Everyone has a way to express oneself which always capture and convey of creation. For a writer like Mildred D. Taylor, who is known for exploring the struggle faced by African-American families, has a pen in her hand becomes a much stronger storyteller. In the novel Roll of Thunder, Hear My cry, Taylor pulls all her own imagination on Cassie Logan, a nine years old black girl, and made that vivid description of Logan’s family in the days back to the peak of the great depression. Even though it is a made up story, the recalling of history, the characterization and personal identity are more than real. It becomes a learning concept through out being faithful, respectful to

She uses Cassie to tell her own story, and the essence of grace in storytelling, is to let the story be told through readers, to flow through readers. “I remember the pain. From the time I was three weeks old, my life was affected by the pain.” (Taylor 8) Her father has experience some of the inequality (“almost hit a white man because of a racial insult.”) just like the Logan family Taylor experiences all kind of bad thing any black person would have to face. “Finally, he took the pipe from his mouth and made a statement that seemed to the boys and me to be totally disconnected with the conversation. “In this family, we don’t shop at the Wallace store.” (Taylor 41) After papa knows these bad thing happened in Wallace store especially after known Cassie being bully, he makes this decision of boycott. In contrast, Taylor is the one who actually experiences Cassie. Papa’s reaction is just like what has happened to Taylor’ father. Both of them are strong minded person with the sense of justice. They try to the most of what they could to protect family and community. “When there was humor, my family passed it on. When there was tragedy, they passed it on. When the words hurt, they passed them on.” (Taylor, 8) Taylor is not afraid to tell her own story as if what Cassie id doing in the novel. In the novel, most characters she creates are representatives of majority of whites from that time period, like the Simms family. They are harsh, mean, high and mighty with their skin color. But at the same time she creates a bright image as Mr. Jamison, the white lawyer who in the novel always helps Logan family out, has great sympathetic to the black people. It being a comparison with things happen in Wallace store. There is always something bright even under the darkest days. “Baby, we have no choice of what color we’re born or who our parents are or whether we’re rich or poor. What we do have is some choice over what
TJ in Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry by Mildred Taylor TJ is a 'tall emaciated -looking', poor boy of thirteen/ fourteen years of age. His family are sharecroppers who work for Harlan Granger. He along with his younger brother Claude walk to school with the Logan children. From the very beginning of the novel we as the readers see that TJ doesn't get presented in a very positive light. Cassie, the narrator doesn't like him much and finds him quite irritating.
This shows that Cassie is innocent because she is unaware of what the white people could do to them if they see that black people are stealing their customers. Earlier in this book it talks about John Henry. John Henry was a black man who was pretty successful. As soon as the white people found out he was back in town they killed him. Back in the 1930’s whenever a white person sees that a black person is doing better then them they get jealous. So if any of the white wagon owners saw that a black person was getting more customers they would take matters into their own hands. This also shows that Cassie is innocent because if they did move up with the white wagon owners they would be constantly harassed. Just like how Cassie is harassed by the kids on
The students at some point have to show courage, if someone is being bullied, mistreated, or just sad. Courage is showing bravery and just doing what's right. In Mildred Taylorś book, Roll of Thunder Hear my Cry. Stacey has to show courage, when he took the blame for T.J. cheating.. Stacey also had to show courage by, coming up with the idea of digging the trench, and Stacey got everyone involved with the idea of digging the trench, for the bus to fall in.
Mildred D. Taylor’s “Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry” is set during the Great Depression, in the rural areas of Mississippi. The majority of the people in this community are sharecroppers, who are greatly dependent on plantation farming. The Logan family is fortunate because they have a piece of land of their own, so unlike other black sharecroppers they do not have to be dependent on the whites. However, due to the sharp decrease in the price of the cotton crop the family have to work hard to keep it in their hands, whilst also providing food in order for them
In the novel, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, the author Mildred Taylor uses a fourth grader to narrate the story and it shows how Cassie grows throughout it. Being only nine years old, Cassie is a very intelligent person that will speak her mind about what she thinks is right or wrong. Not really knowing that her outspoken ways could get her in a lot of trouble in the white community in Mississippi. Being very proud of whom she was and her race made it difficult for her to understand the real dangers that were happening. Until she began experiencing injustice for herself and she became aware of all of the tragedies that were occurring to other people that were her race.
Even though Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry is about a family very different from my own, I identify with the main character, Cassie, because we are similar in some ways and I admire her. Just like Cassie’s mom, my mom was a teacher, and I have close relationships with my siblings. These similarities help me put myself in Cassie’s place. I admire her because she is brave and fights for her rights and what she believes in. She always sticks up for herself. For example, when the white kids’ school bus purposely splashes Cassie and her siblings, they dig a ditch and the bus gets stuck in the mud. Cassie always sticks up for Little Man, her younger brother. She tells her mom about the poor quality books that upset Little Man, and she comforts him when she is upset. Cassie and her brothers are always hanging out together. In my family, my sister takes me shopping and hangs out with me. I also play outside and jump on the trampoline with my younger brother. Even though I am similar to Cassie in some ways, we have differences, too. I am not part of a minority and have never faced prejudices like
It’s 1933, and there is a time of hardship and trouble for black people in the south. Even though black people were freed from slavery, the white people still maintain control over black people, due to the lack of jobs, education. The majority of the poor blacks living in the south are able to survive by sharecropping. This works to the advantage of white people, as they are able to maintain the illusion that they are superior. In the book, “Roll Of Thunder Hear My Cry “, the author focuses on the conflicts that arise in this struggling town. The author introduces us to the Logan’s, the only black family to own land independently , and T.J.,the son of a sharecropping family. As we follow the relationship between the Logan’s and T.J. throughout the book, we see that T.J has chosen the wrong path and begins to spiral out of control And the choices he makes affects the logans constantly . One result of his actions, ends up getting Mama , one of the Logan’s, fired which leaves less money to help pay for the land, His downward spiral continues as he begins to hang out with the Simms, who happen to be white and the town troublemakers and whose family has and had trouble with the logans . The results of his actions, cause T.J. to lose his friendship with the Logan’s entirely. The book reaches a dramatic turn when T.J. is conned into stealing a gun from the store by the Simms. The consequence ends up costing him his freedom and the Logans’ land.

The Use of Cassie as the Narrator in Taylor's Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry
The evidence from the text shows that Cassie was very mad at who heart Papa. When Papa was making a recovery from what happened at Vicksburg they were talking about what happened. Then Cassie overheated and said¨I blurted angirly, already plotting revenge against who ever had dare to hurt Papa.213

Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D Taylor shows the ways that black people dealt with injustice and racism in the South. In this novel, it is very clear how people feel about racism. You can also see the ways in which they react and deal with it. It displays how degradation, humiliation and hatred fill the gap between the white and black races.
Cassie befriended Lillian, learned all of her secrets, and beat her up to make her apologize. Cassie was getting tired, so she threw Lillian’s books on the ground. Cassie took Lillian to the woods after being nice to her, doing things for her, and fought her, pulling her hair until she said she wouldn’t tell her father about it. In order for Cassie to win, Cassie said, “Make me.” This may have seemed like a not so good idea, but if this plan had backfired, Cassie knew that in the end, the results could’ve been deadly for her and her
