Ever since a young age, I have been extremely interested in ocean life. Due to annual summer beach trips, I was exposed to aquatic life often as a child and became very comfortable in and around water. My interest in the ocean is the main reason that I can see myself as a marine biologist in the future. Another trait of mine that contributed to this career choice is that I enjoy working with others, but also work well independently. For this reason, I want career where I can collaborate ideas among my coworkers, but also work on independent projects or investigations. In addition to the aquatic life, marine biologists may also study their environments or ecosystems (“Marine Biology”). Other names for marine biologists include wildlife biologist, fisheries biologist, zoologist, aquatic biologist, wildlife manager, environmental specialist, and conservation resources management biologist (“Zoologists”). Marine biology is important because they provide insight about nature and the ecosystems they study. Even though oceans cover seventy-one percent of the world, only an estimated five percent have been explored (“What is Marine Biology”). Since I do not know anybody in the field of marine biology, I first learned about this career at a young age when we first began to look at job fields in school . At times, marine biologists work in offices when researching or work in laboratories when performing experiments. In addition, they must spend time outdoors, possibly on boats in the oceans, in order to collect samples and make observations on animals in their natural habitat (“Occupational Outlook”). Marine biologists must actively utilize various skills in their work environment. These skills include active listening, scientific analysis and strategies, science, writing, reading comprehension, and critical thinking (“Zoologists”). One of the most important skills that marine biologists use is collaboration.
