LP1 Assignment: Leadership History shows us that there has been good leaders, and that there has been bad leaders. However, each type of leader has kept things together whether for the good of the people or just for themselves. What sets a leader a part is how well they lead their people. Leading by example is always the best way to go. If a leader shows integrity, honesty, and ethics it makes their followers want to display the same behavior. There are several different types of leadership theories to use when leading, but I have chosen three to focus on. The three I have chosen to focus on are: Contingency Theories, Situational Theories, and The Great Man Theories.
Contingency Theory: Contingency theory is a behavioral theory that claims

Task Oriented Leader: Leaders that focus more on the task at hand than anything else. These leaders believe that if they want the task to get done right, they need to do it themselves. They have to be in charge and will seek out ways to get the task done quickly. When they assign their employees a task to do to, they have to supervise every step of the way.
2. People Oriented Leader: Leaders that focus on how to incorporate the group into the task at hand. They find the best people to help with the task. They put their faith in their employees’ abilities in getting a task done. They believe that the best way to get a task done is by not hovering over their employees.
Fielder found that task oriented leaders were more effective in very positive or very negative situations, whereas people oriented leaders are better at transitional situations. In reality, A good leader is both task and people oriented. Sometimes you need to be able to rely on your employees and know that they are capable of doing their given task, and sometimes you need to get it done yourself. Three things that make a leader effective

This style the followers have the ability and skills, but lack the drive to complete the task.
4) Delegating: This type makes the followers have most of the decision making and requires them to take most of the responsibilities for what happens. This style the followers have both the skills, ability, and drive to complete the task.
Situational theory assumes there is many different ways to approach a situation, but there is one theory that is best to use in dealing with the problem. When using the situational theory, the leader needs to consider all of the possible outcomes before determining the right solution in handling the situation. However, this theory could limit the creativity of an individual who has been doing a task for a long time. This theory is useful when a leader is surrounded by business specialists such as lawyers and accountants and wants their opinions before making a decision.
The Great Man
A good leader shows others the proper way to act in everyday life. Good leaders help others with their challenges but they also acknowledge that they themselves have challenges in everyday life. A good leader is there to support and aid anyone at anytime. Even if that means getting up early to help before a long day or staying after a hard day and provide guidance those who need it a true leader will do it. Leaders put in the extra work to pick up the slack within the group if it is necessary. Leaders change groups into families. You can not be a leader over others if you first can not lead yourself in the proper way. The only thing different from leading yourself over leading others is that the actions you make while leading yourself only affect you, when you lead others, your actions affect you and others. The person has to be able to take responsibility over their own actions, respect themselves and show, do the work that is necessary and cooperate with
All situations are different and a leadership style applied in one situation will not always work in another. A leader must use judgement to decide the most appropriate style needed for each situation. The ‘Situational Approach’ to leadership identifies four leadership styles which are;
Effective leader must have an experience in his work so easily he can help his team members
On the other side,Servant v.s. Charismatic, the servant never tries to be above of it’s followers, followers know the servant has a way to prove themselves, and followers are able to trust their leader. As well, followers
According to Weiss (2015), behavioral leadership theory can be categorized into two types; task oriented and people oriented. Task oriented leaders focus on productivity and people oriented leaders focus on the person. In the leadership of the Sacramento Chinese Community Service Center, there are both task oriented and people oriented leaders. The Sacramento Chinese Community Service Center’s executive director is more of a people oriented leader because he develops relationship with employees that are considered supportive, friendly and trusting. On the other hand, the director of youth development is more of a task oriented leader and is often concerned more with getting the work done and less focus on the person. I feel that both types of leaders are needed in an organization for effective leaderships. Having both people and task oriented leaders is important for checks and balances. When dealing with employees, leaders must be able to focus sometimes on the task at hand and other times be able to focus on the person, having both types of leaders makes this possible. These leadership styles are also present in the program manager position. Program managers are responsible for ensuring day to day operations in the field, and often are the first person employees see and communicate with. From the example set forth by upper management, program managers are able to be both people and
Leaders defined here are affirmative, positive, optimistic, and goal-driven. They are not distracted from achieving the set goals and objectives of a company or an enterprise. They are not easily swayed by other people’s decision and opinion as they are certain that their options and opinions would achieve
2014). Focusing on people and the needs of people are the most important part of what makes an effective leader. Leaders accept the responsibility of achieving goals or getting results through the efforts of the followers (Leonard, 2017).
