The Melancholia oil painting by Giorgio de Chirico dated 1916 measuring 20 x 20 ½ inches and the Standing Nude Woman sculpture by Alberto Giacometti dated 1953 measuring 8 ½ x 3 ½ x 4 ¾ inches located in the Menil Collection were both encouraged by European art during the Surrealist movement. This was a time to explore the unconscious mind and to draw from dreams and imagination which resembled a feeling of sadness and alienation suggesting feelings of silence in everyday life.
There are many different ways an artist uses visual elements/principles in describing their art. The oil painting shows exaggerated colors on the landscape to show the effect and appearance of its brightness. Both vertical and horizontal lines describe the movement away

A brush for thin strokes was required to paint the warm yellow color in the arches and tower to contrast with the background of the greenish-blue sky painted darker to resemble dusk and the gold and black tints are in the foreground. The rhythm of the archways leads your eyes from one point in the other direction creating unity of the shapes, colors and patterns showing coordination and proportion to one another. The symmetrical painting has variety of elements that bring the design together with the focal point of the small-scale statue showing the value in contrast to the brighter background for the viewer to fill closer to the artwork. It balances the picture and is representative therefore you are able to identify the scenery with an amount of abstraction in the statue. The three-dimensional empty space sculpture has a vertical line of two end points intended for the body and horizontal for the large base, like the Cubism style, but missing beauty and bright colors. The color is naturalistic white clay with thin strokes of a brush to paint the shiny gold trim but the rectangular shapes are used for defining the body parts, like the narrow small head. The chisel for carving around a wire armature, which had to be used to detail
Texture and pattern are very easy to identify in this painting. The street’s cobblestones show texture and pattern in the way that they are arranged. Texture is also demonstrated through the paint strokes on the buildings, the tree, and even the sky. These thick, uneven strokes add a layer of depth and texture to all elements of the painting.
"Men pray to the gods for health and they ignore that it is in their power to have it."
Poverty also influences our responses to health and illness. The level of income below that which people cannot afford a minimum, nutritionally adequate diet, suitable and secure housing, heating and hot water, and beds to sleep on.
The element of art being most emphasized is color. There is a contrast in the artwork in the negative, The wall has cool and high key tones which contrast with the Egyptians and food that has warm and neutral colors. Although the artwork is not symmetrical, the light green color shown in the small details such as the carvings on the wall, necklaces, and food contribute a balance of colors within the artwork. In the artwork, there is a variation of curved lines and shapes that also bring the piece together. For examples, the lines are curvacious on the elbows, shoulders, and necklaces of the Egyptians and the objects around them. There are rhythm and pattern shown through the lines and shapes because most of the art piece has a bulbous form like the rounding of the shoulders or the circular shape of the heads. The art piece also seems to be scratchy because of the chips in the stone and the edges of the stone have faded limestone. The two men sitting and facing each other have a contrast of color to the rest of the art piece making them emerge into a more noticeable figure than the rest.
Millions of Americans suffer from clinical depression each year. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) (2017), 322 million people are affected by depression around the world. Concerning industrialized Western world countries, it remains as the number one psychological disorder affecting its population (WHO, 2017). Most clinicians begin primarily with prescribing either pharmacologic or psychotherapy interventions. With billions of dollars spent in revue on treating depression (Chisholm, Sweeny, and Sheehan, 2016), exercise used as treatment in reaction to mental illness is often overlooked by mainstream health care professionals. However, it has been proved by recent research exercise acts as both a preventive and reactive
I have worked incredibly hard to obtain skills from various organisations to better understand mental health. I decided I needed to acquire additional work experience to give my application some weight. I am tenacious by nature and therefore despite being somewhat academically inferior to my rivals, I make up for in passion, determination and professionalism. I can assure you my grade does not define my ability to work with vulnerable people, families and colleagues and I would really like the opportunity to demonstrate this at interview. I am keen to explore the depths of applying psychology to health and the behaviour-change processes involved with working with young people in particular.
In this painting, two visual elements stand out over all the rest. These elements are that of color and texture. Color in art is an element that has to be phenomenal in order to get recognition and true appreciation from the viewers. In this painting, the colors are rich, vivacious and standout as dark, but bold representations of the uniqueness of it all. The use of brown and yellow and green and grey and white all come together in a harmony of color and unity. As for the texture in the painting, it is that of brisk and roughness that is nature. The sharp edges of the bucks rack and the cold, rough edges of the dead tree show
The artist chooses a single block of white marble to carve this figure. The focal point falls on the crossing of the knee with the right arm resting on the left leg. Also, the figure's body is positioned more diagonal than vertically. From the top of the figure's head to the bottom of the platform. The artist used horizontal lines as well as vertical lines. The starting and stopping points are parallel to each other. The lines that define detail to the figures, jewelry, head piece, belt, tassel and arm of the chair all repeat the use
Major Depressive Disorder or MDD is a very common clinical condition that affects millions of people every year. According to the Agency for Health Care Policy & Research, “ depression is under diagnosed & untreated by most medical doctors, despite the fact that it can almost always be treated successfully.
be created in several ways; by connecting lines to itself, thereby enclosing an area.’ The main shape that caught my eye in this painting was the rectangular shaped rocks use as siding on the outer layer of the tower. The technique that was used in this painting was tenebrism.
To further elaborate upon the elements of art on the painting, the lines are in their vast
Many people feel apprehensive and miserable every now and then, but when does it take over their whole lives? Losing a loved one, doing poorly in school or work, being bullied and other hardships might lead a person to feel sad, lonely, scared, nervous and/or anxious. Some people experience this on an everyday basis, sometimes even or no reason at all. Those people might have an anxiety disorder, depression, or both. It is highly likely for someone with an anxiety disorder to also be suffering from depression, or the other way around. 50% of those diagnosed with depression are also diagnosed with an anxiety disorder.
Is depression a subject that people typically tend to brush aside? Rather than facing away from a serious issue that people suffer from in their daily lives, we should discuss the methods to help people with their struggle from depression. A common method to treat depression is the use of antidepressants. But are they effective? Do they cause more harm and danger than aid? Are there other methods that can provide greater improvement rather than a pill? Instead of using antidepressants there are other alternatives such as placebos and types of therapy that can be just as, or more effective than the use of prescription antidepressants.
The term depression is widely misused in today’s society. All human beings experience periods in life where they are sad for a relatively short period of time, which is considered normal. Those who experience sadness for extended periods may be suffering from depression. Two terms used to reference the classifications of depression, are Major Depressive Disorder, and Dysthymia. Individual diagnosis of these classifications is dependent on the length of time, and severity of symptoms experienced by the individual. The causes for these depressive states can be due to genetics or the insufficient production of neurotransmitters, which provide the brain with the data necessary to regulate one's psychological well being.
