Senator Kamala Harris from Alabama is a democratic senator for the state of California. Prior to that, she held the role of 32nd Attorney General of California and District Attorney of San Francisco. Before her political career she served as managing attorney of the Career Criminal Unit in San Francisco and later as chief of the community and neighborhood division. Kamala Harris is also the first woman and Jamaican American to become attorney general, as well as third woman of color and 1st biracial woman elected into the senate. 1 This Howard University graduate is used to filling significant roles. She is currently serving on the Committee on Intelligence (Select), Committee on the Budget, Committee on Environment and Public Works, Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs.2

Michelle Obama is known to be a very successful woman. Before she became the First Lady of the United States, she was a lawyer and it took her hard work and dedication to get there. Michelle was enrolled at Whitney M. Young Magnet High School. Their program is an accelerated program for gifted students. Michelle became a member of the National Honor Society before graduating as class salutatorian in 1981. For college, Michelle attended Princeton University, graduating cum laude in 1985 with a B.A. in Sociology. Then she continued her college education at Harvard Law School, where she was part of rallies for the enrollment and hire more minority students and professors. She was awarded her J.D. in 1988. Michelle served as an associate at the Chicago office of the law firm Sidley Austin. At the firm, she worked on marketing and intellectual property. In 1991, she held public sector positions in the Chicago city government as an Assistant to the Mayor and as Assistant Commissioner of Planning and Development. In 1993, she became Executive Director for the Chicago office of Public Allies, a non-profit organization encouraging young people to work on social issues in nonprofit groups and government agencies. She worked there nearly four years and set fundraising records for the organization that still stood 12 years after she left.

Obama is intelligent and at one time, earned a higher wage than her husband. Michelle Obama’s mother taught her to read by age four and stressed the importance of education to Michelle and her older brother. She was a gifted student and was not ashamed to take advanced classes. She says “I never cut class. I loved getting A’s, I liked being smart. I liked being on time. She is overall an inspiring woman to so many people that have had to struggle in life. She has done everything in her power to help those people lead a life of justice and equality that they otherwise, had been prevented from doing. Michelle Obama has achieved things most others with her upbringing could only dream of. She used her achievements to give those people a better chance. Michelle Obama has become an extremely important figure in America because of her inspiring advocacy for women, girls, and people of color, and she was doing this far before she became the first lady of the United States.

The First Lady Michelle Obama has delivered a speech on October 13, 2016. Mrs. Obama speech was about the opportunities young people have and the challenges young females face. Michelle Obama is also giving the speech to persuade people not to vote for Trump because of how disrespectful and disregarding he is to women. Michelle obama used different rhetorical appeals during her speech. Michelle used lots of emotions and persuasive language to connect with the audience in front of her.

Obama would down play her political and professional credentials to emphasize her importance of being a mother and wife. Michelle holds family as a principal value that is close to her heart, it only right that she advocate for it. “Mrs. Obama has identified her primary role in the White House as ‘Mom-in-Chief’” (Kahl, 2009, p.2). Often times Michelle explicitly shows this to the world by her way of servant leadership, and believing in social actions, exercising your social responsibilities (Natalle & Simon, 2015). Wren describes a servant leader as one who is a servant first, someone who has a natural desire to serve first (1995). When Michelle’s husband was elected into office, she became first lady of one of the most powerful countries in the world giving her a greater opportunity to serve the people. As Kahl states Michelle “has adopted a generalized advocacy for the welfare of families, serving as a symbol of the complexities of contemporary motherhood (Kahl, 2009, p.1). By starting with her own family and branching out to the families in this country she was able to exercise her value of giving back to the people, helping them not only to survive but to thrive (Bond, 2012). Her love of service became a powerful motivator in her leadership, with the potential of having those that she served becomes servant leaders themselves (Wren, 1995, p.

President Barack Obama is know for remarkable events such as becoming the first African American president of the United States; however, not everyone knows about what else Obama has done. He is also an author who has written around twenty books including a memoir about his early life leading up to his life in law school, and a children’s book dedicated to his daughters. His most famous book Dreams From My Father, a memoir about his early life leading up to law school, is a prime example of what influenced him to write. There were many things that happened in Obama’s life that caused him to write. Things such as the segregation happening in the U.S at the time, his broken home and his feelings towards his absent father.

The amount of knowledge and powerful words that can actually get to one’s head is amazing. Michelle Obama was the First Lady for 8 years and stood by former President Barack Obamas side. She is a great example of what today’s kids should look up to. A woman with dedication to her word. A woman with dedication to what she believes. It is pretty easy to say that she has become an impressive public speaker who can deliver a powerful speech to her supporters. In her speech at the DNC in 2016, Michelle Obama did not fill her supporter’s heads with politics and facts, but a great use of personal experience, feelings and connections. Her love for this country and her love for her family is one thing that brought her audience together. In fact, if it wasn’t the great use of ethos, pathos and logos Michelle Obamas speech would have probably have been like any other.

Leadership is a skill that one is not born with, but is acquired through life experiences and interactions. Michelle Obama perseverance to attain a higher education, a concept foreign in her family, shows the dedication and determination a leader must have. As a leader, it is imperative that once you establish a mission or purpose, that you, as well as your team members, worked to accomplish that goal. Because of her perseverance, Michelle can be best identified as a pace setter, innovative and charismatic leader because through the various projects she undertook as her role of First Lady, she influences people through personality, inspires passion and the need to be active in one’s own community. For example, this can be seen in her role as Executive Director for the Chicago office of Public Allies where she mobilized youths and community to get active and set fundraising records for the organization that still stood 12 years after she left. Michelle influences people through her own success. Having attended Harvard Law, becoming a top attorney and later the first African American First Lady, she has influenced youths across the nation to believe that anything is possible, so long as they have faith.
