, but not lazy; be humble, but not timid; be proud, but not arrogant” (Northouse, 2013) Moving an entire group of individuals toward a singular goal is a considerable undertaking. Without effective communication skills and a clear vision of what needs to be accomplished, one will feel like they are trying to herd cats rather than leading.
I believe that I have strong leadership abilities. I am motivated, passionate, and a visionary. Throughout my life I feel I will make a difference in the world and inspire others to do the same so that my time spent alive is impactful and revolutionary; however, all of my hopes and dreams for leadership in my life now and in the future are put into question without structure to my leadership. I lack structure in my leadership and I feel like this opportunity would be a great chance to add structure and guidance to my leadership skills and character. The chance to be part of this leadership program would help me to become the leader I see that I will be and allow me to leave my impact on this community and the world.

The leadership activity I performed for my personal leadership lab was committing myself to personal training. For this Leadership final project, I personally trained two clients, totaling 4.5 hours. I performed these training sessions on the days of February 17, 20, and 24, 2016. I got into personal training around the time of this project’s beginning. My friend Thomas has been a personal trainer on the side for over a year. I have had a little over two years of workout experience, and he introduced me to the personal training class. It is a class that takes only a weekend to complete to become certified. I received one of my clients in inquiry from Thomas, and the other client I found through a craigslist ad. I used these first two clients for my Leadership Lab because I knew there was a lot to learn. Both of these clients are members of the gym I attend called 24hr Fitness. Out of convenience, I trained both clients in this gym.

In corporate America the term used to describe a person in a position of power is “Manager”. A leader can be a manager, but a manager is not necessarily a leader. Leaders motivate, challenge, and influence others to achieve goals. Great leaders have the necessary skills and attributes which allow them to connect with the team and organization. Being a leader is not the same as managing an organization. Leader’s posses the interpersonal skills needed to influence others to achieve a goal willingly. Leading is a major part of a manager’s job. Leaders do not need to be a manager to lead people, but managers must know how to lead as well as manage.
Change is when a person does not follow their everyday routine. They may want to try something different, or be forced to. Change can be for the good and the bad. Places can deal with change ranging from the weather, to the animals present, or the seasons changing. Also, objects can deal with change too. Objects like an iceberg can start to melt, or a forest fire can kill many trees in an area. As a human, we are the ones deciding on change. We are in a position to make big decisions and possibly even become a leader in order for change to happen. If one person starts to change, others will follow and hopefully, the change benefits all.
Leadership characteristics are not something mystical. The traits and qualities required for leadership are also not something you either have or you don’t have. These characteristics can be learned over the course of your career and developed further. All it takes is focus and determination to understand the building blocks of a solid leadership.
In one’s life everyone wants to become a leader in at least one activity. There is some strange feeling of satisfaction that comes along with being the boss. During On Course by Skip Downing and The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey they continue to stress using effective communication and learning so you can become a leader in your home, workplace, and community. They have many ideas on how to help you with concept, but there are four specific ideas that I believe effect this leadership concept the most. I do believe that the most effective way to help become a leader in On Course by Skip Downing and The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People is self esteem, interaction, learning, and what makes a true leader.
