Makeup has been around for at least 6000 years and some may even say 100000 years, but it all has evolved to what it is today. Women use makeup to enhance their natural beauty, but how they express themselves to the public has changed constantly.

Makeup was first originated from Egypt. The ancient Egyptians used copper and lead ore to create the world’s first cosmetics, as early 40000 - 10000 BCE. They lined their eye with kohl, a substance made of soot,metal, and fat. It was thought that kohl helped to prevent the eyes from blindness. Red or orange lipstick was worn to symbolize status - both men and women in the upper class wore it. They also used scented oils and ointments to clean and soften their skin and mask body odor. And also oils and creams were used for protection against the hot Egyptian sun and dry winds.

Wearing a full face of makeup was still seen as a sin, but natural tones gave a healthy, pink-cheek look. Before 1914, many woman were creating their own versions of mascara at home, by adding hot beads of black wax to the tips of their eye lashes. By 1914, T.L. Williams created the first modern commercial mascara formulate. It contained of petroleum jelly and carbon soot. The mascara was called Mabel, and now is known as Maybelline. Around 1920s, the first pressed powders were introduced, which included a mirror and a puff for touchups. A pressed powder blush followed after. Revlon was founded Charles and Joseph Revson, nail polish distributors, and Charles Lackman, a nail polish supplier in 1932.
