This literature review focuses on the various aspects that were previously explored on health maintenance practice present among nurses. It helps to picture the current situation regarding the subject matter. This literature review has been conducted by searching in various databases such as Pub Med, HINARI and Google Scholar using the keywords: Health Maintenance Practice, Health Promotion, Self care, Nurses. Studies from various part of world such as Canada, Australia, Norway, United States, South Africa, Hong Kong have been included. This review focuses on the studies conducted regarding health maintenance activities such as healthy diet, exercise, smoking and alcohol consumption, screening habits in relation to various variables such as age, work shift, working hour, etc. …show more content…

Several studies have explored job-related factors, such as work related stress, job satisfaction, and shift patterns and their influence on the health of nurses. 28-30
Most study has studied following discussed variables that give a clear picture for exploring the health maintenance practices among nurses.
Tertiary prevention nursing interventions include: planning follow-up with the people treated for diseases to assure they are following treatment and to offer rehabilitation like activities in order to maintain the best quality of daily life and decrease chances of disease progression; repeat demonstration of washing hands, verbalize proper use of sanitation facilities, and disposing of trash; offering adequate physical and occupational therapy instructions; evaluation of proper medication treatment, dressing changes and wound care; assessing living/sleeping quarters for safety and cleanliness in order to promote healthy/safe practices.
Nurses must support each other and “start a movement” (Tucker, S. 2016) to eliminate nursing “burnout”. The quality of nurse’s lives will improve and accordingly, their ability to provide exceptional care will be the “icing on the cake”. Now picture this; it is 2:50 pm and 1st shift is coming to an end, patients were checked one last time and all of their needs have been met. It was busy shift, but there was time for a walk and some breathing exercises. A nurse is giving report to the next shift and she actually has time to get in a quick workout before dance recitals soccer games, and PTA meetings; but more importantly, she made a difference
Nursing got defined according to the meta-paradigm for its ability to develop and sustain a connection and concern, which gets exhibited through the existence of a strong relationship between the patients and the nurses. According to Masters, (206), nursing gets views as the nature of care and the research into the illness, health and disease, and the relationship between the three aspects of a patient’s body. In my position as a Registered Nurse, we engaged in various missions aimed at checking the wellness of patients and the sustainable healthcare of the patients.
Although many of the older nurses reported neglecting their own needs the study outlined several great self-care strategies for older nurses. These self-care strategies included; regular exercise, eating healthy, and taking time for yourself. Eating healthy is especially important for nurses because many nurses do not take time during their shifts to eat or drink water. One nurse stated “meal breaks, that’s got to be the biggest laugh out”, while yet another nurse said “I don’t drink water…basically, I have coffee, coffee, coffee, coffee” (Gabrielle, et al., 2008, p. 321). After implementing self-care strategies outlined in the study many nurses reported having decreased aches and pains, lower blood pressure, decreased weight and overall better mental and physical health. Nurses who engaged in regular physical activities also reported better eating and drinking habits. Sara, a midwife of 44 years, had type-2 diabetes, obesity, and osteoarthritis from lack of self-care. Sara adopted a regular exercise program, changed her diet and cut back on her work hours. After making these changes she stated, “I’ve lost 36 kilos, I go to the gym, I walk, I swim. I do all the things I said I
AACN Standards for Establishing and Sustaining Healthy Work Environments comprise skilled communication, true collaboration, effective decision-making, appropriate staffing, meaningful recognition and authentic leadership (AACN, 2005). These standards are in line with the work life factors identified by Lake (2002) as characteristics of effective professional nursing practice environments (effective nursing leadership, staff participation in organizational affairs, adequate staffing for quality care, support for a nursing model of patient care, and effective nurse/physician relationships) that play an important role in the quality of nurses’ working lives and patient safety (Laschinger & Leiter, 2006). Establishing and sustaining healthy work
