Many people have misconceptions about what feminism is. I believe that if they were to fully understand what feminism really is, with all its complexities, then everyone should be a feminist. Unfortunately, people often relate the word, feminism, with many negative connotations. For example, people will say “Feminists are radical women who believe men are inferior to them, and that their agenda is more important.” The first thing you need to know is that, feminism in its simplest definition is the want for social, economic, and political equality of the sexes.

Feminism really began in the early twentieth century when women began protesting for the right to vote. Once we gained the vote, feminists realized that there was still so much inequality. They began tackling a wider range of issues such as education, jobs, women’s health, and sexual harassment. Some of these …show more content…

It is true that back then it as mostly privileged white women who were the face of the movement. However, today, feminism has become much more inclusive. Rights for women of all races, sexual orientation, and class are the issues of feminism today, rather than the “white feminism” is was in the 60’s and 80’s. Feminism is a movement, and movements change and evolve over time. Now, the feminism of the 60’s and 80’s is still important because it helped us get where we are today, but it is also important to know that modern feminism has taken the ideas of the 60’s and 80’s and expanded them into much more inclusive issues. Today feminism looks at matters such as equal education for women across the world who don’t have access to it, the oppression that women of different races face, gay rights, and so much more.
