6. There are various types of experiments and observations a Marine Biologist can do with SCUBA. They can experience the environment they are studying and see how the organisms interact in their natural habitat. They are also able to stay underwater for longer periods of time, which gives them more time to study how organisms interact and their surroundings. However, there are limitations for what scientists can do with SCUBA. The limitations that the beginning scientists encountered included the coldness of the ocean, and the depths they were able to reach with the equipment they possessed. The constraints marine biologists’ today face include studying the oceans would be the depth of the dive and the pressure of the depths. 7. The first
This lab was conducted with the purpose of confirming the trait of homeostasis among goldfish. During the experiment, it was recorded that the fish would increase gill movement when placed in colder water two out of the three trials. However, the results showed no significant difference in gill movement in various temperatures of water. This has very little effect on the broad field of science since our only three trials were performed and may have included human error in the trials.
If feeding efficiency and reproduction have a direct correlation, and a population started with equal proportions of individuals with each of three feeding types, metal spoon, metal knife, and plastic fork, the frequency of the population with metal spoons as their feeding structure will increase in the next generation. While the frequency of metal knifes and plastic forks will decrease. Furthermore, since the organisms with the metal spoon feeding structure have a higher fitness level, this population will evolve by natural selection to a point where the metal spoon phenotype will be in abundant. While the organisms with metal knifes and plastic forks phenotypes will decrease in frequency due to the lack of reproduction. Eventually, if this population persist overtime, most of the organisms, if not all, will have the metal spoon phenotype, while very few, if not any, will have the metal knife or the plastic fork phenotype.
I’ve always had a keen interest in science. When I was younger, I viewed a dolphin show online. I was instantly fanisnated and later I was informed that the trainers were special marine biologists. The idea of becoming a marine biologist is still a dominate career choice for me. Last year, I was incredibly curious with the aspects that a marine biologist has to undertake that I researched the career path as part of my PLP. This only ignited my interest even further and when I was invited to attend the Flinders University I particularly focused on the marine biology and biology lectures.
The mole is a convenient unit for analyzing chemical reactions. Avogadro’s number is equal to the mole. The mass of a mole of any compound or element is the mass in grams that corresponds to the molecular formula, also known as the atomic mass. In this experiment, you will observe the reaction of iron nails with a solution of copper (II) chloride and determine the number of moles involved in the reaction. You will determine the number of moles of copper produced in the reaction of iron and copper (II) chloride, determine the number of moles of iron used up in the reaction of iron and copper (II) chloride, determine the ratio of moles of iron to moles of copper, and determine the number of atoms and formula units involved in
At the conclusion of the experiment, the two hypotheses were reviewed. Because the water temperature did affect the normal respiration patterns of the goldfish, the null hypothesis was disregarded and the alternative hypothesis was accepted. From the results of this experiment, it was concluded that although other environmental factors could play
The dream of having majored in marine biology is one thing, but to get to have a marine biology degree is a fifth grader’s dream come true. The environment is heading in a rough direction. For example, ocean acidification is already a problem. The decrease in pH of our ocean acidity is causing coral reefs to die out—which houses thousands of organisms’ homes and food sources. Due to the contaminants, we release into the natural environment, we are slowly losing ecosystems every day. Therefore, I want to be the researcher to help save the oceanic life from these horrible conditions. Also, the career of marine biology can take a person anywhere, from the coasts of the Bahamas all the way to the depths of the Arctic Ocean. This provides the advantage
I examine how rising or falling tide can affect the water level of Corte Madera Salt Marsh in this report. The data is from Wednesday (June 19th) and Thursday (June 20th). My hypothesis is that tide and water level have positive relationship. From the result, I learn that the water level and tide have positive relationship. However, when tide changes its direction, the water level is likely to stay or little change.
Observation: no bugs were found except small, black, gnats were all close to the ground.
In this experiment, an oxygen-measuring probe was attached to an oxygen chamber in order to quantify oxygen consumption rate, which served as a substitute measure for metabolic rate. The oxygen-measuring probe provided real-time measurements of dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration present in the chamber water. The oxygen chamber was sealed to create a closed system so that over time, the oxygen levels would decrease as the goldfish respired and consumed the oxygen present in the water. The software LoggerLite was used to record real-time DO concentration measurements.
An association between enzyme production, gene copy number, and gene evolution was explored by conducting analysis of the salivary amylase enzyme, AMY1A gene copy number, and the ancestral starch consumption in Homo Sapiens (Tracey 2017, p.22). It was hypothesized that the relative amount of starch consumption was very high for my personal ancestral diet, thus my AMY1 diploid gene copy number in my genome and salivary amylase concentration would be significantly higher than the population mean. With a population of 28 subjects (n=28), individual saliva samples were collected and compared to a calibration curve to determine the approximate amylase concentration by analyzing absorbance values. Individual samples of buccal cheek cells were
Use a test tube holder to put the test tube into a container of boiling water for 5 minutes, or until the solution changes color.
The major storage polysaccharide in plants is starch. These molecules would be found in abundance in the stroma in the plant tubers where it is found as granules. Glucose is stored mainly in the form of starch granules, in plastids like chloroplasts and amyloplasts. Plant starch starts out as glucose, but glucose is very hard for plants to store, so it is converted to starch through polymerization. Amyoplasts turn the glucose into starch and move it to the stroma, and in tubers the stroma is a place to store the food (starch), and when plants need the energy in the starch, it converts the starch back into glucose.
A male Betta is to be placed on the opposite side of the bowl, so that they can see each other but no contact. The fish were observed for two minutes. After the two minutes passed, the barrier was lifted and observations were recorded for one minute before the male was removed from the bowl. This was then repeated with the female Betta. These two constitute one trial. There was a total of three trials, so both the male and female were in the primary bowl thrice
Marine biology is the study of organisms in the oceans and other saltwater environments. Including their behavior and interactions with the environment. All plant and animal life forms are included from the microscopic pico plankton al the way to the majestic blue whale. Marine biology is a very broad area so most researchers select a particular area of interest and specialize on it. The specializations can be based off on a particular species, group, behavior, technique, or an ecosystem.
Biodiversity presents occurrence of variety of species and their natural community in which they live. By the definition it is “The degree of variation of life forms within a given species, ecosystem, biome, or an entire planet. It is a measure of the health of ecosystems and is in part a function of climate.” (Rutherford) Ecosystem is on the other hand, “ community and its abiotic environment”( Rutherford). Biodiversity exists in every ecosystem, weather it is big one, or just ecosystem of one garden, it has the same importance because without it nature loses its ability to perform major functions needed for life on Earth, as it is oxygen production. Trough this investigation, two different ecosystems will be explored and