contribute to the costly effect include the fact that nurses have, increased incidence of nurse burnout and patients have poorer outcomes increasing both mortality and readmission rates. Nurses are a large component to keeping readmission rates down through spending time with a patient and educating and empowering patients on self-care through helping patients understand importance of medication regimen adherence, importance of diet adherence, ways to reduce infection and various other skills to care for self at home" (Problem Memorandum Assignment, 2015) The documents exigence is crucial the audience to better the outcome of patients and that of the health
Nursing revolves, not merely about looking after patients, but creating awareness in the society about self care nursing and prevention strategies and to communicate with their patients in a holistic manner, so as to satisfy their physical, mental and spiritual health needs. Various nursing theorists have repeatedly
Self care is essential to the nursing profession because it is a reflection on the quality of health care nurses provide to their patients, it portrays an image to the patients on what’s necessary towards healthy living and can help nurses battle with stress and personal health. Self care can be expressed as taking care of ones self’s health and overall wellbeing. This can be shown through eating healthy, exercising daily, getting enough sleep and completing weekly activities to reduce stress. Improving your overall health can benefit nurses from overworking themselves and help minimize the affects certain stressors can have on them. By doing so, the overall atmosphere in the workplace and the quality of healthcare provided to the patients will be greatly improved.
Creating social and physical environment that promote good health is another goal set by Healthy People 2020 that is designed to create and promote a healthy physical as well as social environment by the year 2020. Everyone deserves to have the equal opportunity to make healthy decisions that will promote good and healthy lifestyle. For this to be achieved, health care advances and improvements need to be made. Community integration and planning, social factors such as quality education, community based resources, social support system, hazard free environment all have significant impact on people’s health. With the challenges we face, nurses can promote a safe and healthy environment through nursing education and wellness programs, disease control programs, immunization programs and many more to alleviate and or eliminate burdens, reduce untimely deaths, and create safe environment that promotes a healthy lifestyle for all.
These topics may include way to avoid preventable diseases like proper nutrition and exercise to prevent heart disease and regular and consistent health checkup for early detection of life threatening diseases. Nurses not only responsible for hands on care but also serving as a resource person for the people. Many times people need constant reinforcement and encouragement in following a healthy lifestyle and being compliant with their diet or medications. This is where nurses play a crucial role as a role model and guidance counselor for the patient and community.
I will methodically analyze all parts of the study to assess the validity of the article, by contrasting and comparing the information provided, with previous literature. I will try to make sure that recommendations provided by the authors are congruous with nursing practice and beneficial to the advancement of it. I will as much as possible provide in depth detail of previous studies on the same topic that either support or contradict the analysis provided by this study and its authors.
Nurses play an important role in promoting health within the patient, family, and community (Kemppainen, Tassavainen, & Turunen, 2012). The focus of patient care has been transferred from treating the illness to disease prevention (Mchugh, Robinson, & Chesters, 2010). The implementation of consultation, education, and follow up exams can increase the overall quality of life for an individual (Kemppainen et al., 2012). I will discuss the various roles of a nurse in health promotion along with the multiple work environments in which they can be implemented within. I will also reveal the maintenance plan of my own personal health regimen.
houses, petty management, noise, variety of taking food, bed and bedding, light, cleanliness of rooms and walls, personal cleanliness, chattering hopes and advices, and observation of the sick. The nurse’s role is essential in manipulating these components accordingly such as to stimulate patient healing, and or maintain the health of an already healthy individual. Essentially it is the environment or nature that helps maintain health and any deviation from what is considered clean or pure contributes to

Health and wellness in the workplace is crucial to business success. Increasingly, it is recognized that the workplace itself has a powerful affect on people’s health. When people are satisfied with their job, they are more productive and tend to be healthier. When employees feel that the environment at work is negative, they feel stressed. Stress has a large impact on employee mental and physical health, and in turn, on productivity. Companies that promote healthy lifestyle habits for employees to improve their health, often take the success of the company to heart and are likely to be absent less often for health related reasons.
