I worked with the metaphor of lyrics being people. They comfort and console. They pull on your heart and tug at your soul. They print an impression on your memory and treat you like an angel and an enemy. They give you a real purpose and let you drift away and get lost in the moment. I chose this as my metaphor because there are so many lyrics I can relate too from different times in my life. There are songs I listened to at a certain time that I can go back to and feel the same as I did before. Some songs I never go back to, and others I go back to constantly. Sometimes when I want to listen to a song I do not even want to have lyrics in it. All I want to be able to do is listen to the mood of the song and not have to connect with it. It gives
Metaphors not only use alternative words to give an effect to a piece of work, they also help an author/poet to use words in a metaphorical way to help the reader understand/relate to the experiences they are trying to describe. Carrie underwood uses metaphors to help the readers relate to the deep emotions and experiences she is writing about in her songs. “To rip the nails out of the past” (line 10) is a great example of a metaphor in this song. She uses the word “nails” to represent her horrific memories of her drunken/physically abusive father that she experienced when she was younger. Another great example of a metaphor in this song is “To wash the sins out of the house” (line 8).
Lyrics evoke imagery within a song. From the way the word is enunciated to the volume at which the word is expressed, the listener is being encouraged to visualize the lyricist’s emotion. Lyrics with depth can be especially evocative, conjuring positive or negative imagery that synthesizes the songwriter's sentiment in a listener’s mind. Shallow lyrics do the opposite: they fail to fortify the author’s sentiment, often because there is no coherent, well-thought-out expression of emotion. Therefore, shallow lyrics are the worst song lyrics.
Music is a universal way in which people connect, and it does this through its use of literary devices to make the songs meaningful while still appealing. The song, “Wait and See,” uses literary devices like similes and metaphors to contribute to the theme of society’s mistakes and their impacts on the
In the realm of music, words and melodies work together in order to form a complete idea of an artist’s work. However, by abandoning the melodies and reading closely into the lyrics of a song, readers are able to draw meaning and make observations from the text that could be overshadowed by its melodies. A fine example of a song where this method is applicable is Paul Simon’s “Graceland.” Examining the lyrics reveals the story of a man making a pilgrimage to Elvis Presley’s Graceland estate in Memphis, Tennessee in the same way a religious person would journey to a holy site. Through usage of imagery, tone, and metaphorical devices throughout allow this song to function as a comically surreal poem.
while everyone else has to continue to struggle. The metaphor, along with the most obvious, the tittle, enhance the effect of storytelling. Not only is the public able to connect their stories, they're essentially able to see what is being narrated through imagery, symbolism and metaphors. Along with these poetic devices, the rhythm enhances the beat in order for the song to get stuck in the minds of its audience and makes it easy for everyone to remember and sing along to cry of struggle.
The lyrics of songs inspire people to think and do many things. Today, songs expressing the quality of being beautiful and important in society can be found. Songs encouraging love and taking chances within oneself and others are listened to. None the less, there exists songs expressing hatred, anger, sorrow, and feelings of desolation. Lyrics are limitless, they simply express that of the person's internal emotions. Songs can convey a misunderstanding or an unclear interpretation. Much like the lyrics of today, slave songs conveyed a deep and heart-wrenching message, that to many listeners, were never quite understood. Songs are simply an expression of truth. In an environment which otherwise punished truth,
Figurative language is used to add personality to a certain song or story. The figurative language in a certain song usually correlated to the theme. It draws out the theme and really portrays a certain mood. In the song “Believer,” by Imagine Dragons, the figurative language directly correlates to the theme of pain being able to drive you to work harder than before. Imagine Dragons use darker figurative language including, “You're the face of the future, the blood in my veins,” to indicate that their, “drive, it came from, Pain!” (line 49) (lines 44-45). Each use of figurative language is used in its own way, but it is all is based around anger and pain. “I let the bullets fly, oh let them rain,” gives personification to the bullets (line 60). If this song were about happy feelings, they would not choose to personify bullets, but rather flowers or heart. Almost every line in this song consists of some sort of figurative language. “Falling like ashes to the ground,” is an an example of a simile (line 32). “Hoping my feelings, they would drown, but they never did, ever lived, ebbing and flowing, inhibited, limited,” is an example of personification because they are giving human actions and descriptions to feels (lines 33-35). Not only does the figurative language illustrate the theme, but imagery does

Songs, used to create messages, give singers the ability to speak about concerns that are relevant in the current everyday life. A powerful ways songwriters achieve this is by applying the use of imagery. Lyricists use this help readers of literary works to understand specific ideas that the writer is trying to convey. By using symbolism in songs, singers can discuss issues in ways that connect with the listener on a deeper level. Using this method in songwriting is crucial when discussing important subjects; influencing the public in a way that is not direct and more effective. In “ Don’t You Cry For Me,” songwriter Cobi uses repeated images of trees and individuals hanging as metaphors for his feelings towards facing injustice. It is through
The words so “bring it right hear” and “bring it over hear” giving the meaning of the character expressing emotion and expressions. The Poetic device affects this song because the devices shows the similarities of things that are non-alike objects. The definition of a Metaphor is a- figure of speech that identifies something as being the same as some unrelated thing for rhetorical effect, thus highlighting the similarities between the two animals. Also the poetic device impacted the song by its similarities, the differences, and the rhetorical effect.
It is said that everyone marches to the beat of a drum; it starts as a mere noise in the background but before you know it you are lost in the passionate lyrics of your favorite love song or the empty resonating chords of a depressing ode. I have been listening to music for as long as I can remember but it was not until two years ago when I developed a certain fascination for a particular genre that made me realize that what makes a song amazing is its lyrics and melody. Those two components of any “song” have the ability to convey feelings to a listener and persuade them into feeling the same way as an artist. It made me realize how influential the language used in lyrics is on the target audience. On a broader spectrum I thought of the extents
Song lyrics are the creative use of language in a rhythmic sense. The use of this creative language was created by humans for humans for a specific person to allow us to see things differently then we usually would. We find that in the lyrics of the song, that there is figurative language like that in poetry. There is room in the lyrics of the song for symbolism, imagery and ambiguity. The song expresses the thoughts and feelings of the writer of the song and allows them to represent life how they see. They use things in their life that people can relate to on some level. They can be seen as reflections of the society and culture in which they were written in. The songs are reflections of the writer. In “Lego House” and “The A Team”, Ed Sheeran represents life in how it has its ups and down. It shows that life is messy and complicated but we can get through it. He wanted to convey that life is messy and complicated but beautiful.
The ability to portray a narrative through a song helps visualize the meaning of a unique story. Depending on the message the song delineates, can either put a saccharine smile on one’s face or generate a cascade of tears. The impactfulness of a story, especially through a song, provides meaningful lyrics which may relate to a dramatic event in a person’s life. Since the days of Native Americans singing songs and telling oracles, the lyrics a song possesses forms special stories that helps a person with their individual struggles in life. Listening to the lyrics of your favorite song you automatically start to have a connection with that song. Then the song starts to represent you and your life because of the lyrics. Some songs show about being a fighter, having freedom, or just being you. There's a billion of songs out there and there's a billion of people who connect with those songs. Usually the most common reason why some songs represent people is by their past experience. For me some songs represent me because I decided to follow my dreams, living in the moment, and get right back up.