I agree with Jack Welch and the importance of people, as a leader. Consequently, I feel as a leader understanding, motivating and developing people is the primary product of a leader. I feel that as a leader, through effective people skills it allows you to thoroughly know each subordinate, as they were a member of your family. As a result, as an effective leader you understand the individual strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and his or her threats. Therefore, you understand how to motivate, develop with each of your subordinates. Furthermore, as a leader, you are responsible for developing and making the most of each person on your team. At work, I have seen team leaders that have had great ideas but just focus on those ideas rather than people, as a result, there is disconnect and nothing becomes reality. Conversely, at work I focus on the people- energizing and developing them so they can reach their highest potential. Consequently, as I develop each person’s deficiencies and
There are two type if follower’s behavior those are, satisfaction of followers, and followers’ perception of their own abilities. When it comes to followers’ satisfaction, followers will support their leader as long as the leader’s actions serve as a way of increasing their own levels of satisfaction. However, leaders are not the only source that can increase satisfaction, followers characteristics also depend on their satisfaction. Characteristics play a role in path-goal theory along with behaviors, since they are important in determining outcomes.
As for leadership, I show both task-oriented and people-oriented results. In terms of task completion, I do have a higher task-oriented characteristic. Although I have high need for affiliation, when a task is given to complete and someone has to push the group, I become more task-oriented and call for focus on achieving the goal. The assessment says that the best leaders can use both leadership styles in various situations, and I always try to balance the two.
‘Leadership’ is a term thrown around a lot in the modern world. It is said that leadership is the way to move forward and someone at all times need to appointed at this role. Sadly it is not clear to anyone what the term means and which leadership theory is the best. Theorists argue that ‘trait theory’ or ‘great man theory’ is the best for today’s world but I disagree with them. As I believe the ‘situational leadership’ is the best, not only for now but also the foreseeable future. In this essay I will analyse a leadership theory and evaluate its impact on my professional practice. I will do so by explaining what situational theory is, provide few strengths and weaknesses and evaluate how the theory informed my teaching practice. It is true that over the years theories have evolved and/or adapted themselves to fit the society. Let us all see if my chosen theory fits today’s technological world or not.
The style suggested as offering a greater opportunity for success in achieving organizational goals is Servant Leadership Style. Servant leadership focuses on the leaders’ behavior, sees the leader as sensitive to the needs of the members of the organization and involves empowering the members to achieve success in personal and organizational objectives (Northouse, 2016). This style offers not only a greater percentage of success, but also creates buy-in and trust from the members, develops opportunities for members to grow and possibly becomes leaders also. Servant leadership is just one of the many developing styles being identified as possible catalysts utilized by leaders for organizational success and development. One thing becomes clear; many different styles and the use of their elements interchanged as needed speaks to the diversity leaders, leadership and organizations (Bolman, Lee G & Deal, Terrence E, 2013).
The realization that there is no one correct type of leader led to theories that the best leadership style depends on the situation. These theories try to predict which style is best in which circumstance.
For example, in the article “Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne Leadership Style” (Gaille, 2013), the author publishes some of Marchionne’s management qualities and principals. Glancing at the list you might expect this man to be a task-oriented manager, but if you look closely at both of the number one items, you will see his priority starts with people. Personally, I believe Marchionne has found a unique and successful blend of task and people oriented leadership and management qualities. Coupled with his decisions to put the right people in the right place, people working for Marchionne believe in accomplishing their tasks with pride, quality, and efficiency to meet his
"Leaders can influence the behavior of their followers through the use of different styles, or approaches, to managing others" (Keskes, 2013).
