Every student that goes to school has homework, and the teachers give homework so that the students remember what they learned in class that day. But the problem is how much homework should the students get per week? The average amount of homework that one teacher gives out is about 3.5 hours a week. For high school students who typically have five classes with different teachers, could mean as much as 17.5 hours of homework each week. That means that students have a limited amount of time to do their chores and other business to do. So teachers should limit the amount of homework that is given to students.
Approximately 70% of teachers assign homework online. Additionally 65% of student do their homework online at home, but what about the

Students need well balanced lives that include extracurricular activities, outside pursuits, physical activity, fun with family and friends and hanging around and doing nothing. The percentage of teens going outside has decreased because most teens these days are staying inside and playing video games, which is not good for their health and is one reason why they are more bigger teens than there used to be. Among young people ages two to nineteen about 31.8 teens are considered obese or overweight and 16.9 percentage are considered to be obese. 1 out of 3 boys (33%) are overweight of obese, compared to 30.4 percent of girls who are overweight or obese. Also when students don't have time to be with friends and family, that can affect their social skills. That is why more and more people are texting and on their phones because they don't have the social skills that they need. Researchers have found that ten different social skills like taking turns, listening and being nice are just as important as academics. The ten different social skills that students need to succeed are listening to others, following steps, following rules, ignore distractions, ask for help, take turns when you talk, get along with others, stay calm with others, responsible for your actions, and do nice things for others. If these skills were implemented, which they aren't, then there would be an increase in academics learning. This makes sense because the majority of students are not getting A's, all because of their social
Brian Sztabnik’s podcast Talks with Teachers, episode 51 “Is Homework Helpful?” is a quick episode for teachers on the go. Taken from an article written on Edutopia, Sztabnik discusses five questions teachers should ask themselves when assigning homework. Sztabnik begins the podcast describing how much time his young nephew spends forty to fifty minutes up to double that amount when distractions and breaks are factored in on assignments. He cites that the National PTA recommends teachers assign 10-20 minutes of homework for first graders and increases that amount by 10 minutes each year. Consequently, by following this recommendation, students will spend at least 137,160 minutes doing homework from 1st to 12th grade. That equals 2,280 hours or 95 straight days of homework. Students in Finland get around a half an hour of homework but still score very high on International tests.
Homework has changed drastically over the past several decades. One of the biggest changes is how much is assigned. Whether this is a good idea, or a terrible idea, has always been the subject of a lot of controversy.
Yes, I understand that sometimes I need more help on certain topics and sometimes students do need more help with something, but I think that teachers should still have more of a limit to how much homework they can assign, given the fat that they are only one of the seven other classes we have to take and that’s not including other out-of-school activities and clubs we are taking part in.
Homework is barely given in high school. Teachers try to get as much done in class and tell the students to just review their notes. I think that is terrible. Personally, I think homework should be given at least three times a week to help the brain continue outside of class and also help with time management. Once entering college to be successful you should at least study the number of hours out of class that you’re in class. This is a big difference once in college and you have never had to accommodate this skill while in high school. It’s almost as if you’re being set up to fail because so much is expected from you and you become overwhelmed with the college life that you should already be prepared
The debate regarding exactly how much homework is too much homework has been an ongoing debate for years. As of right now, there seems to be no end in sight for this debate. Various adults believe that if children do not obtain homework, then they are not learning properly. However, numerous children are obtaining a substantial amount of homework per night, as well as per each class. Once a child exceeds a certain amount of homework, then it is no longer beneficial for the child’s education. An excessive amount of homework can essentially become harmful to the child’s education. As a result, teachers are struggling with finding the right amount of homework to assign to students. The National Education Association as well as the National Parent-Teacher Association endorse the “10-minute rule” for teachers to follow when assigning homework to students. If a child is assigned an excessive amount of homework, then the child might experience more harm than good when attempting to complete the assigned homework.
When a class is almost over and a teacher starts assigning homework, every student's heart drops. When students have an excess of homework, they do not do as well. Even though homework is a good tool to help teachers teach students subjects, teachers should give less homework because too much homework causes mental health issues in students and less homework helps improve test scores.
On average, middle school students have at least 1-3 hours of homework per weeknight. High school students may even have more academic requirements. Expecting a student to then dedicate another hour or more to an after school program
I believe that school should be more flexible, and lenient. Most of the times people end up failing classes, because of the lack of attention span, and the restlessness of the body. Most adolescent kids like to play outside and are full of nervous energy. If we are allowed more time outside, or more time during the passing periods we are easily able to understand what we are given. Many schools utilize this knowledge in elementary school while giving a lot of recess times to the young kids. While core classes are heading towards the end of the day kids grades get worse, by not being able to focus on their work. Most of the time kids have to brood about extracurricular activities, and all the work is getting piled upon us.
Teens in schools will always talk about this one thing that they hate, homework. Teachers making you do work from the classroom at home. Many if not most of the population of kids in schools will say that homework is the suckiest thing in the world. Should there be a limit as to how much a teacher may assign? I believe that there should be a limit because it gets in the way of sleep, work, and it’s just pointless.
When high school students are released from school, they are all ready to go home and relax, that is after chores and...oh yes, the dreaded homework. Homework itself is not the problem, it’s how much they are given that is the real issue. According to the New York Times on the National Education Association and the National Parent-Teacher Association, each grade level are given the “10-minute rule”(The Homework Squabbles). -- that is 10 minutes per night per grade level. That would be 10 minutes for first graders, 20 for second graders, so on and so forth. But for high schoolers, they are given double that amount, sometimes even triple. Students are given piles of homework. Usually, from the time the students get home, they do homework until late at night, sometimes even until the morning hours. That’s way over the limit these students are supposed to be given, isn’t this a little much for a high school student?
Studies are showing that kids have 3 times the amount of homework they are supposed to have each night. Kelly Wallace stated in her article “Kids have three times too much homework, study finds; what's the cost?” states that even 1st Graders are getting 3 times the amount. Most
Teachers should limit the amount of homework they give to students because each student has different academic needs and valuable time. An elementary classroom can range in the number of students from fourteen or
Students should only spend enough time on homework so that the subject is reinforced and not just a waste of time. The national PTA suggest that from K-3 grades there should be no more than 20 minutes a day, for 4-6 grades there should be 20-40 minutes of homework, and from 7-12 grades time varies do to types of subjects and number of subjects taken(KidSource). Anymore than these recommended amount of times is seen excessive by the national PTA. Surprisingly U.S. students are working as hard as Asians: 24% of eighth graders do more then two hour of homework compared to Japans 28% and Germanys 17%(Brimelow108). Are we working to hard, researchers don't think so, U.S. student grades are improving. As of 1996 one in every sixth grader does more than an hour of
Definition of homework: Tasks assigned to students by school teachers that are intended to be carried out during non-school hours. Why do we have homework? What are the benefits of homework? Is there such thing as too much homework? Homework helps you to gain, and retain more knowledge than would be possible with only classroom work, this is a huge reason students get homework. Homework does actually have benefits, it teaches a host of important life skills, from responsibility and time management in prioritizing and organizing. But, how much is too much homework? That depends on multiple complex or elaborate factors, including the singular intelligence or capability of the child, type of classes, and available time. If you do have a lot
What is an agreeable amount of homework for a high school student? A student might say one hour, a teacher would say three. However, neither of these ideal amounts of homework are correct as far more is given every night. Teachers do believe that this helps the student to learn on a deeper level, but it instead stresses out students on a deeper level. Because health issues, excessive stress, and loss of interest in the learning experience result from overworked high school students, school need to limit the amount of homework given to their students.
